George Carlin on religion
When it comes to bullshit, big-time, major league bullshit, you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims, religion. No contest. No contest. Religion. Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bullshit story. Holy Shit! But I want you to know something, this is sincere, I want you to know, when it comes to believing in God, I really tried. I really, really tried. I tried to believe that there is a God, who created each of us in His own image and likeness, loves us very much, and keeps a close eye on things. I really tried to believe that, but I gotta tell you, the longer you live, the more you look around, the more you realize, something is fucked up.

The question that arises about nature is: is it a creation, eternal to nature, or an accident within nature. The Deist will maintain that it is a creation, but Deists will differ as to degree of involvement on the part of the Creator in the process. The atheist will counter that it is either eternal, or accidental. The final resolution of this problem will eventually be up to science to settle. To begin, let us look at nature as an ever changing and shifting painting. Science attempts to understand what the paint and canvass is composed of, the relationship of the individual paints, and the brushstrokes that are involved in the final product. But, what about the painter? If one admits that nature is similar to a painting, than it is not too far a leap to conclude that a painter exists, or at least existed at one time. The atheist continually resorts to the logical fallacy known as argumentum ad verecundiam (appeal to modesty) when dealing with Deists or even theists. The appeal here is to science as an authority which cannot be challenged. Unfortunately, this appeal is plagued by its own problems.

    Was Hegel Christian or Atheist?
    Paul E. Trejo
After Hegel's death there was a great clash of intellectuals which the Hegelian theologian David Strauss called the clash between "the Left Hegelians and the Right Hegelians." The Left Hegelians were atheists, led by the ex-minister Bruno Bauer and his famous follower, Karl Marx, and by the radical editor Arnold Ruge and the radical egoist whose real name was not Max Stirner. The Right Hegelians were Christian fundamentalists. They found Christian inspiration in Hegel's philosophy, and they condemned David Strauss' progressive New Testament critique, The Life of Jesus . Strauss also took his inspiration from Hegel. He showed how the earliest Christian communities altered the Gospels with their local traditions. Albert Schweitzer praised his book as epoch-making, and by today's standards the book is tame. But it was the 19th century death-knell for Hegelian scholarship. Strauss defended himself by accusing Hegel himself of ambiguity on the subject. Bruno Bauer was living evidence of this. Bauer was first the leader of the Right Hegelians, and led the damnation of David Strauss' theology of demythologization. After more years of reflection, however, Bauer turned coat and became the leader of the Left Hegelians. (In either role, Albert Schweitzer praised Bauer's scholarship as world class.) Scholars for generations have reviewed the arguments of the Left and Right Hegelians, and are still divided on the question: Was Hegel a Christian or an atheist?

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. The scientific community, above any other subgroup of the population, has become overwhelmingly atheistic. According to a 1998 report in Nature , a recent survey finds that, " among the top natural scientists, disbelief is greater than ever; almost total ". Interestingly, the biologists in the National Academy of Science possess the lowest rate of belief of all the science disciplines, with only 5.5% believing in God. This decline in belief in biologists strongly indicates the nature of the cause, and the ability of the teaching of evolutionary biology to turn people away from a belief in God. Nature, Vol. 394, No. 6691, p. 313 (1998) Macmillan Publishers Ltd. The views of the general population over the last couple of decades remain largely unchanged with regard to creation vs. evolution, however according to the American Religious Identification Survey taken in 2001 , the number of adults in the U.S. identifying with "no religion" has doubled since 1990; from 14.3 million (8%) in 1990 to the current 29.4 million (14.1%). Philosophy of Religion Nonbelief as Support for Atheism Theodore M. Drange
West Virginia University
tdrange@wvu.edu
ABSTRACT: Atheism of a certain sort can be supported by appeal to the existence of widespread nonbelief in God. This is shown by a Canadian philosopher, J. L. Schellenberg, in his book Divine Hiddenness and Human Reason. His argument is as follows: (1) If there is a God, he is perfectly loving.
(2) If a perfectly loving God exists, reasonable nonbelief does not occur.
(3) [But] reasonable nonbelief occurs.
In this paper I shall first raise some objections to the argument and then try to show how it might be improved. Objections (A) Irrelevance of the term "reasonable" (B) Premise (1) Premise (1) should be rejected because there are theists who do not view God as perfectly loving. Even some Christians think of him as an angry deity bent on punishing people for their sins. Consider for example the biblical god who ordered the total annihilation of the Amalekites (including all their children and animals), or one who would predestine some of his creatures to eternal torment in hell (as commonly believed). Such a deity is not perfectly loving. The property of being perfectly loving is too specific, which is why lexicographers usually omit it in their definitions of "God." To get around this, Schellenberg should put his argument forward only in relation to theists who already think of God as perfectly loving and so would accept his first premise.

