63. Wea Summer Recreation Program
Program working to build community facilities for softball and general youth athletics.
http://users.nlci.com/weabaseball/
The dugout is the only part remaining of the fields where these boys played many baseball games. When I look back on my childhood, I have memories of playing baseball on warm summer nights. Now that I am older, I am creating memories with my children, by watching and coaching them in youth baseball. Playing sports as a child was exciting, and I learned many things that still shape my life today. Being a part of the memories that my children create is even more exciting and rewarding. Unfortunately for the children in the Wea baseball and softball programs, creating baseball memories has become much harder this year. Recent development of soccer fields behind Mayflower Mill Elementary School has jeopardized the coming season, and perhaps several seasons to follow. Four of the six fields used by our program were lost in the development, and we are faced with the possibility of not having the facilities to maintain quality programs. As a not for profit organization, it is not possible for the WEA Summer Recreation Program to fund the cost of replacing 4 or more baseball fields. We recognize the need to ask our community, as well as neighboring communities, for support in meeting this difficult task. The Wea Summer Recreation Program must build facilities capable of meeting our current and future needs. Our participation level is approaching 450 boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 14. Considering the growth in the city of Lafayette (Indiana), and in Tippecanoe County, we're certain the participation in our programs will increase throughout the coming years.

Meet the Coach
2004 Season Preview The Cumberland College Track Team has a different look this year. The Patriots look to be strong in the distance, middle distance, sprints and field events. Young faces will look to get to the national indoor meet in March. Coach Floyd Stroud is very excited about his team this year. "We are strong in every event that we are in. I am very anxious to see how many people will qualify for the national meets." The women's middle distance squad looks very strong with freshmen Kelly and Shelly Schnee, Shelley Seifert along with sophomore Michelle Warnky will look to qualify in the 3200 meter relay and individual events. LeNita White looks to qualify again the discus after her school record throws in 2003. Freshman Megan Banks threw 140 feet in the discus in high school and looks to be a part of the strong field event team the Patriots have. Freshmen Kristin McKenna and Melissa Story look to qualify for pole vault which would be a first for Cumberland. In the distance events, Barb Davies looks to spring past her school record in the 5000 meter race this year and qualify for the indoor and outdoor championships. All-Americans Tethlon Detry and Joe Salvato look to make up for the injured 2003 seasons and qualify individually for the championships. Assistant Coach B.J. Temple looks forward to the 2004 season. "Our middle distance squad will be strong for indoor and outdoor. I am excited to see what our freshmen and sophomores can contribute to Cumberland's strong history of middle distance." Senior Jon Brenenstuhl will focus on the 5000 meters indoor and the marathon outdoor. He qualified for the marathon along with senior Tommie Kendall last year at the outdoor national meet. Joe McDaniel will red shirt indoor, but will look to qualify for the 1500 meter race outdoor. Adam Honnold will focus on the 5000 meters indoor and will look to qualify. Lemuel Holifield will contribute in the 400 meter dash and the 1600 meter relays indoors and outdoors. Ronnie Collins, Jared Tackett, Derrick Byrd, and Brent Culbreath will all look to qualify for the national meets.

As one of the smallest NCAA Division I colleges in the nation, Davidson supports student-athletes in 21 varsity sports and numerous recreational sports with strong coaching and outstanding facilities. Davidson College was founded in 1837 by Presbyterians who instilled it with ideals that continue today, although the College now serves a community more diverse than the founders might have imagined. One such ideal is the Honor System, which promotes trust and respect among students, faculty and alumni. Learn how Davidson got the nickname " Wildcats The College's campus reflects its history. Two modest dormitories that housed the first students still stand, along with other early buildings that are now historic landmarks. A Presbyterian church has always sat at the border of the college and the town, serving both. Today, Davidson's 450-acre main campus features 75 academic and residential buildings, primarily in a neoclassical style. Chambers Building (1929) is the main academic building and an impressive landmark. The E.H. Little Library (1974) includes more than 380,000 volumes, 2,000 periodicals and 100 daily newspapers. Charles A. Dana Laboratory (1941, renovated 1979) include a laser lab, and NMR spectrometer and a scanning electron microscope. The new Visual Arts Center (1993) adds extensive studio and exhibition space.
