concepts that will be most useful to you. My high school career was one in which I grew quite rapidly academically. I enjoyed science and decided that I wanted to be a scientist of some kind I entered Indiana University majoring in the field of physical science. It was actually at this point that one of the great changes that occurred in my life took place. I enrolled in a course in astronomy at the feet of one of the great astronomers of our day. In that particular course, we were studying the problem of originsthe creation of matter from nothing. As we discussed this particular subject, we went into all those theories that are in that particular material. We talked about the Big Bang Theory, the Quasistatal Theory, the Continuous Generation Theory, the Planetessimal Theory, etc. I read the Bible through from cover to cover four times during my sophomore year in college for the explicit purpose of finding scientific contradictions in it, By that, I mean statements in the Bible that were false that I could throw back at her to show her how ridiculous it was to believe in God. I had even decided to write a book called All the Stupidity of the Bible . Something amazing happened as I did this. As I considered and thought about these things, I found that I could not find a contradiction. I tried that whole year and years after to find a contradictionto find some kind of scientific inaccuracy in the Bible. I just simply was not able to do it. I gave up writing the book because of a lack of material! It is amazing to me that as I talk to people, I find many who claim to be Christians and who perhaps claim to have been Christians for many years who have not read the Bible through cover to cover once. I find it hard to believe that they believe in God very much if they do not even want to know what He has to say.

What's New
Site Map Links Apologetics Books ... Introduction
For first-time visitors Foundational Essays The core of Ebon Musings , these essays refute theistic belief, justify atheism from the ground up, and lay out the foundation for an atheistic worldview.
  • All Possible Worlds
The problem of evil - the question of why pain and suffering exist in a world supposedly ruled by a good God - is the oldest and most enduring argument against many varieties of theism. This essay presents a concise formulation of the problem from evil and argues that theists have failed to provide a satisfactory answer to it.
  • A Ghost in the Machine
An enduring theistic dogma is that each of us is inhabited by an immaterial soul that confers on us our consciousness and survives the death of our bodies. This essay powerfully refutes that notion, drawing on the evidence of science to establish that our minds arise from nowhere but our physical brains.
  • The Ineffable Carrot and the Infinite Stick
Some theists claim that atheism offers no standard for moral behavior, even encourages immorality. This essay falsifies that claim by establishing the source of an atheist's ethics, and then turns the argument on its head by exposing the simple-mindedness of the theist system of reward and punishment.
  • Life of Wonder
One of the most ingrained societal prejudices about atheism is that it necessarily implies a bleak, purposeless life without hope or meaning. This essay confronts that prejudice head-on and demonstrates that atheism is fully compatible with all the things that make life worth living.

84. Atheism
atheism. General Information atheism. Advanced Information The Greek word atheos, without God, is found only once in the NT (Eph. 212).
http://mb-soft.com/believe/txo/atheism.htm
Atheism
General Information Atheism, from the Greek a ("without") and theos ("deity"), commonly and loosely refers to the theoretical or practical denial of the existence of a deity. The concrete meaning of atheism has varied considerably in history: even the earliest Christians were labeled "atheists" because they denied the existence of the Roman deities. In Western culture, where monotheism has been the dominant mode of religious belief, atheism has generally referred to the denial of the existence of a transcendent, perfect, personal creator of the universe. To be an atheist need not mean that one is nonreligious, for there are "high" religions, such as Buddhism and Taoism, that do not postulate the existence of a supernatural being. Atheism should be distinguished from Agnosticism, which means that one does not know whether or not a deity exists. Monotheism has been so basic to and compounded with Western moral and philosophical beliefs as well as political institutions that until recently atheism has been widely believed to be both immoral and dangerous to society. Plato not only viewed atheism as irrational but argued that certain atheists deserved the death penalty. When Christianity finally became the dominant religion in the West, atheism and heresy were thought to be worthy of exile or death because, as Thomas Aquinas argued, it was a much more serious matter to corrupt the soul than to damage the body. Atheism was also dangerous to the political authority of Western monarchies that claimed to rest upon divine right.

Chat Room Join others in the Agnosticism/Atheism chat Discussion Forum Do you have an opinion about this page? Make it known on the Discussion Forum If there is anything as misunderstood and misrepresented as atheism, it must be agnosticism. There are many misconceptions about agnosticism, agnostics, and the reasons why anyone would adopt a position of agnosticism in the first place. This is unfortunate, because whether agnosticism is conceived of as a philosophy or simply an isolated position on the existence of gods, it is eminently reasonable and defensible. The definition of agnosticism is one of the more contentious issues - even many agnostics continue to hold to the idea that agnosticism represents some sort of "third way" between atheism and theism. Not only evidence from standard dictionaries but also a careful comparison between agnosticism and other ideas like theism and atheism reveal that calling oneself an agnostic by no mean excludes being either an atheist or a theist.

