http://home.att.net/~PracticalAttachment/
Have you adopted a complicated child? Or are you thinking about it, and wondering how to prepare? Or wondering if you can handle it?
Are you looking for strategies for promoting attachment in children with special parenting needs, such as children from institutions or backgrounds of neglect?
Are you struggling with professionals to find a diagnosis that fits and is actually helpful to you when you seek services?
Welcome to my world.
This web site may help you understand some useful concepts and strategies for young children who have problems associated with living in an orphanage during their infancy. You need to be aware of problems that are often confused with attachment issues so that you won't be caught off guard if they should develop in your child. Not all children from orphanages fit this profile, so your experience may be different. You won't find any horror stories here, just preparation. I want you to adopt these kids! I want you to feel that you have the information you need to help these kids have a meaningful life. I want you to feel ready, willing and able to love, protect and parent these kids in ways that are appropriate to their developmental needs. Every last one of them! A loving family for every child...
By request, I am posting articles, correspondence, essays, checklists and observations that I have written over the past 6 years. Much of this has appeared on adoption-related e-mail lists, and some has been included in newsletters and booklets. These topics are revisited as new people begin struggling with these issues. I hope this web site will help make these ideas easier to find. If you are looking for statistical data or scientific research, you will need to look elsewhere. This is a practical site. Everything here is based on observation and input by adoptive parents. This is not the final word, or the only approach.

They may also be overwhelmed with all of the new rules in the house and learning more for play such as board games or hoop games can be too much. To replace this, try cooking with the child. Even a young child can make milk puddings. Or, try working outside in the garden together. Planting and digging do not have to be done correctly, they have to provide a way to be together. For some, window shopping may work, or walking the family dog, or any activity in which the talk does not have to be focused on the child and the adult. Find ways to play together: If the child can play with the parent, be sure that there is amply time for this. Children from extremely deprived backgrounds may no know how to play so this may be a learning experience as well as a time for bonding. It is likely that they child will need to have toys and recreational activities that are designed for a much younger child.

    Subtle Signs of Attachment Issues
When you are just not sure if your child's attachment is real...
    November 1, 2002 / Arthur Becker-Weidman, Ph.D.
What are the subtle signs? 1. Sensitivity to rejection and to disruptions in the normally attuned connection between mother and child. 3. Difficulty discussing angry feelings or hurt feelings. 4. Over valuing looks, appearances, and clothes. 5. Sleep disturbances. Not wanting to sleep alone. 6. Precocious independence. A level of independence that is more frequently seen in slightly older children. 7. Reticence and anxiety about changes. 8. Picking a scabs and sores. There are effective ways for a parent to help his or her child. Parents and the right parenting are vital to preventing subtle signs from becoming anything more than sensitivities. Parenting consistently with clear and firm limits is essential. Discipline should be enforced with an attitude of sensitive and responsive empathy, acceptance, curiosity, love, and playfulness. This provides the most healing and protective way to correct a child. These sensitivities are not a mental illness or Reactive Attachment Disorder. They are subtle signs of attachment sensitivities. So, what can you do?

Children of the Heart: Attachment and Bonding
    Imagine yourself as a child..
    April 1, 2004 / Rebecca M. Thomas
Imagine. You are a young childone, five, eight years oldor maybe older. One day, someone comes to you in your foster home or your orphanage and says: "Very soon you're going to be leaving the world you know here with us forever. You are going to live with people you don't know. They will be your new family. No one you know will go with you. You may not recognize many things in your new home or neighborhood, but you'll get used to them. Soon, you'll be happy there in your new life." For most children who are adopted, this transition from a known way of lifehowever good or bad it may beto an unknown world represents a major life change as well as a significant life "loss." Yet, even though such transition may be difficult at first, most adoption stories have very happy endings! Children of all ages placed for adoption do make a remarkable adjustment in being with their new family in a fairly short period of time. And their new families embrace them with great love, care and sensitivity to their needs. During this transitional time, which can last from just a few days or weeks to a few months or even years, each person in the family begins to bond and form a loving attachment with the new child. Attachment is a core issue in adoption. Because without successful attachment, life is often difficult, stressful, empty or lonely for the child.

Adopting a Child With Special Needs
Inside
In the United States, more than 110,000 children with special needs are waiting for permanent homes. Traditionally, children with special needs have been considered harder to place for adoption than other children, but experience has shown that many children with special needs can be placed successfully with families who want them. The Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 (P.L. 105-89) has focused more attention on finding homes for children with special needs and making sure they receive the post-adoption services they need. Congress enacted the law to ensure that children in foster care, who cannot be reunited with their birth parents, are freed for adoption and placed with permanent families as quickly as possible.
