Did you know? About 70% of all stars are believed to be red dwarf types. These stars are smaller than the sun and give off much less light. No red dwarf is bright enough to be seen with the naked eye. A red dwarf called Proxima Centauri is the closest star after the sun. It is at a distance of 4.2 light-years from earth.

Is life the rule or the exception?
Is life a highly improbable event, or is it rather the inevitable consequence of a rich chemical soup available everywhere in the cosmos? Scientists have recently found new evidence that amino acids, the 'building-blocks' of life, can form not only in comets and asteroids, but also in the interstellar space.

Extremely rare molecule found in interstellar space
A rare type of ammonia that includes three atoms of deuterium has been found in a molecular cloud about 1,000 light-years from Earth. The comparative ease of detecting the molecules means there are more of them than previously thought.

26th May, 2004: The Protoplanetary Disk around AB Aurigae The star AB Aurigae is about 470 light years distant. Astronomers using the 8m Subaru telescope on Mauna Kea have successfully imaged the protoplanetary disk around the star using the Coronagraphic Imager with Adaptive Optics (CIAO) instrument which blocks out the light from the host star. What is of great interest is that there is a large amount of structure in the disk. Circumstellar emission extending out to a radius of r=580 AU is seen, with a double spiral structure detected at r=200-450 AU. There are four major spiral arms, which are trailing if the brighter southeastern part of the disk is the near side. What could cause such structure? There are two current theories. In the first a nearby companion star may gravitationally induce such patterns. (This effect has been detected in the circumstellar disk around HD 141569A by Clampin et al. 2003 The second theory requires the protoplanetary disk to be inhomogeneous so that small density enhancements grow into a spiral pattern as the disk rotates. There does not appear to be a nearby star to AB Aurigae, hence the structure appears to have an intrinsic origin. These results were published by Misato Fukagawa and collaborators in the Astrophysical Journal, Letters on April 10, 2004. (Ap. J. 605, L53).

    Friday, June 04, 2004 'Night Sky' for May 31, 2004 -
The waxing gibbous moon , the half-moon with a hump, dominates the evening skies now. In the absence of Venus, Jupiter takes on the mantle of "evening star" - the brightest starlike object visible at nightfall. It starts the night well up in the north, and sets just to the north of west around midnight. The moon will be the main attraction for casual observers this week, with full moon occurring within hours of perigee. At noon on Thursday, the moon will be in full phase - but not above the horizon. At 9pm on Thursday, the moon will be at perigee: the point of closest approach to Earth.
At perigee ("near-Earth"), the moon appears to be about 12% larger in diameter than it does at apogee ("away from Earth"). The moon's orbit is quite elliptical, i.e. oval in shape, and apogee is the point of its orbit furthest from Earth. This variation in size due to changing distance is not to be confused with the "Moon Illusion" which is an optical illusion that makes the moon seem very big when it's near the horizon. For your chance to enjoy the Moon Illusion, watch for the moon rising in the east-southeast as the sun sets in the west-northwest at about 5:20pm on Thursday.
Information provided by Perth Observatory, 337 Walnut Rd, Bickley 6076. Phone 9293-8255, fax 9293-8138. The monthly guided tour of the Observatory facilities will start at 2pm this Sunday June 6.
