It has a staff of about 100, astronomers, electronic engineers-physicists, software specialists, technical and administrative support. In addition, people from the University Astronomy and Physics Departments are affiliated with the Institute. The Institute headquarters are in Bologna. Other sections of the institute are located in Firenze, Matera, Medicina Noto and Cagliari. IRA operates the "Northern Cross Radiotelescope" built in 1960 and located in Medicina (near Bologna). It also operates the two 32-m radio telescopes at Medicina and Noto (Sicily) which are part of the European VLBI Network (EVN). A new 64-m radio telescope, the SRT, is under construction in Sardinia (near Cagliari). MAUNA KEA How the telescope campus serves the spiritual essence of this sacred place; how OHA and the sovereignty activists try to extort money and destroy Mauna Kea astronomy
The summit of Mauna Kea is the best place on Earth for astronomical telescopes, because it is at a high elevation above most of the Earth’s atmosphere, is far from urban lights, has reasonably easy access and generally good weather. But Mauna Kea is also a sacred place. And Mauna Kea is part of the “ceded lands.” And Mauna Kea is an environmentally sensitive area. Thus OHA demands money for “land rent” and uses religious and environmental claims (some of which may be sincerely held) as ways to extort money and power.
Hawaiian sovereignty activists like to say Mauna Kea is a sacred place with ancient shrines, and therefore it is sacreligious and a desecration to dig into the ground and to put huge telescopes there. But testimony by Ken Conklin shows that the activists’ religious claims are exceedingly superficial from the viewpoint of their own religion. Placing astronomical telescopes on Mauna Kea is actually a fulfillment of the spiritual essence of this sacred place according to the most popular Hawaiian creation legend. The testimony also discredits testimony from the sovereignty activists on environmental issues in view of their motives, and urges that legitimate environmental issues should be identified and dealt with by scientists rather than political activists.

2001. Several German astronomical institutes have partnered in order. to contribute their own data archives and relevant expertise,.
    http://www.g-vo.org/en/home/gavo-about.html
    German Astrophysical Virtual Observatory
Background The next generation astronomy data archives will cover most of the sky at high resolution and in all wavelengths, from radio to gamma rays. The ever-increasing amount of high-quality scientific data stored in such digital archives is becoming a 'source' that can be utilized by research teams in a fashion similar to observing with a real 'physical' telescope at a ground-based or space-borne observatory.
Community-wide access to such data - appropriately archived and documented - is obviously desirable. A connected and inter-operating set of astronomical archives can be viewed as an 'Astrophysical Virtual Observatory' in which a 'telescope' is represented by a network of facilities, whilst the 'instrument' is the suite of software tools to query and analyze the data. Within such a construct, it will be possible to perform, for instance, 'virtual surveys' of the real digitized sky.
The notion of a Virtual Observatory (VO) includes the concept of GRID-computation . Not only will the federated archives have a broad geographical distribution, but also the computer resources required to "mine" the data will most likely

    http://www.skyarchive.org/SSADC/about.html
S S A D C Sofia Sky Archive Data Center Space Research Institute, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
Main field of operation of the new datacenter will be the continuation of the wide-field plate archives development, wide-field plates digitization, and their image processing for the studies of different astronomical tasks. In our work we keep contacts with more than 200 astronomical institutes and observatories all over the world and especially with the European Southern Observatory, "Centre de Donnees astronomiques de Strasbourg" (CDS) and the IAU Center of Minor Planets in Harvard. The SSADC plans to provide a support for the wide-field plates digitization and pre- processing in all region of South- and East Europe and first of all for the neighbor countries. Close relationship in this direction already exists with astronomers with the Konkoly Observatory (Hungaria) the Astronomical Institute of Romania, the Belgrade Astronomical Observatory, astronomers from the National Astronomical Observatory of Athens, etc. The Sofia Astronomical Data Center has a close cooperation with the German astronomical institutes and observatories: Astrophysical Institute in Potsdam, Muenster University Computer Center, Observatories in Sonneberg, Tautenburg, Bamberg, etc. On other side development of the Sofia Data Center is mainly supported from the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, DFG (Germany), the European Southern Observatory and with a contract F-650 of the Bulgarian Science Foundation.

The Institute for astronomy in Hilo is a focal point for research and development in astronomical instrumentation, especially in largeformat focal plane array
    http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/hilo/hilo_dedication.htm
    IfA Hilo Dedication
The Hilo branch of the IfA is a state-of-the-art facility that supports the Institute's telescope operations on Mauna Kea and provides long-awaited expansion space for its research, technology development, instrumentation, teaching, and outreach programs. The $11 million 35,000 square-foot split-level building was designed by Oda/McCarty Architects, Ltd., of Hilo and was built by Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company. The building, at the University of Hawaii Hilo Research and Technology Park, was dedicated on February 23, 2001. UH President Kenneth Mortimer unties the Maile Lei at the dedication of the IfA Hilo facility, assisted by Dr Billy Bergin (member, Board of Regents), Rachel Fordyce (Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, UH-Hilo), Rolf Kudritzki (Director, Institute for Astronomy), Klaus Hodapp (Associate Director for Hilo, Institute for Astronomy), Harry Kim (Mayor of Hawaii County) and Joseph Blanco (Executive Assistant to Governor Cayetano) The Institute for Astronomy in Hilo is a focal point for research and development in astronomical instrumentation, especially in large-format focal plane array development. The new facility cooperates with UH Hilo and other observatory facilities in developing the scientific and technology base in Hilo. It directly supports the University of Hawaii's activities on Mauna Kea, including the operation of the University's own telescopes, and the NASA Infrared Telescope, which the University operates under contract to NASA.
