atheism
Atheism is traditionally defined as disbelief in the existence of God . As such, atheism involves active rejection of belief in the existence of God. However, since there are many concepts of God and these concepts are usually rooted in some culture or tradition, atheism might be defined as the belief that a particular word used to refer to a particular god is a word that has no reference. Thus, there are as many different kinds of atheism as there are names of gods. Some atheists may know of many gods and reject belief in the existence of all of them. Such a person might be called a polyatheist . But most people who consider themselves atheists probably mean that they do not believe in the existence of the local god. For example, most people who call themselves atheists in a culture where the Judeo-Christian-Islamic God (JCIG) dominates would mean, at the very least, that they deny that there is an Omnipotent and Omniscient Providential Personal Creator of the universe. On the other hand, people who believe in the JCIG would consider such denial tantamount to atheism.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - May 5, 2004 For more information, please contact: Ellen Johnson, President
Dave Silverman, Communications Director THURSDAY PRAYER EVENT VIOLATES SEPARATION, DIVIDES NATION OVER RELIGIOUS BELIEF SAYS ATHEIST GROUP An Atheist civil rights group today cautioned that political leaders, including President George Bush should avoid participating in Thursday's planned "National Day of Prayer" events which amounts to an unconstitutional government endorsement of religion. "This isn't about the freedom to pray or practice religion," said Ellen Johnson, President of American Atheists. "This is all about enlisting the aid of government leaders, including everyone from George Bush to state governors and local mayors, to promote religious belief and try to link religion with patriotism." "The message here, with all of these government officials involved, is that you're not a patriotic American if you don't pray and believe." "That's a message one would expect from Islamic mullahs, not American leaders," said Johnson. Dave Silverman, Communications Director for American Atheists, said that politicians who join in National Day of Prayer festivities "are sending a clear message that government needs to be a 'prayer bully' in telling American citizens when and where they should pray, or even if they should pray at all."

Alvin Plantinga
God and Other Minds The Nature of Necessity , and Faith and Rationality . Several of his articles, which have appeared in journals such as Theoria American Philosophical Quarterly Philosophical Studies Journal of Philosophy , and so forth, have been hailed as masterpieces of the metaphysician's craft. Atheological objections to the belief that there is such a person as God come in many varieties. There are, for example, the familiar objections that theism is somehow incoherent, that it is inconsistent with the existence of evil, that it is a hypothesis ill-confirmed or maybe even disconfirmed by the evidence, that modern science has somehow cast doubt upon it, and the like. Another sort of objector claims, not that theism is incoherent or false or probably false (after all, there is precious little by way of cogent argument for that conclusion) but that it is in some way unreasonable or irrational to believe in God, even if that belief should happen to be true. Here we have, as a centerpiece, the

Introduction
There's a lot of debate on the net. Unfortunately, much of it is of very low quality. The aim of this document is to explain the basics of logical reasoning, and hopefully improve the overall quality of debate. The Concise Oxford English Dictionary defines logic as "the science of reasoning, proof, thinking, or inference." Logic will let you analyze an argument or a piece of reasoning, and work out whether it is likely to be correct or not. You don't need to know logic to argue, of course; but if you know even a little, you'll find it easier to spot invalid arguments. There are many kinds of logic, such as fuzzy logic and constructive logic; they have different rules, and different strengths and weaknesses. This document discusses simple Boolean logic, because it's commonplace and relatively easy to understand. When people talk about something being 'logical', they usually mean the type of logic described here.
What logic isn't
It's worth mentioning a couple of things which logic is not.

Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... A > Atheism A B C D ... Z
Atheism
a privative, and theos God , i.e. without God Atheism is that system of thought which is formally opposed to theism. Since its first coming into use the term atheism has been very vaguely employed, generally as an epithet of accusation against any system that called in question the popular gods of the day. Thus while Socrates was accused of atheism (Plato, Apol., 26,c.) and Diagoras called an atheist by Cicero (Nat. Deor., I, 23), Democritus and Epicurus were styled in the same sense impious (without respect for the gods) on account of their trend of their new atomistic philosophy . In this sense too, the early Christians were known to the pagans as atheists, because they denied the heathen gods; while, from time to time, various religious and philisophical systems have, for similar reasons, been deemed atheistic. Though atheism, historically considered, has meant no more in the past critical or sceptical denial of the theology of those who have employed the term as one of reproach, and has consquently no one strict philisophical meaning; though there is no one consistent system in the exposition of which it has a definite place; yet, if we consider it in its broad meaning as merely the opposite of theism, we will be able to frame such divisions as will make possible a grouping of definite systems under this head. And in so doing so we shall at once be adopting both the historical and the philosophical view. For the common basis of all systems of theism as well as the cardinal tenet of all popular religion at the present day is indubitably a belief in the existence of a personal

ATHEISM
by Madalyn Murray O’Hair
The following is the text of an address given by the founder of American Atheists at the Eighth Annual Convention of the American Rationalist Federation, on 25 August 1962, before the US Supreme Court had agreed to hear the case now known as Murray v Curlett. The speech was originally printed in The American Rationalist, Volume 17, Number 3, September/October 1962.
The indestructible foundation of the whole edifice of Atheism is its philosophy, materialism, or naturalism, as it is also known. That philosophy regards the world as it actually is, views it in the light of the data provided by progressive science and social experience. Atheistic materialism is the logical outcome of scientific knowledge gained over the centuries.
We make a fundamental error, I think, as we tilt at the windmills of imagined gods. We need to review from where we have come, under what conditions, and to see the threshold upon which we stand now.
The Inquisition, a papal invention for suppressing all opposition to the Catholic Church, savagely persecuted all progressive thinkers; Giordano Bruno, Ludilio Vanini, and Galileo come readily to mind.

The Atheism Web
More on Huxley and the definition of Agnosticism
Huxley describes how he came to originate the term 'agnostic' as follows: When I reached intellectual maturity, and began to ask myself whether I was an atheist, a theist, or a pantheist; a materialist or an idealist; a Christian or a freethinker, I found that the more I learned and reflected, the less ready was the answer; until at last I came to the conclusion that I had neither art nor part with any of these denominations, except the last. The one thing in which most of these good people were agreed was the one thing in which I differed from them. They were quite sure that they had attained a certain "gnosis" had more or less successfully solved the problem of existence; while I was quite sure I had not, and had a pretty strong conviction that the problem was insoluble. And, with Hume and Kant on my side, I could not think myself presumptuous in holding fast by that opinion. [...] So I took thought, and invented what I conceived to be the appropriate title of "agnostic". It came into my head as suggestively antithetic to the "gnostic" of Church history, who professed to know so much about the very things of which I was ignorant; and I took the earliest opportunity of parading it at our Society, to show that I, too, had a tail, like the other foxes. [Quoted in " Encylopaedia of Religion and Ethics ", 1908, edited by James Hastings MA DD]
