'God Bless Atheism'

By E. J. Dionne Jr.
Tuesday, April 6, 2004; Page A21 On Monday, our family asked why this night was different from all other nights as we celebrated Passover at the home of Jewish friends. There was nothing unusual in this. In Seders of their own, millions of Jews around the world did exactly the same thing. But we are not Jewish. We are Catholics who are celebrating Holy Week. Our story might typically be used to tell a self-congratulatory American tale about the triumph of religious liberty and pluralism. But some serious believers, and also some principled atheists and agnostics, might view our evening differently. I could imagine an orthodox believer Christian, Jewish or Muslim wondering how committed we really were to our own faith. I could imagine the atheist pointing to our shared celebration as evidence that religious faith is, for many, not a matter of genuine conviction but of sentiment, friendship and family ties. There are easy replies to such skepticism, including the command shared across many traditions to love both God and neighbor. This implies does it not? a respect and, yes, a love for those who seek God in different ways.

Atheism, Christian Theism, and Rape (1997)
    Michael Martin
One of the more dramatic debating maneuver used by Christian apologists against atheists is to argue that atheists can provide no objective reason for not raping people. This startling claim follows from the apologists' wider claim that atheists can provide no objective moral reasons for anything. In this paper I will examine both claims in context of the debate between atheism and theism. I will maintain first that the theists' assume without good argument that an atheistic morality must be subjective. Second, I will argue that the theistic position on rape does not escape a special case of the Euthyphro dilemma:[ ] Does God disapprove of rape because it is bad or is rape bad because God disapproves of it? On the first interpretation of the dilemma theists can provide objective reasons for not raping, but so can atheists. On the second interpretation, theists can provide no objective reasons for not raping so that if atheists cannot, they are no worse off than theists. To be sure, some theists attempt to escape from the dilemma by appealing to God's character. But I will argue that they do not succeed and in fact beg the question against atheists. Finally, I will maintain that the Biblical view of rape should not be our moral guide: Not only does the Bible seem to condone rape on certain occasions but its attitude toward female victims of rape is insensitive and chauvinistic.

Welcome to a collection of quotations and essays about God from some of the greatest minds who have ever lived. You will be amazed to find out that most of the brilliant minds who have shaped our civilization were neither atheists nor agnostics. Most great writers, scientists, philosophers, musicians and artists believed in God and expressed their belief with reverence and humility. True brilliance brought them to acknowledge the existence of a mind greater than their own and, in many cases, to develop a personal relationship with the Creator. This work is meant to help many see the fallacy behind the myth propagated in some of today's academic circles that high intelligence will inevitably lead to atheism or agnosticism. The Philosophy of Atheism
    by Emma Goldman
First published in February 1916 in the Mother Earth journal. To give an adequate exposition of the Philosophy of Atheism, it would be necessary to go into the historical changes of the belief in a Deity, from its earliest beginning to the present day. But that is not within the scope of the present paper. However, it is not out of place to mention, in passing, that the concept God, Supernatural Power, Spirit, Deity, or in whatever other term the essence of Theism may have found expression, has become more indefinite and obscure in the course of time and progress. In other words, the God idea is growing more impersonal and nebulous in- proportion as the human mind is learning to understand natural phenomena and in the degree that science progressively correlates human and social events. God, today, no longer represents the same forces as in the beginning of His existence; neither does He direct human destiny with the same Iron hand as of yore. Rather does the God idea express a sort of spiritualistic stimalus to satisfy the fads and fancies of every shade of human weakness. In the course of human development the God idea has been forced to adapt itself to every phase of human affairs, which is perfectly consistent with the origin of the idea itself. The conception of gods originated in fear and curiosity. Primitive man, unable to understand the phenomena of nature and harassed by them, saw in every terrifying manifestation some sinister force expressly directed against him; and as ignorance and fear are the parents of all superstition, the troubled fancy of primitive man wove the God idea.

Or in Spain with 95-98 % catholic, only the half believe about the Christian God ? Because of the fact that in these statistics it is considerated the AFFILIATION...; but this is insufficient if the sociologist, the curious, or the analyst want to understand the reality about any country.

    Evangelistic Atheism:
    Leading Believers Astray
    By Dan Barker
This article originally appeared in the January/February 1993 issue of Freethought Today , published by the Freedom From Religion Foundation . Electronically reproduced with permission. Freethought is worth sharing with the world. If the conditions are right, it is possible for a freethinker to successfully evangelize a believer. "Evangelism" is a perfectly good word. The Greek word "angel" means "messenger." Evangelism is simply "good news." "Atheism" is positive. Although it is constructed with the privative prefix (negative in the sense of "without," not "against"), it should be viewed as a double negative. By comparison, "non-violence" is considered to be a positive word. Since "theism" is unreasonable and even dangerous, the message that we can be free of it is good news. Atheism is like having a large debt cancelled. I am not suggesting that every atheist should be an evangelist. Some are better off temporarily keeping their views to themselves for job security or family harmony. Some freethinkers wisely wait until they retire, when they have little to lose, before they become vocal. In certain communities, open unbelief can be costly. Nor am I suggesting that every evangelistic atheist will always be successful. I learned in the ministry that evangelism is like sales. You can't sell everyone. But you can't sell anyone if you don't first convince them that they have a need or desire for what you are selling.

    Atheism and Agnosticism
    1. Atheism
Scientific Thought (Broad 1923) held that the chemical properties of common salt could not even in principle be deduced from those of sodium and chlorine separately, at the very time at which the quantum theory of the chemical bond was beginning to be developed. Though the mind has seemed to some to be strongly emergent from its physical basis, it can be argued that developments in the philosophy of mind, cognitive science and neuroscience favour weak emergence only.
    2. An Adequate Concept of God
Foundations of Arithmetic One thing that will not differentiate the theist from the atheist is to say that God, if he exists, is necessary in the sense of not being dependent on anything else for his existence. The atheist will say that the universe fits this bill because the universe contains everything that there is and so is not caused by anything else. It is indeed hard to see what an adequate conception of God and his necessary existence could be. For the purposes of this article, let us explore what the relations and lack of relations between atheism and agnosticism could be. Here we shall neglect the requirement of necessary existence and in a later section we shall consider the case of
