The GK-12 Program is a collaboration of three campuses: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and University of Alabama at Huntsville. The selected fellows collaborate with SMET and Education faculty and participating K-12 teachers to integrate the use of computer-based modeling and scientific visualization in science and mathematics education. Responsibilities of these fellows include visiting classrooms to observe, offering assistance to the collaborating teachers, and co-teaching courses with these teachers. Description: The GK-12 program extends the catalyzing impact of the Educational Grid program, a consortium committed to developing, testing, and disseminating systemic approaches to integrate the use of computer-based modeling and scientific visualization in science and mathematics education. The role of GK-12 fellows is to bring to each team content expertise and experience with applications of computational science, modeling, and visualization. Fellows will benefit by improving their own computational skills, learning to relate complex science and mathematics concepts to others, becoming comfortable with teaching, and by understanding how they can participate in the improvement of science and mathematics education. Teachers and education faculty benefit from access to content expertise, assistance with the use of computational modeling and visualization tools, and by learning current scientific methods. The main objectives include:

Mining engineers require a broad understanding of basic sciences, engineering, and economic principles. General education, communications skills, and comprehension of social factors are also important, since engineers often assume managerial functions within the mining industry. The Michigan Tech Mining Engineering degree program offers advantages associated with a friendly learning environment and closely knit educational support group. These conditions allow students to interact more freely with other students and faculty, resulting in a more in-depth understanding of their prospective careers and better than average job placement.
Mining Engineering Program Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Engineering
Environmental Programs Mining impacts the environment in the areas of land disturbance, air pollution, and water pollution. With the increasing awareness and concern for the environment by the public and the rapid expansion of environmental regulations, there is a greater demand for engineers with the knowledge and skills required to assess, characterize, and remediate environmental problems related to mineral exploitation, handling, processing, and disposal.

Computers and the Disabled
One of the most socially responsible areas of research in computer science is in the area of applying computer technology to help people with disabilities. Here there is often a direct benefit to a population which is generally considered problematic for society. From systems that aid in overcoming mobility problems to augmentative and alternative communication, this research is aimed at giving everyone a chance at a productive and fulfilling life. This research includes cutting edge technology in graphics, robotics, speech recognition, and image processing. For examples of research in this area, see my papers The following is a growing list of sites that either perform basic research or provide direct services to people with disabilities. Although some attempt has been made to categorize the links, realize that many of the links fit in more than one category - in such a case a somewhat arbitrary decision was made about what category to place them in. Finally, appearance on this list does not in any way constitute an endorsement of either the company or products.

Computer technology is becoming a more important component of high school and college science classes. Computer-controlled laboratory systems allow a person to make measurements with sensors connected to computers. Experiment simulation software may be included with textbooks. For students with a physical or visual disability, combining these science technologies with computer access technology and alternative techniques may provide them with a means to actively participate in science laboratories for the first time. This session will demonstrate some of these technology combinations and provide participants with an opportunity to complete several experiments.

I'm writing this article on my computer with a pen input tablet, forsaking the usual speed and ease of the keyboard to see how the other 14 percent lives. I'm referring to the 39.5 million Americans over age 5 with some kind of disability, acording to the 2000 U.S. census. When I broke a bone in my right hand recently, I was suddenly thrust into that other world. I decided to explore the state of assistive technologies and see how well I would get along. I learned to touch type several years ago, so I knew when I began this expedition that having to learn another input method would be odious. It's hard to find a substitute for the speed and simplicity of keyboard input once you've become proficient. My first foray into assistive technology was another input method in which I'm practiced the PalmPilot's Grafitti language. I've written entire articles on the Palm while travelling about the country, so writing things in the device's built-in notepad software and then transferring it to my computer desktop seemed like a fair idea.

Prospective Students FAQ
What languages will I learn? Most programming in lower level computer science courses is done in C++. In other courses, you might learn Java, Assembler, Lisp, or Perl. However, the study of Computer Science is a lot more than just learning languages. In all of your courses, learning a new programming language will be incidental to the content of the course. How does Computer Science differ from Computer Engineering? Computer Science is primarily the study of the programming process and the design of computer software. In addition to learning good programming practices, students are exposed to applied areas such as artificial intelligence, databases, programming language design, and operating systems. Computer Engineering is more concerned with the design of computer hardware and circuit design. Computer Engineers also take traditional engineering courses such as Chemistry of Materials and Engineering Design.
Regardless of your choice of major, you can take courses in either program; engineering students can take Computer Science courses, and Computer Science majors can take engineering courses.
