The Hilo branch of the IfA is a state-of-the-art facility that supports the Institute's telescope operations on Mauna Kea and provides long-awaited expansion space for its research, technology development, instrumentation, teaching, and outreach programs. The $11 million 35,000 square-foot split-level building was designed by Oda/McCarty Architects, Ltd., of Hilo and was built by Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company. The Institute for Astronomy in Hilo will be a focal point for research and development in astronomical instrumentation, especially in large-format focal plane array development. The new facility will cooperate with UH Hilo and other observatory facilities in developing the scientific and technology base in Hilo. It will directly support the University of Hawaii's activities on Mauna Kea, including the operation of the University's own telescopes, and the NASA Infrared Telescope, which the University operates under contract to NASA.

On the 2-m telescope, in the RC mode, direct images of extended astronomical objects are obtained on astronomical photographic plates with size up to 30x30 cm There is an electronic and a mechanical workshop in the Observatory, allowing the manufacturing and/or reparation of astronomical and other devices there. The Observatory is located at 1700 meter altitude, in a beatiful natural environment and offers good living conditions. The IA and NAO employ about 50 astronomers which are working in following fields of research:
  • Small bodies in the Solar system (physics and chemistry of asteroids, comets, planet satelites)
  • Solar astrophysics (computer simulations of active processes, magnetohydrodynamical modelling)

Institute of Astronomy and Space Physics
Library
The organization of the library of the Institute of Astronomy and Space Physics began a few months after the creation of the institute, in November 1971. Its purpose was to make available up to date literature to researchers and technicians of the institute and to members of related organizations. Its material was constituted mainly by publications from national and foreign observatories and institutes, and also by duplicated material offered by related libraries. The library was subscripted to the main international periodical publications in Astrophysics, Astronomy, Physics and Electronics. Among the main publications available, there are:

Also preprints are received, and a large quantity of books have been bought bought regarding the interests of researchers in several areas. The list of publications was included in a systematic catalog to ensure a quick search. The library has at present about 80 periodical publications and over 2100 books.

Astronomical Institute is one of the three institutes of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Wroc³aw. The remaining two institutes are: Institute of Experimental Physics and Institute of Theoretical Physics . The Faculty administration and the buidings of both Institutes of Physics are located at 9 Maks Born square. Location Astronomical institute is located in the eastern part of Wroc³aw, in a quarter called Sêpolno, at the environments of the Szczytnicki Park, nearby the ZOO, Hala Ludowa and Olympic Stadium. The current address of the Institute is the following: Astronomical Institute, Wroc³aw University, ul. Kopernika 11, 51-622 Wroc³aw, Poland . Some laboratories, lecture room, library and staff offices are situated in three blue-painted buildings close to the Kopernika street. There is a dome at the top of the highest, three-storied building (left photo). Actually, the dome contains 20-cm Clark-Repsold refractor. Deeper in the area, the following buildings are located: new workshop with adjacent classrooms, small coronograph dome, and the dome with the vertical circle and transit instrument (both instruments were restored recently). On the premises of the Institute, but close to the Mickiewicza street, there is a building of the Space Science Research Center. The main building of the Astronomical Institute seen from the Kopernika street. Under the dome at the top of the buiding there is a 20-cm Clark-Repsold refractor.

The European Space Information System (ESIS) is a tool that allows the space science community to access catalogued and archived data from geographically distributed archive sites. The system had been based at ESRIN, ESA's establishment in Italy since its inception, but its various components were transferred to several European astronomical institutes in December 1995. They are now being implemented within the institutes' existing archive environments and will provide a basic access infrastructure to future archives. In the year leading up to the transfer, the system was adapted to support the institutes' environments. In order to fulfil all requirements and to establish a tool in which the scientific community can cooperate and access several archive sites, a multi-server/multi-client architecture, based on the World Wide Web, was adopted.
    Introduction
The European Space Information System (ESIS) provides 'homogeneous access to heterogeneously and geographically distributed data archives' in the astronomical and space physics domains. It was initiated in 1987 as a pilot project to support the space science community, but has evolved over the years to adapt to the changing needs and requirements of the community.
