ECU is a Planetarium and Telescope Control Program for Amateur Astronomers capable of simulating many of the features visible in the Earth's night sky. You only need to enter your geographic location and the time; the local sky will then be simulated on the screen in a colourful display. This application is Shareware! Home Planet
Home Planet is a comprehensive astronomy / space / satellite-tracking package. Well worth a look. It offers Solar and Lunar position and phase data, ephemerides for planet and asteroids, maps, catalogues and more. This application is Freeware! NGC View V6.1
NGCView is a program which departs from the traditional astronomical software paradigms of planetariums, ephemerides and text-based database programs. It provides a fusion of the best qualities of all three into a single program designed to optimize the time you are looking through an eyepiece. An evaluation copy of the program (30-day limit) can be downloaded. SkyChart
SkyChart 2000.0 is a planetarium program which provides accurate sky simulations. It accurately simulates the sky as it appears tonight, as well as hundreds or thousands of years in the past or future. The sky can be viewed from any place on Earth, or from any object in the solar system or beyond it. Also provides support for Meade LX200, Celestron AstroMaster, Orion SkyWizard and other telescope controllers.

I have many of them on my pc and use them often. Don't be mislead by "Freeware". Some of them rival or exceed the "Shareware" programs. Most are Planetarium programs, that is, they depict the night sky, user selectable from your location on the planet. They all have a homepage with descriptions of their product. If you are new to astronomy and don't know what to expect I recommend you stick with the Freeware programs until you get familiar with the sky. Then if you want a more complete program go for the Shareware. It's up to you. By all means, let me know if you try any of these selections and whether or not you found them useful. mailto:nlpjp@aol.com My personal freeware and shareware recommendations FREEWARE StarFinder Added 9/23/02 Great for beginners and only 300kb zip Csgw Skyguide An easy program for beginners to learn each constellation Hallo Northern Sky Excellent planetarium software Cartes du Ciel (SkyCharts)Some say it's the #1 Freeware planetarium Virtual Moon Atlas Fantastic Moon observing tool by Patrick Chevalley StarCats Viewer for the Bright, Hipparchos and Tycho catalogs

Astronomy Software on the Internet
by Rob McIntyre
Contents
There is now so many software programs available that I have split the listing into several sections:
  • Go to Titles for Windows, MacOS and Unix software, Go to Satellite for Satellite Tracking software, Go to Palm for Palm, Pocket, or Handhelds software. Go to Missing in Action for Titles that I can not find Web Support.
Introduction
When I first purchased astronomy planetarium software and found that it covered the time span for several thousand years either side of now, it seemed that this would be the only program I would ever need. That was not quite correct. Since then I have looked at (and used) several different programs that all have excellent features that I had never envisaged. But astronomy observational information is not static, and is now being updated faster than ever. With the advent of the Internet, this information is now available and in a format that computer software can immediately use. Here we discuss some of the many programs available and where and how to keep them current. There are two ways that software companies update; the first is to only issue major version upgrades (i.e. TheSky, Redshift), and the second is to also issue minor upgrades (i.e. Guide, Skymap). Companies using the second method respond quicker to suggestions and new events, for example release of RealSky Data. Upgrades of Comet and Asteroid data are handled either by downloading a complete current list from the source, or editing data files to input single elements.

Astronomy
by Michael Mace , PalmSource employee I have an 8-inch Celestron scope and I've used it for a lot of observing and a little astrophotography. When I started using a Palm Powered handheld, I found a lot of software available to help me observe. Not only are there great star-charting programs, but there are also programs that help you track and identify satellites, use your handheld in the dark without ruining your night vision, point your telescope automatically, calculate the positions of all the planets (and the moons of Jupiter), and a lot more.

Cartes du Ciel
is an excellent companion to Deepsky, and it's FREE!. This program enables you to draw sky charts, making use of the data in 16 catalogs of stars and nebulae. In addition the position of planets, asteroids and comets are shown.
The purpose of this program is to prepare different sky maps for a particular observation.
A large number of parameters help you to choose specifically or automatically which catalogs to use, the colour and the dimension of stars and nebulae, the representation of planets, the display of labels and coordinate grids, the superposition of pictures, the condition of visibility and more. All these features make this celestial atlas more complete than a conventional planetarium.
Deepsky integrates with Cartes du Ciel in the following ways:
  • Send objects from the Deepsky spreadsheet into Cartes du Ciel for display on its star charts.
View real sky CD images in Cartes du Ciel by selecting the object to view from the Deepsky spreadsheet.

This list is not a complete data set of possible places so I would be very happy of all kind of notices and information depending on this listing. For sites with multiple directories of interest I have pointed towards a common top-level directory. I count on you for updates as to the contents and other pertinent information regarding these sites. It has over 600 NGC and Messier objects including Alan Dyer's 110 best NGC objects from the Royal Canadian Astronomer's Society list among others. It has very helpful and elaborate filters and sorting ability for just about every need. It also has over 350 double stars. But the most impressive thing is the price. Cost me $12 to download! It's called "Star Party." Check it out on the link. Don http://www.pfdsystems.com/starparty.html
