Jobs: Research opportunities at Leicester, including PDRA on Brown Dwarfs and PDRA on Gamma Ray Bursts The XRA Group has a distinguished record in high-energy astrophysics, having played a leading role in X-ray observatories such as Ariel-V, Exosat, Ginga and Rosat, now continued with Chandra and XMM-Newton. Although an emphasis on X-ray astronomy remains, the research programme now makes use of the full range of ground-based and space-based facilities for multi-wavelength astronomy. Active research interests include: the study of white and brown dwarf stars; stellar coronae; cataclysmic variables; supernova remnants; normal, starburst and active galaxies; clusters of galaxies; deep X-ray surveys; and the cosmic X-ray background radiation. A wealth of X-ray data is now arriving from the XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories; both

Research Programs The Astronomy Department at NMSU is actively engaged in a variety of research programs, summarized in the 1998 report to the American Astronomical Society. We provide an environment for effective study and research, and encourage our students to participate in research activities, making use of NMSU's 1.0m and 0.6m telescopes , as well as the ARC 3.5m telescope at Apache Point Observatory near Cloudcroft, NM. Our students and faculty also make use of national facilities in the region, including the National Optical Astronomical Observatory at Kitt Peak in Arizona; the National Solar Observatory at Sacramento Peak, NM; and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Very Large Array near Socorro, NM. For more information on current publications, please visit our preprints list
NMSU is also the home of the Planetary Data Systems (PDS) node funded by the NASA.

Transit of Venus On 8th June 2004 a transit of Venus will be observed from Earth when Venus comes directly between the Sun and our planet and it will be seen to move across the bright solar disk. No-one currently living on the planet has ever witnessed this spectacle as it last happened in 1882. Scientists at the School of Physics and Astronomy will be recording the transit and we hope to show still shots from that recording on this page from the 8th June. To watch a live webcast of the event, visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/space/ or tune in to the programme on BBC2 featuring Dr Paul Roche and Dr Lucie Green from Cardiff University who will be reporting live from Egypt and the Royal Greenwich Observatory. The transit will start at around 6.19am British Summer Time and end around 12.23pm. If you want to get prepared, don't miss the FREE morning session by Dr Lucie Green to be given at the Centre for Lifelong Learning on Saturday 5th June, from 10.30-12.30. No booking is required. Many fields are now coping with a rapidly mounting problem: how to organize, use, and make sense of the enormous amounts of data generated by today’s instruments and experiments. Ideally, this data should be accessible to scientists and educators, to minimize the gap between current research, education and public knowledge, and to facilitate integrative research. The goal of this project is to develop an internet data resource in astronomy. Because of the nature of the data and analyses required, the data will be widely distributed rather than centralized, an approach that may prove to be applicable in many other fields. Today, instruments like the following are being used for systematic surveys of our galaxy and of the distant universe: The Hubble Space Telescope [HST]
Chandra X-Ray Observatory [Chandra]
Sloan Digital Sky Survey [SDSS]
Two Micron All Sky Survey [2MASS]
Digitized Palomar All Sky Survey [DPOSS] Together they will give us an unprecedented catalog to study the evolving universe—provided that the data can be systematically studied in an integrated fashion.
