important works are Ii Parlatore eterno, a musical farce (1873), and a ballet, Clarina (1873). In 1881 Ponchielli was made maestro di cappella of Piacenza Cathedral. His music shows the influence of Verdi, but at its best it has a distinct value of its own, and an inexhaustible flow of typically Italian melody. His fondness for fanciful figures in his accompaniments has been slavishly imitated by Mascagni, Leoncavallo, and many of their contemporaries. Ponchielli died at Milan on the I7th of January 1886. PONCHO (a South American Spanish word, adopted from the Araucanian poncho or pontho in the 17th century), a form of cloak worn originally by the South American Indians, and afterwards adopted by the Spaniards living in South America. It is merely a long strip of cloth, doubled, with a hole for the head. POND, JOHN (c. 17671836), English astronomer-royal, was born about 1767 in London, where his father made a fortune in trade. Re entered Trinity College, Cambridge, at the age of sixteen, but took no degree, his course being interrupted by severe pulmonary attacks which compelled a long residence abroad. In 1800 he settled at Westbury near Bristol, and began to determine star-places with a fine altitude and azimuth circle of 21/2 ft. diameter by E. Troughton~ His demonstration in 1806 (Phil. Trans. xcvi. 420) of a change of form in the, Greenwich mural quadrant led to the introduction of astronomical circles at the Royal Observatory, and to his own appointment as its head. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society oft the 26th of February 1807; he married and went to live in London in the same year, and in 1811 succeeded Maskelyne as astronomer-royal.

Science awards in New Zealand
The list below contains all the awards for science or technology which have been brought to the attention of the Royal Society. Note that the list contains only AWARDS (medals, dollars, certificates etc.) in recognition of past achievements, as distinct from any sort of GRANT to cover a future activity. For example, winning a fellowship to undertake a period of study, while indeed an honour, is regarded as a grant, and therefore not shown in the list below. In contrast, awards for past achievements carry no contractual responsibility for any future activity. To request changes to the list, please e-mail ceo@rsnz.org following the format used below.
Royal Society of New Zealand Medals (on behalf of the Government)
  • The New Zealand Rutherford Medal is the highest award instituted by the Royal Society of New Zealand at the request of the Government to recognise and honour those who have made exceptional contributions to New Zealand society and culture through activities in the broad fields of science, mathematics, social science, and technology. Gold medal awarded annually. $0
  • New Zealand Silver Medals for excellent contributions to the fields of science, mathematics, social science, and technology. Silver medals.

Information Handling in Astronomy:
Beyond Technologies and Methodologies
Abstract
A few comments are offered in the light of about thirty years of activities linked to the information flow in astronomy and of about two decades of blossoming of electronic networks and tools including the World-Wide Web. Some points are emphasized (such as the changing sociology of data centres) and wrong expectations are pointed out (such as the all-electronic era).
Introduction Let's face it: astronomy is largely a virtual science. With the exception of experiments carried out in situ by solar-system spacecraft, our knowledge of the universe is totally derived from photons reaching us from outer space. And because of the finite speed of light, we do not observe the objects the way they are, but the way they were when the photons we are collecting actually left them. As a result of the huge amount of data accumulated, but also by necessity for their extensive international collaborations, astronomers have been pioneering often in parallel with the high-energy physicists the development of distributed resources, electronic communications and networks coupled to advanced methodologies and technologies frequently much before they become of common world-wide usage. But exactly because of this kind of paradox (immense philosophical impact versus inability to interact with the observed subjects), astronomers have to be specially careful not only of the way data are handled and archived for their own professional usage and for the scientific memory of the future, but also of the way astronomy information in the broad sense is conveyed to society at large.
