Four Facts about
Asteroids

Most asteroids are located in slightly elliptical orbits between Mars and Jupiter. The largest is Ceres, measuring 930 km in diameter. more
Asteroids with orbits that bring them within 1.3 AU (195 million kilometers) of the Sun, and thus close to our planet's orbit, are called "Near Earth Asteroids" or NEAs. more
There are about 800 known NEAs. Scientists think that 700 of these are big enough to threaten civilization if they hit the Earth. Although Eros is a NEA, there is no chance that it will collide with our planet. more The closest approach of Eros to Earth in the 20th century was on January 23, 1975, at approximately 0.15 AU (14 million miles/22 million kilometers).

Leonid Meteor Shower/Storm:
Loneos Discovers Asteroid with the Smallest Orbit
Lowell Observatory press release, May 20, 2004 Flagstaff, AZ The ongoing search for near-Earth asteroids at Lowell Observatory has yielded another interesting object. Designated 2004 JG6, this asteroid was found in the course of LONEOS (the Lowell Observatory Near-Earth Object Search) on the evening of May 10 by observer Brian Skiff. "I immediately noticed the unusual motion," said Skiff, "so it was certain that it was of more than ordinary interest." He quickly reported it to the Minor Planet Center (MPC) in Cambridge MA, which acts as an international clearinghouse for asteroid and comet discoveries. The MPC then posted it on a Web page for verification by astronomers worldwide. It happened that all the initial follow up observations, however, were obtained by amateur and professional observers in the Southwest US. The additional sky positions measured in the ensuing few days allowed an orbit to be calculated. The official discovery announcement and preliminary orbit were published by the MPC on May 13. This showed that the object was located between Earth and Venus (presently the very bright "evening star" in the western sky). In addition, 2004 JG6 goes around the Sun in just six months, making it the asteroid with the shortest known orbital period. Ordinary asteroids are located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, roughly two to four times farther from the Sun than Earth, taking several years to go around the Sun.

Asteroids are small rocky metallic bodies in orbit around the Sun. Most are in the Asteroid Belt which orbits the Sun at a distance between Mars and Jupiter. They have been found from inside Earth's orbit out to beyond Saturn's orbit.
More than 7,000 asteroids have been discovered. Several hundred more are discovered each year. There are undoubtedly hundreds of thousands more that are too small to be seen from Earth.
Some have orbits that cross Earth's path and some have even hit the Earth in times past. One of the best preserved examples of that is the Barringer Meteor Crater near Winslow, Arizona.
The size of asteroids
Because they are too small to be considered planets, asteroids are known as minor planets. They range in size from Ceres, which has a diameter of about 620 miles, down to the size of pebbles. In fact, only 16 asteroids have a diameter greater than 150 miles and only 26 asteroids are known to be larger than 125 miles in diameter. Astronomers tend to know a lot about asteroids larger than 62 miles in diameter, and not very much about smaller ones. Some suggest there could be as many as a million or more asteroids under a mile in diameter. Even so, the total mass of all the asteroids probably is less than that of the Moon.

Where is the Asteroid Belt?
The asteroid belt lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. There are so many that they are divided into different groups such as the Trojan asteroids which are 60 degrees in front of and behind the orbit of Jupiter. Other groups of asteroids include the Amor asteroids which cut across the orbit of Mars and the Apollo asteroids that cut across the orbit of the Earth and are probably to blame for the asteroid craters on earth and in the future they might be a source of metals and other minerals for us to mine in space. Some of the asteroids which are close to the earth were photographed and investigated by the space craft Galileo when it was on it's way to Jupiter. It took the first ever close up pictures of an asteroid and showed that the asteroid 951 Gaspa was covered in craters and had a layer of loose fragmentscovering it.

http://www.skymap.com/asteroids.htm
In order to display accurate asteroid positions, SkyMap Pro needs to have access to up-to-date orbital elements. Not only are new asteroids constantly being discovered, but all orbital elements slowly change with time, and should only be used for a few months at most. The organization responsible for coordinating new asteroid discoveries and producing authoritative orbital elements is the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams . They kindly make this data available in a format directly suitable for use by SkyMap Pro To download the latest set of orbital elements containing information about all "numbered" asteroids, proceed as follows:
  • Follow this link to download the latest set of asteroid orbital elements to your computer. This will be a file called "SkyMap.ZIP". Unzip the file to extract the data catalog; this will be called "SkyMap.CAT". In SkyMap Pro , select the Catalog page of the asteroid configuration dialog, and open the new file. Exit the asteroid configuration dialog, and select the File/Save Defaults menu item to make the new catalog the default catalog for future runs of the program.

Two asteroids become Irish rock legends
larger (CNN) No word on whether they are green or not, but two asteroids have been given Irish names just in time for St. Patrick's Day. Ardmacha and Armaghobs, discovered by leading asteroid hunter Eleanor Helin, received their new designated titles from the International Astronomical Union to recognize Irish contributions to space research. The first asteroid was given the original name of the town of Armagh in Northern Ireland, which has hosted the Armagh Observatory since 1790. Ardmacha is the ancient Gaelic name for the city, which tradition holds St. Patrick founded. MESSAGE BOARD Stargazing "The City of Armagh is steeped in history. It is the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland and home of the venerable Armagh Observatory," announced an International Astronomical Union citation. According to legend, St. Patrick chose Ardmacha as the center of his mission in Ireland, building his main church on one of its seven hills in 445.

More Moons Around Earth? It’s Not So Loony
    By Robin Lloyd
    Senior Science Writer

    posted: 11:42 am ET
    29 October 1999
Earth has a second moon, of sorts, and could have many others, according to three astronomers who did calculations to describe orbital motions at gravitational balance points in space that temporarily pull asteroids into bizarre orbits near our planet. The 3-mile-wide (5-km) satellite, which takes 770 years to complete a horseshoe-shaped orbit around Earth, is called Cruithne and will remain in a suspended state around Earth for at least 5,000 years. Cruithne, discovered in 1986, and then found in 1997 to have a highly eccentric orbit, cannot be seen by the naked eye, but scientists working at Queen Mary and Westfield College in London were intrigued enough with its peregrinations to come up with mathematical models to describe its path. That led them to theorize that the model could explain the movement of other objects captured at the gravitational balance points that exist between all planets and the sun. Images

Is it worth more than a few quarters
Recently it seems that more games has been trying to jump on the classic-game-conversion bandwagon, a fad that started around the time that Hasbro made some big bucks with their Frogger conversion. Some conversions, like Activision's Battlezone , took a few "creative liberties" and added a whole slew of new technology available in this day and age, while others, like Hasbro's Frogger or Centipede stayed relatively close to their predecessors. Asteroids , Activision's latest classic conversion, leans more towards the latter - there are the obvious improvements in graphics, and sound, but the game's basic gameplay stays relatively the same. Now, if you aren't aware of how Asteroids is played, well, I represent the entire gaming community when I hang my head in despair.
