Located in the middle of Hard Labor Creek State Park in Rutledge, Georgia (~50 miles east of downtown Atlanta), the observatory is a resource for professional and amateur astronomers. However, an additional service of HLCO has been to the public - bringing the wonders of the Universe to Georgia residents.
Professional astronomers from Georgia State University take advantage of the dark skies, away from the light pollution of Atlanta, Conyers, and Convington, to observe objects as near as the Moon and as far away as the edge of our visible Universe.

Use the moon's changing face to teach a lesson in astronomy.

"Mommy, the moon ball is following us." I was two, bundled up in the backseat of a car, craning my neck to peer out at the dark sky and the bright moon, which did indeed seem to go wherever we went. I would be willing to wager that the toddler who thought the "moon ball" was following her and her mom hadn't yet looked up to see that moon ball as just a sliver. . . . As I grew older, the moon's changing phase became harder to miss – I stopped calling it the moon ball and began to wonder just what I was seeing. Picture the scene in terms of a clock whose hands are moving backward. In this imaginary world, the moon rests on the clock's hour hand, Earth sits at the clock's center, while the sun shines far off in the direction of 12 o'clock. As the moon orbits counterclockwise around Earth, its position relative to the sun and Earth changes, giving us the phases.

The Universe at Your Fingertips is an activity and resource guide on astronomy. It contains 87 hands-on classroom activities selected from various sources by a team of teachers and astronomers. The activities are presented in 13 sections, on topics such as moon phases and eclipses, the sun and seasons, planets, the solar system, comets and meteors, and stars and galaxies, as well as less conventional topics such as space exploration, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, pseudoscience (that is, astrology), and astronomy in different cultures. Ideas for interdisciplinary teaching are given. For example, students use Styrofoam balls to model lunar and solar eclipses; they make a star chart to find constellations in the night sky at any time of year; they construct simple refracting telescopes; and they create lists of songs and other pieces of music that relate in some way to astronomy. 1. Section's history
Meteor Section is one of the oldest sections in the Astronomical Society Ursa. It's main function is to act as part of the international meteor observing network and to popularise Meteor Astronomy. The section publishes observations and related discussions regularly in the Ursa Minor magazine (UMi) and spreads information on meteor phenomena in general. Meteor Section was officially founded in 1976, when several different astronomy activity groups were officially recognised as part of the society's functions. The first section leader Markku Lindqvist, held the helm until the end of 1970's. Globally, in those days, the most significant organisation was BAA and some observing projects were accomplished by a handful of active section members. Seppo Salminen followed M. Lindquist as the section leader. In the beginning of 1980's the activity decreased, until the section again found a new leader, Pekka Parvianen, who did good job till the end of his term, 1986. During those years the section had become part of the international observing network and all observations became archived accordingly. In the list of merits of P. Parvianen, we can add the very first Meteor Section's "Bolide"-article ever, printed in the Ursa Minor magazine (UMi). In the summer of 1994 Marko Toivonen, the most active visual observer in the country, became the new leader. Responsibilities became shared, as Markku Nissinen took over the handling of radio observations and editing of the "Bolide" article in UMi.

    BACKGROUND
    The Sunset Astronomical Society was founded in 1975 to foster the development of amateur Astronomy in the east-central Michigan area. Members come from all walks of life and span a wide range of ages. Our activities include observing sessions using members' telescopes, operation of the 16" Celestron telescope at Saginaw Valley State University, public star parties and presentations, and friendly meetings where we share our common interest and learn from formal presentations and each other. Several members have gone on to professional Astronomical activities. MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
    Membership in the Sunset Astronomical Society is open to all interested individuals. Regular membership is $15 / year and includes a monthly newsletter, voting priveleges and new members receive a helpful Observing Package .