Strengthening Your Atheism - The Psychological Explanation for Religion Introduction The Embryonic and Parental Shell Theory Father and Mother Figures in Religions The Fittest Religion Survives ... Links Welcome to our web site!
Who is this website meant for?
First and mainly - for all of you whose minds tell you religion doesn't make sense and who would like to consider themselves atheists, but whose hearts have these moments of doubt. Those of you who are skeptic of religious beliefs, but in times of stress find themselves calling for God's help. Those of you who can outwardly present clear-cut and well-presented atheist ideas, but have this yanking "but yet...." in the back of their heads.
This site is intended to show you that these doubts and inner feelings are not a sign of divine presence lingering about, but rather the opposite: they are proof of the human origin of religion. Once you've learned and taken in the essence of the "Embryonic and Parental Shell Theory" that is presented on the next pages, you will better understand why it is so difficult to shake off religious inclinations against all better knowledge. Understanding the psychological origin of religion will help you to strengthen your atheism and aid others who attempt to shed the irrational religious misconceptions. Let's move on to the Introduction!

Kerry's Speech Today
The Kerry campaign's foreign policy pronouncements continue to astound me with their utter vacuousness. Today's speech is a prime example: Kerry pronounced four imperatives, each one either obvious, impossible, or a meaningless bromide. The first was that America should build more foreign alliances. Yet he refused to assert which countries America should reach out to in order to form these Kerry alliances. Must we only launch military operations that involve France or Germany? How much should we compromise our interests in order to construct these alliances? What is more important: the mission, or maintaining friendships that are devoid of meaning? But even beyond these pressing questions, this first "alliance" plank of Kerry's speech stupidly ignores American history. Throughout our history, Americans have consistently shown that we value American primacy, sovereignty, and choice over maintaining foreign friendships. This was true when Alexander Hamilton wrote in Publius 11 that our Constitution would give us sufficient power so that we wouldn't have to deal with Europe because, "The natural strength and resources of [the United States] . . . would baffle all the combinations of European jealousy to restrain our growth"; this was true when George Washington advised his country in his Farewell Address to avoid entangling foreign alliances; this was true when the Monroe Doctrine was pronounced; this was true when

I am an Atheist, a Skeptic, and a Rationalist
I'd like to state at the outset that I consider myself a "moderate atheist," which is to say, I am not "anti-religious." I do not hold all religious believers in contempt, I do not believe that having faith means you are necessarily ignorant or stupid, and I do not campaign against religion. Nor do I rant about the "evils" of religion, bringing up the same tired old examples of the Crusades, the Inquisition, etc. I do have major problems with certain religious beliefs, and the behavior of certain religious believers, and I have no problem expressing my views in a provocative manner (see my essays). I also strongly believe in the separation of church and state. And ultimately, I believe that religion is an irrational (in the literal, not pejorative, sense of the word) belief system on the same level as any other superstition. Religion is not

(August 03, 2003) I'm an atheist. I have been for nearly twenty years, and before that I wasn't really anything - I didn't really have a position on God vs. No God. I suppose I just hadn't thought about it properly. I can't really understand how anyone can be anything other than an atheist, but - despite my incredulity - people do still seem to conjure for themselves other non-atheistic options from the spiritual ether. Perhaps it's because I don't understand how people can even vaguely justify theism (or even agnosticism) that I find myself continually in debates about the issue. I find myself explaining my stance on religion at least once a month. At one stage - while I was at University - I went through a bit of a phase of reading other people's books on why they didn't believe in 'god' either. These books were routinely extremely boring, because fundamentally the intellectual labour involved in making a highly convincing 'anti-god' case is so trivial that it feels out of place in the mouths or books of scholars. Bertrand Russell's
