    STUDENT ATHLETE PLEDGE
    Mission Statement for Athletics
As a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference and a Division I member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Wayland is unconditionally committed to the basic principles and objectives established by these organizations. Dedicated to the pursuit of high-level athletic goals for true student-athletes, the University prides itself on its dual goal of striving for excellence in both the academic program and the athletic arena, and refuses to use the rigors of either as an excuse for less than high quality performance in the other. The institution offers an intercollegiate athletic program that is compatible with its overall philosophy and purpose; a program that strives for national recognition while recognizing the dignity, freedom, worth and potential of each student-athlete. The program seeks to attract students from diverse backgrounds and strives to recruit and retain highly qualified coaches who are dedicated to all phases of the University's mission. Student-athletes and coaches who participate in intercollegiate sport at Wayland have accepted theresponsibility that they will: become an effective, contributing member of society; perform as positive role models on the university campus and in the greater community at large; develop high ideals of fairness and sportsmanship in all relationships; develop an understanding of the value of athletics in a balanced educational process; practice self-discipline and emotional maturity in learning to make decisions under pressure; strive to excel and succeed in all phases of campus life.