OK. Let’s start with a quick experiment. [Hold out your hand with a penny in it. Show it to the audience. Let it fall. Do this again. Hold out a third penny.] If I were to do this again, what do you think would happen? If we could get ten good Christians to pray that the next penny wouldn’t fall, would it still fall? How about one thousand Muslims? How about one billion people of any faith? I think that it would still fall. [Drop the third penny.] Our understanding of the world around us, and our abilities to predict what will happen are based on naturalism – the basis of science. Naturalism is how all people live their lives most of the time. OK, let’s do a thought experiment. If I were to take two pennies and glue them together, then drop them at the same time as I drop a single penny, would they fall twice as fast as the single penny? Aristotle thought so 2300 years ago, and for over 1900 years, his ideas were what was taught about this and many other subjects.

Introduction
I don't believe in the existence of God or gods, devils or Satan, angels, demons, or heaven or hell. These things are only inventions of our imaginations, and do not exist in reality. I don't believe in human souls or spirits, or life after death. I don't believe in the existence of any kind of spiritual world or supernatural world. These are all inventions of the human imagination and have no basis in reality. Well, fair enough. But so what, you might ask. Such atheistic beliefs are quite commonplace among educated, scientifically-literate people in the West. So why have a web page about it?
  • Well, firstly I grew up in an environment in which you had to explain why you did not believe in the supernatural. Hence this page as an explanation. In particular, it is an explanation for those who knew me before age 17. Because I was religious before age 17. Like many young people, I was interested in the origin and nature of the universe, an interest which led naturally, at least initially, to religion. When I was 17 I finally read the counter-arguments, and became an unbeliever. But both before and after age 17, I had nothing in common with those (probably the majority of society) who believe it doesn't
  • 89. Jesus' Ethics?
An argument that Jesus' moral teachings are in large part irrelevant, indefensible, or not original to him. The otherworldliness, harshness, and insistence on unthinking obedience, and meanspirited vindictiveness are not only unacceptable, but quite a long ways from the claim of moral perfection. What's more, his silent approval of things like slavery make him an unjustified model of morality.

    ABSTRACT
From Genesis to AD 2002 Change in the Universe is random according to the nature of matter and energy. The solar system (Sun, planets, moons, etc.), galaxies, etc. were formed by the condensation of matter/dust by gravity and by the rotation of this matter. The rotation resulted in objects circling each other according to their mass and distribution. The age of the Earth is given at about 4 billion years. For billions of years there was little or no life as we know it, only a mix of atoms and molecules, with no systematic reproductive process. PROOF OF EVOLUTION: As is obvious, every human is different.

As well as my professional and academic pages, I have a more informal collection of links, information and opinion on religious, philosophical, political and other controversial topics. These are my "religion and politics" pages - the topics you should not discuss in polite society. Why? Because they are the areas of human thought governed most completely by meme competition Religion - since it has no factual basis - is in fact nothing but meme competition.

Channel Policy Channel #atheism is open to people of all beliefs as a forum for discussion and debate of matters pertaining to the existence or non-existance of a god or gods. The channel is however run by atheists and it should be expected that the atheist viewpoint will predominate. Debate is welcome and encouraged. The channel may also be considered a community of atheists and freethinkers and is open for any topic of discussion of general interest to those on the channel. However, debate and focused discussion shall take precedence over idle chat. There are few channel rules, the utmost being personal respect for other members of the channel. Bear in mind religions and beliefs are not people and have no feelings. Personal respect will not necessarily extend to one's religion or faith. If any channel visitor is offended by the atheistic viewpoint of the channel they are welcome to leave. Thank you, and welcome to #atheism on

Review of Walking Away About Theism My view on the bible Pain and suffering Assorted Articles Why atheism will lose The Robot Rebellion of Richard Dawkins The Unraveling of Scientific Materialism Atheism Versus Theism Debates Why Challenge Atheism? In short the only reason anyone would say they are a weak atheist is because they realize there is little positive evidence in favor of non-God explanations for such things as the existence of this physical material world we live in. Commonsense suggests if there was strong evidence in favor of atheism there would far more strong atheists than weak. As a result many of the atheist websites and literature spend most of their time launching salvos against theism. The thought being that if theism is discredited than atheism prevails by default. This leads to what I call sound bite atheism. Atheism based on little else than brief essays. This is evidenced by popular arguments such as there is no more evidence for God than Santa or religion is the cause of all wars. Such thought bombs are easily exposed and refuted for being poorly thought out. Yet the march of atheists who visit my site touting what they think is irrefutable logic such as the above continues on.

Has Religion Made Useful Contributions to Society? by Bertrand Russell Excerpt: My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race. I cannot, however, deny that it has made some contributions to civilization. It helped in early days to fix the calendar, and it caused Egyptian priests to chronicle eclipses with such care that in time they became able to predict them. These two services I am prepared to acknowledge, but I do not know of any others.
