The foundation of the Max Planck Institute of Astronomy in 1969 came from the insight that a nationwide institute, furnished with powerful telescopes, was necessary in Germany if up-to-date research in the field of optical astronomy was to be possible again and research abroad was to be caught up with. The Max Planck Institute of Radioastronomy in Bonn, the Max Planck Institutes of Extraterrestrical Physics and Astrophysics in Garching, the Max Planck Institute of Aeronomy in Lindau as well as the department Cosmophysics of the Max Planck Institute of Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg deal with related questions that complement one another: observing in neighbouring spectral areas (radioastronomy, x-ray astronomy), systematical use of not ground-based observing methods (balloons, high-altitude research rockets, satellites and space probes) and theoretical treatment of astrophysical questions.
The Max Planck Institute of Astronomy consists of two parts: the central institute in Heidelberg was completed in 1975 and attends to the preparation and performance of astronomical observations and the development of new instruments and measurement techniques used on our telescopes. The close cooperation of scientists and technical staff is a typical feature of our Institute as almost every new astronomical question also implies new technical problems. In the years 1973 to 1985, together with Spanish offices, the German-Spanish Astronomical Center was set up on Calar Alto near Almeria (in the climatically favourable Andalusia) for the telescopes of the Institute. The facilities in Heidelberg and on Calar Alto are available to all German astronomers as well as to foreign guests.

Radio Astronomy in the Nordic- Baltic Region R adio astronomy and related techniques form the basis of activity in many research groups at several institutes in the Nordic-Baltic region*. The following samples activities in this geographic area: Onsala Space Observatory , Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. The older 25.6-m antenna in seen the foreground, while the newer more precise 20-m dish is housed inside the protective white dome in the background. Both these antennas are being used for Very Long Baseline Interferometry. Metsähovi Radio Observatory, Helsinki University of Technology. At left, the protective dome is put in place above the 14-m dish which is precise enough to study millimeter waves, especially feasible during the dry weather of cold winter days. For measurements at very short radio wavelengths (microwave), the climate in Northern Europe is too humid, why the corresponding instruments are placed in dry desert sites. SEST Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope ) is the only such telescope at ESO European Southern Observatory ) in Chile.

Kurze Historie
History in brief
: Astronomy was really established in Bonn with the nomination of Argelander (1836). He founded the "Sternwarte" at the "Poppelsdorfer Allee", which started operating in 1845. Beginning in 1953, its telescopes were relocated to the new observatory at the "Hoher List" in the Eifel range. With the possibilities of radioastronomy (establishment of the radiotelescope at the "Stockert") and of space research, new disciplines developed leading to the foundation of the "Radioastronomisches Institut" (1962), the "Institut für Astrophysik und Extraterrestrische Forschung" (1964) and the "Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie" (1966). In 1973 all institutes moved into the building shown above.
