Project NEAR NEAR Lands on Eros Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Credit NASA with another milestone in space exploration: On February 12, 2001, a spacecraft landed on the surface of an asteroid for the first time in history. After a year spent orbiting the asteroid 433 Eros, the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft made a controlled descent to the surface. But what exactly is an asteroid? And what was the NEAR Shoemaker mission about? Photo courtesy NASA/JHUAPL NEAR descends to the surface of 433 Eros. In this edition of HowStuffWorks , we will examine these tiny bodies of our solar system and the successful mission to study them.

    What are asteroids?
An asteroid is a large rock in outer space. Some, like Ceres, can be very large, while others are as small as a grain of sand. Due to their smaller size, asteroids do not have enough gravity to pull themselves into the shape of a ball. Astronomers group asteroids into different categories based on the way they reflect sunlight. The asteroid belt is divided into an inner belt and an outer belt. The inner belt which is made up of asteroids that are within 250 million miles of the Sun contains asteroids that are made of metals. The outer belt, which includes asteroids 250 million miles beyond the Sun, consists of rocky asteroids. These asteroids appear darker than the asteroids of the inner belt, and are rich in carbon. Where did the Asteroid Belt come from? Asteroids are left over materials from the formation of the Solar System. These materials were never incorporated into a planet, because of their proximity to Jupiter's strong gravity.

When Macromedia released Flash MX, I couldn't wait to play with it. With its new drawing features and ability to create movie clips in ActionScript, I was all aglow with accomplishing "the impossible": making the classic arcade game Asteroids completely with code, just as Atari did it over 20 years ago. Within a surprisingly short amount of time I was able to accomplish this small feat. This article explains how you can do it too. I call this game "Asteroids MX." Although you should feel free to build the game no matter how comfortable you think you are with ActionScript, I do assume you're familiar with the fundamentals of programming. If you're unfamiliar with programming basics (arrays, functions, assigning values to variables) or some basic elements of ActionScript (dot-syntax, assigning and positions, the

Comets and Asteroids and Future Cosmological Catastrophes Compiled By Glen W. Chapman Aug. 1996
The following information was taken from the book of Dr. Frank Close. titled Apocalypse When
    Comets
"On 30 August 1979 a satellite orbiting the earth recorded a catastrophic event - the death of a heavenly body. The Sun's gravity had ensnared Comet 'Howard-Koomen-Michels 1979XT', which fell headlong into the stellar furnace. Within a matter of seconds the comet, larger than the Earth, was destroyed. The immense power of the Sun vaporised the comet as an elephant destroys an ant. The debris scattered for millions of miles in the Sun's atmosphere. The comet's head is deep frozen when far from the Sun where the ambient temperature is -270 degrees Centigrade. The ice contains deep-frozen ammonia, methane and balls of gravel. The largest asteroids are as big as countries. Ceres spans France and Belgium. Pallas and Vesta are as big as Southern Scandinavia and Juno is the size of Ireland . None of these comes anywhere near our orbit to threaten us, but many much smaller asteroids actually cross the Earth's orbit. These mavericks are called 'Apollo Objects' after the half-mile diameter asteroid Apollo, which was discovered when it approached near to the Earth in 1932. Apollo Objects Recent searches for Earth-crossing asteroids suggest that they could be numerous. None of them is larger than a few miles in diameter but a collision would wreak havoc for hundreds of miles and the disturbance of the atmosphere would cause great storms at least. The first hints of such an awful possibility emerged in 1898 with the discovery of Eros an asteroid that comes within Mars's orbit. n this century we have on several occasions come within days or even hours of hitting an asteroid. The future is not likely to b any different. Every few years one or other of the Earth-crossing Apollo objects will come within hours of hitting us. In time it i certain that we and one of them will score a bull's-eye.

    My Astronomy Page
Imagine living out in space, perhaps on another planet or a spaceship. You would be able to meet different creatures that were previously unheard of and see colors that are unknown to mankind. Whether or not we’d actually be able to live in space, humans will definitely try to find a way to live on some kind of spacecraft outside the solar system. Astronomy is defined as the study of space beyond Earth. There are many different types of objects in the universe, many of which we haven’t discovered or have yet to understand. Our own solar system is composed of the planets and their satellites also known as moons, comets, meteors, asteroids, and, most importantly, the sun. Mercury is the closest planet to the sun in our solar system. At first, scientists thought that the planet was very similar to the moon, but it is hard for them to observe Mercury because it is so close to the sun. When the first pictures of Mercury were taken on March 29, 1974, astronomers did in fact find features similar to the moon. Scientists were surprised at how many craters the planet has, which are similar to the other ones on all the planets and moons in the inner solar system. The scientists also found cliffs on Mercury. The planet is 4878 kilometers in diameter and takes 88 days to completely orbit the sun. Venus is the second planet from the sun and the closest to Earth. It was the first planet to be explored. When scientists first looked at it in the 1950s, they thought the clouds were the surface. But when they had a chance to look through the thick clouds, they found a strange kind of volcano. Instead of the normal characteristics of a volcano, these had lava coming up out of the ground. Scientists called these “coronas”. Venus is 12,103 kilometers in diameter and its day is 243 Earth days, which is longer than its year.
