Physics 120: Astronomy Projects
  • Due Dates
    • Paper 1 due 5 P.M. Friday 5 March 1999
(last day of class before spring break)
    • Paper 2 due 5 P.M. Friday 30 April 1999
      (last day of class)
  • Length
    • Variable, but note that each paper is a substantial part (20%) of your grade
    • Most of you will write a paper of about 2000 words (or about 5 pages of 12 point Times)
  • Grading
    • My primary criterion will be, Have I learned anything interesting from this paper?
    • As a science writer, you want to educate in an entertaining way. Remember though, your reader's time is valuable. A really good paper I'll want to photocopy for my records.
  • Topics
    • Anything relating to Astronomy. If uncertain, check with me. It is important to find a topic that interests you personally.
    • Here are some examples
      • constellations (names, history, evolution, ...)
      • spaceflight (history, future, ...)
      • stars (birth, life, death)
      • planets (formation, geology, exploration, ...)

      • Jupiter's red spot
      • the "deep" questions
      • the unknown
    • Use your imagination! Fascinating and appropriate topics are out there waiting to be discovered. If you're not sure a particular topic is acceptable (or if you're having trouble finding one that interests you), check with me first.

[102.03] Wide-field Astronomy Projects at the UKATC
T.G. Hawarden, M.M. Casali, W.S. Holland, R.J. Ivison, G.S Wright (UK ATC) The UK Astronomy Technology Centre is engaged on a number of projects which are defining the stare of the art in several areas of wide-field astronomy. The most advanced of these will equip the UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) with a wide-field NIR (1 - 2.5 um) imager, WFCAM, in 2003. WFCAM will use 4 2k-square HgCdTe arrays to cover 0.19 square degrees in a single exposure. It will have 0."4 pixels and will employ multiple exposures (16 in the basic case) and microstepping to obtain full sampling of the PSF. WFCAM will reach K=19.4 at 5 sigma over 1 sq. deg. in 1 hour. Several deep surveys are planned; details are at http://www.roe.ac.uk/atc/projects/wfcam/science/. The project is in collaboration with the SUBARU telescope of the National Astronomy Observatory of Japan. Major data centres and archives will be established within the UK widefield astronomy groups and at SUBARU. of sky in just 24 hours of observing; indeed it will map large areas of sky up to an order of magnitude faster than ALMA in compact mode; it will make major new contributions to all areas of astronomy, from the solar system to Z=10 galaxies.

Plant Projects Choose one activity to complete from each row. Create a 3-dimensional new plant of your own design. Make sure it has all of the basic plant parts and be sure to label them. 2. Draw a plant cell and a human cell. List the similarities and the differences. 3. Grow a seedling in a clear glass jar or tube. Record its growth daily in written and pictorial form in a journal. Then graph your seedling’s growth, also. Keep a log of the food you eat for 3 days. Classify your foods according to the plants they come from. Diagram a food chain. Describe how the food chain would be affected if any one of the links were to be eliminated. Write and perform a rap about photosynthesis. Make sure you mention all of the important components. Collect a variety of seeds. Mount and label each seed on poster board. Research an unusual plant. Write a short report of your findings and draw the plant. Try to reproduce a plant using stem or leaf cuttings or runners. Keep track of your start’s progress in a journal. Compare and contrast monocots and dicots.

    http://www.gcw.org.uk/astroidx.htm
Binoculars are an excellent optical aid to viewing the splendours of the night sky. Many households already own a pair and whilst these are fine for daylight terrestial use, they can quickly become tiring when raised up for star gazing. The solution is a Parallelogram Binocular Mount which takes the weight and provides a very steady image.
When using an astronomical telescope, even at relatively low magnifications (x50), it is remarkably difficult to point it at a particular star, planet or Messier object owing to its very small field of view. This Unity Finder or Reflex Sight enables the telescope to be quickly and easily pointed at any visible object in the heavens.
A small selection of photographs of celestial objects may be seen in the Astronomy section here. [ Home ] [Binocular Mount] [Unity Finder] [Astro Photos]

INTRODUCTION: Radio astronomy is a relatively new science compared to optical astronomy. There are however many sites on the internet with additional detailed information; click LINKS There are ways the amateur can participate in radio astronomy without constructing large dishes. Much of this will consist of researching information in books, magazines and internet resources . One site is by William Lonc who also wrote a book on the subject. Studies of HF propagation and HF noise is also related and of interest. Interception of Jupiter's emissions around 18-22 Mhz are also possible at times with the proper receiving equipment (HF receiver), antennas, and orientation of the antenna toward Jupiter. See the Jupiter's emissions link for details. Be sure to look for and listen to the Jupiter sound files found on that site. RADIO JOVE PROJECT Don't miss the NASA and JPL Radio Jove project. It includes a complete radio telescope kit with antenna you can easily build. The free software provides computer logging of your Jovian listening projects.
