THE INVISIBLE UNIVERSE ONLINE: THE SEARCH FOR ASTRONOMICAL ORIGINS
For CERTIFIED SCIENCE TEACHERS who are also COMPUTER SAVVY Graduate Semester Credit: 3
Time Commitment: 10-15 HOURS PER WEEK
Cost: $110 The Invisible Universe Online: The Search for Astronomical Origins for Teachers covers the long chain of events from the birth of the universe in the Big Bang, through the formation of galaxies, stars, and planets by focusing on the scientific questions, technological challenges, and space missions pursing the search for origins in alignment with the goals and emphasis of the National Science Education Standards. This course builds upon your existing astronomy knowledge and adds layers of understanding so that you have a deeper appreciation for the multiwavelength universe. In addition, many of our homework activities and discussions focus on teaching course concepts as a method to enhance your deeper understandings of the content. It is not necessary that you teach astronomy at this point in your career, only that you are open to critically thinking about how this content can be best taught to deal with learner misconceptions. We run on a Thu-Wed schedule. We have Spring Break from February 26 - March 3.

ASTRONOMY FOR TEACHERS
For CERTIFIED MIDDLE and HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS Graduate Semester Credit: 3
Time Commitment: 9-12 HOURS PER WEEK
Cost: $250 As a fundamental science, astronomy is the study of the motions in the sky, the formation of planets, the evolution of stars, and the origin of galaxies. This course, specially designed for practicing science teachers at the middle and high school levels, serves as a survey of topics in astronomy. The topics are closely aligned with the concepts emphasized in the NRC National Science Education Standards and the instructional strategy uses electronic collaborative group discussions in concert with hands-on laboratories and activities that use NASA data easily accessed via the Internet. Participants will need a reliable online service provider with 33 kbps or greater connection speed and routine access to a computer with a DSL or similarly fast Internet connection for larger media downloads. INSTRUCTOR:
Dr. Tim Slater is an Associate Professor of Astronomy at The University of Arizona Steward Observatory where he conducts research on the teaching and learning of astronomy and space science. He served as the lead project science director for the Montana State University NASA Center for Educational Resources (CERES) Project and develops K-12 curriculum materials for astronomy that are aligned with the National Science Education Standards. He is currently the Director of the University of Arizona Science and Mathematics Education Center.

Office: (303) 556-2454 (Vital Information: Please Read Carefully)
B asically, this is what you do: 1) Observe all deadlines ( Schedule
2) Read the textbook assignments and notes ( Schedule Notes
3) Perform, write up and submit all activities before their deadline ( Activities
4) Take the tests (Lecture classes take in class, online classes take online: Tests
5) Take the Final ( Final Your weekly readings, activities, tests and so on are listed with each week on the main page of the course ( home HERE'S MORE: In a nutshell:
This class is arranged more or less like my on-campus lecture classes. The main difference is just that you do not come to lectures on campus. This may or may not be like any other Internet course you may have taken, so don't expect it to operate just like another class you may have taken. Each week you will have a reading assignment that includes both textbook readings and online notes. In many weeks you also will have an activity assignment that is due Friday of the week noted on the schedule, which must be received by me via email by 5:00 p.m. Late activities will not be accepted, so plan ahead. Of the 10 activities assigned, the two with the lowest scores will be dropped. There will be no make-ups. In some weeks you will have an online test. Of the online tests, I will drop the test with your lowest score. This is to accommodate students in the event of sickness, accident, personal emergency and so on. However, I will drop only one test. If you miss more than one, you may want to consider dropping the course before the deadline because I do not give make-ups.

If this is your first class taken via distance education, you might find that the hardest part is not the material - instead, it is staying up to date by reading the textbook, accessing the online system routinely, and working at a steady, consistent pace throughout the term. And whether this is your first DE class or not, you may find Astronomy to be especially hard to understand, with the tremendous vastness of space, and enormous variety of strange objects. Here are some tips that might help you be even more successful in this class: Set a schedule . Decide when you will study for the class, and stick to that schedule! In a normal 17-week semester, plan for at least 10 hours per week of work , including reading the text, logging onto the online system to post questions and comments, doing homework, talking with me via the phone or email, etc. In abbreviated summer school sessions, you may spend up to 20 hours per week reading, watching videos, and participating! That is as much as 4 hours a day, 5 days during the week. Let me help you!

This course is primarily about the nature, origin, and evolution of the planets of our solar system and of their satellites. Special emphasis is given to recent spacecraft studies of the solar system. Related topics include the nature of comets, the uses of astronomical telescopes, and eclipses and other solar phenomena. Prereq: Two years of high school algebra or MA 108R concurrently.
  • Astronomy: Journey to the Cosmic Frontier provides a complete description of current astronomical knowledge, neither at an extremely technical level nor at a level that fails to communicate the quantitative nature of physical science. Although this textbook is not an on-line course, there is a rich collection of supplementary material on-line.
