We are proud to have achieved a grade five in the most recent (2001) Research Assessment Exercise. The spirit of enthusiasm manifest in the research activities of our staff also infuses undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Staff are active in a wide range of research fields including Astronomy, Condensed Matter Physics, Nanoscale Physics, Nuclear and Particle Physics, as well as Theoretical Physics. Courses in all of these topics (and many more) are available in our degree programmes, which are taught by internationally recognised experts. Our teaching is well respected, having been awarded 23 (out of 24) in the last assessment. The breadth of expertise in the department is exceptional for a department of moderate size, covering optical, infrared, and radio observations along with instrument development and theoretical and computational astrophysics. Students may find themselves exploring such diverse fields as star formation and stellar evolution, the structure and makeup of the interstellar medium in the Milky Way and other galaxies, the structure and evolution of galaxies, gravitational lensing, the cosmic distance scale, the nature of active galaxies and quasars, and computational gas dynamics as a tool to explore cosmic problems. Astrophysics graduate faculty from the physics department extend our expertise into space physics, cosmic rays, and early universe cosmology. For observational work, students and faculty use our Mt. Lemmon (1.5-meter) and O'Brien (0.75-meter) telescopes, as well as the national observatories at Kitt Peak, Cerro Tololo, Mauna Kea, Arecibo, the Very Large Array, and others . Further, we are very actively involved in projects with the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Hubble Space Telescope. Finally, we have guaranteed time access to the

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at NAU is home to active research programs in surface physics and astrophysics. Many opportunities for original research exist for undergraduates through the NASA Space Grant , the National Undergraduate Research Observatory (NURO) REU (Research Experiences for Undergrads) and as a part of the degree programs offered in physics and astronomy. Students work in partnership with faculty and are often published in scientific journals.
The facilities for use in the surface physics and astrophysics research programs include:
    • Scanning tunneling microscope
    • Atomic force microscope
    • X-ray photoelectron spectrometer
    • Research grade ellipsometer
    • Instrumentation for low energy electron diffraction
    • 31-inch telescope at nearby Lowell Observatory
    • 24-inch telescope at the Atmospheric Research Observatory on the NAU campus.
Some of the research topics sponsored by the NASA Space Grant for the 1997-98 school year include:
    • Infrared spectra of embedded luminous stars
    • Heterogeneous reactions on water ice films at stratospheric temperatures
    • The composition of Titan's troposphere
    • P.I.E. (Probing for Ice on Europa)

I am a millimeter-wave research engineer and a half astronomer in the Radio and Geoastronomy division at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) . I work on NSF 's Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory (AST/RO) project, which is the first submillimeter-wave telescope to operate year-round on the Antarctic plateau. I spent a year (2002) at the NSF Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station as the AST/RO winter-over scientist, fully responsible for all operational aspects of the observatory.
