Do Not Ignore Binoculars - SEE SPECIAL OFFER BELOW!
To most people, looking at the stars always brings visions of standing in an observatory looking through a telescope. When it comes to looking at the stars themselves everyone wants a telescope. Overlooking a very useful observing tool. A pair of binoculars. If you have never before studied the stars above, it may be a good idea to start with something simple like a pair of good binoculars. You really will be amazed at how much more you can see with just these, and they are not difficult to learn how to use. A telescope takes time and patience to learn. Far to many people go and buy a telescope without knowing what it is that they really want to do. Binoculars are also very handy to have around even when using a telescope. Quite often you may have trouble pointing the telescope towards the direction of the target. A glance through the binoculars and you can find your way around by 'star hopping'.
Is there an Ideal Pair?

Interstellar travel is a common theme in science fiction stories, but the obstacles to such journeys are in practice enormous. An alternative approach to interstellar exploration is to survey the sky in hopes of finding transmissions from a civilization on a distant planet, but such an effort has obstacles as well.

Be ready for a rapid transit! In this part of the world we may have mixed luck: we will be able to see the historic June 8 transit of Venus but look quick: we'll only see approximately the last 90 minutes of the event. Still, presuming clear morning skies, we'll do better than West Coast observers who will miss the show entirely! The transit will be in progress as the sun rises over Lake Erie the morning of June 8. No one alive has ever seen a transit of Venus it last happened on Dec. 6, 1882 and you won't have another opportunity until June 6, 2012. After that, forget it! It won't come around again until the year 2117. So be prepared this year and enjoy the show! Here are some important facts and helpful hints:
Remember: the sun is a dangerous object to observe!
  • Sunglasses aren't enough. You'll look cool, but you will permanently damage your vision if you look at the sun with sunglasses or otherwise unprotected eyes. DO NOT USE photographic negatives, smoked glass, CDs/CD-ROMs, smoked glass, Mylar balloons or wrapping, etc.
