Research Experiences for Undergraduates
The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) of the University of Hawaii (UH) at Manoa expects to offer between six and eight research assistant positions for the summer of 2004. These positions are funded through the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program. This REU program will provide undergraduates who are considering a career in science with the opportunity to engage in research with professional astronomers working on cutting-edge problems in astrophysics. The REU students will be full-time research assistants to a faculty mentor at the Institute and will work on specific aspects of an ongoing research program.

The Joint Australian Centre for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica (JACARA).
There is now a brand new JACARA web site at www.phys.unsw.edu.au/jacara This document is a source for information about astronomy in Antarctica.
    INDEX
    Introduction
The Joint Australian Centre for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica , JACARA, has been constituted to facilitate Australian participation in the development of Antarctic astronomy. It has joint nodes at the School of Physics in the University of New South Wales, and at Mount Stromlo and Siding Springs Observatories in the Australian National University. JACARA receives advice from the Australian Working Group for Antarctic Astronomy . This group was created by the National Committee for Astronomy in order to study the scientific potential of the Antarctic Plateau for astronomy. JACARA works closely with CARA, the Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica . CARA is a consortium of US universities run from Yerkes Observatory of the University of Chicago. JACARA are promoting activities, both nationally and internationally, that will facilitate our ability to operate an Antarctic Observatory and maximise the science that can be produced. Currently the major focus is on site testing to quantify the limitations to astronomical observations across the spectrum and determine the optimum site for an international observatory. Of special interest is the development of an

Please refer to the OFFICIAL BeppoSAX MISSION HOME PAGE at the Scientific Data Center (SDC) for updated information on the mission. The acronym SAX stands for " Satellite per Astronomia X ", italian spelling of "X-Ray Astronomy Satellite". BeppoSAX is devoted to systematic, integrated and comprehensive studies of galactic and extragalactic X-ray sources in the energy band 0.1 - 300 keV; the observational goal to be addressed is to continue and expand upon previous spectral and timing observations of celestial sources in those areas for which the existing information is missing or inadequate and will remain uncovered in the foreseable future (you can give a look at other past, present, and future X-ray missions

The research interests of RSAA staff cover the length and breadth of astronomy and astrophysics, ranging from planetary science to cosmology, instrumentation to theory. Some recent highlights include:
    • New Research Institute: the ANU Planetary Science Institute (PSI) established in May 2003 as a joint venture of the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) and the Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES). Mapping the Universe: several of the largest ever maps of the universe are now being completed by RSAA astronomers, including the and galaxy redshift surveys, and the Millenium Galaxy Catalogue. Together these maps give humanity its best ever picture of our universe, and they help us understand how galaxies such as our own formed. Stellar Populations and Evolution: The RSAA has for decades been recognised as one of the world's major centres for studying the life cycles of stars. The recent completion of the MACHO project, and the discovery of the oldest star in our galaxy have further strengthened our reputation in this field. Instrumentation: the RSAA has an enviable reputation for the design and construction of astronomical instrumentation: work done in partnership with many Australian companies. Recent contracts have included the multi-million dollar

The group (and the department) is undergoing a massive regeneration, with a new professorial appointment and two new lectureships in Astronomy. This is further to the recent ARC postdoctoral positions. The department has also made two new appointments in physics (one lectureship, one post-Doc). These are exciting times. On December 4th 2002 there was a total solar eclipse and the best place in the world to see it was the town of Ceduna in South Australia. It just happens that the University of Tasmania operates a radiotelescope just north of Ceduna and a team of us went off to Ceduna to view the eclipse, do some science and show off our beautiful telescope.
