Printable Version The Palomar Observatory, located in north San Diego County California, is owned and operated by the California Institute of Technology . The Observatory supports the research of the Caltech faculty, post-doctoral fellows and students, and the researchers at Caltech's collaborating institutions.
Palomar Observatory is home to the historic Hale 200-inch telescope . Other facilities on the mountain include the 60-inch 48-inch 18-inch and the Snoop telescopes. Yerkes Observatory is a research branch of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the University of Chicago . Until the mid-1960's, Yerkes Observatory housed all of the Department's activities (including managing the operations for McDonald Observatory in Texas from 1932-1962). Today the 77-acre, park-like site in southeast Wisconsin provides laboratory space and access to telescopes for research and instruction in ways that complement other facilities available to the Department. A substantial fraction of the University's library holdings in astronomy are housed at Yerkes.

Who was Charles T. Yerkes? Who was George Ellery Hale? The observatory was bankrolled in 1897 by Charles Tyson Yerkes, a Chicago transportation tycoon. The plan itself was masterminded by George Ellery Hale. The showpiece of the observatory was then, and still is, the 40-in refractor, in 1897 the world's largest telescope and even today the largest refracting telescope. Hale subsequently built still other "world's largest" (reflecting) telescopes in southern California. Hale also founded the American Astronomical Society in 1897 , and co-founded (with James Keeler) the Astrophysical Journal , which was edited at Yerkes until 1965 Virtual Tour

Its primary task is to operate the EVN MkIV VLBI Data Processor (correlator). JIVE also provides a high-level of support to astronomers and the Telescope Network. The subdivision of the electromagnetic spectrum into wavelength regimes is in part just a matter of convention, but there are also natural causes for a logical subdivision. The most important determining factor in this subdivision is the transparency of our atmosphere:
One can see that the atmosphere is transparent in only two wavebands: the optical and the radio regime. There is another band near 10 micrometer wavelength (which is in the so-called "mid-infrared" regime) and a few more narrow windows down to 1 micrometer at which also more than 90% of the incoming light can pass through.
In using specialized telescopes for observations of radiation with various wavelengths we are following a good example established by mother nature: The adaptation of our eyes to the maximum of solar light emission, which lies in the area that we call (quite suggestively) "visible light" (or also "optical light"). One can truely consider the wavebands in which the atmosphere is transparent "windows" to the Universe through which we are looking.
Conversely, the plot above makes it evident that most cosmic radiation does

There was an OPEN DAY at the Mauritius Radio Telescope (Bras d'eau) on Saturday, 16th November 2002 from 10.00 h 17.00 h, where some 500 people came to visit.

Astronomical Observatories Now Accessible over High-speed Networks
released April 25, 2000 A new high-performance Internet connection will transform the ability of astronomers to access world-leading telescopes located on the peak of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. The University of Hawaii and the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), with support from the National Science Foundation, have connected 11 of the world's leading astronomical observatories to Internet2 networks via the Mauna Kea Observatories Communication Network (MKOCN). With a capacity of 45 million bits per second, the new link will dramatically expand the capacity of astronomers around the world to remotely use telescopes located on the Hawaii mountaintop. The high-performance connection will allow the observatories to share more of their findings with the public through techniques such as virtual observatory tours and live video from Mauna Kea to museums, planetaria, and classrooms world-wide. The University of Hawaii at Hilo will be developing a new Mauna Kea Astronomy Education Center in its Research Park, which will utilize the high-performance connections to the observatories along with a planetarium, videoconferencing and instructional facilities.

While many forms of astronomical observation can still be readily conducted with a minimum of setting up, the ongoing 'CCD revolution' has again brought to the fore the value and convenience of having telescopic and other equipment housed in a permanent observatory. Local light pollution need no longer necessarily be seen as an obstacle to observing, and around the world there must be many individuals and organisations contemplating the construction of observatories, even in urban locations. This volume is aimed at them. Small Astronomical Observatories is the latest title in Springer's 'Practical Astronomy' series edited by Patrick Moore, and like its companion volumes draws on the experience and expertise of several authors. Twenty-five articles describe, with varying levels of detail, observatories constructed by lone amateurs, schools and other educational bodies. There are clearly two main approaches to observatory building: the dome, and the run-off roof. The aesthete may plump for the elegance of the former, while the pragmatist will happily settle for the utility and comparative ease of construction of the latter. Nuggets of useful information abound - again reflecting the authors' wide experience. For instance, the use of a piece of old carpet on a concrete floor may save that dropped eyepiece, and serves to insulate the observer's feet from some of the cold. A gap between the floor and telescope mount reduces vibration. Eric Strach rotates the roof of his solar observatory on roller-skate wheels, while Terry Platt's dome runs on golf balls!
