How do you indentify possible dyslexia in a pupil?
The criteria most commonly used in assessment is the disparity (difference) between a pupil's intelligence and their actual achievement.
If a pupil tou teach appears to speak and listen normally, yet they are unable to read and spell, then there may be more to check out.
Some of the well-known symptoms of dyslexia are:
  • confusion over the direction letters face (b/d, p/9, p/q);
  • difficulties with left and right;
  • difficulties with keeping organized;
  • difficulties with spelling
  • difficulties with directions (e.g. east and west);
  • missing out words when reading.
More information What causes dyslexia To be quite honest, nobody quite knows at the moment. There has been a real increase in the amount of research taking place, and a number of possibilities are beginning to emerge, but the waters are still fairly murky. The overall picture is that dyslexia can be caused in two ways: 1. by hearing problems at an early age; and

Digging Beneath the Surface of Assessment
Each week, an educator takes a stand or shares an Aha! moment in the classroom in the Education World Voice of Experience column. This week, educator Brenda Dyck reflects on a recent study that she tried to mimic with her own students. The study used students' drawings of themselves in test-taking situations to gather information about how the students feel about math, tests, and themselves. Dyck has collected the data, but the most important question remains: How will she use this information to create positive math experiences for her students? Included: Tips for creating a classroom climate of care and respect.
Updating my education paradigm has kept me hopping! Just when I am confident that I am certain about what I know, someone challenges my thinking. This time it happened in math class.

    Test Better, Teach Better: The Instructional Role Of Assessment is an informative guideline by W. James Popham (Professor Emeritus, UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies) to using test data to improve classroom instructors ability to educate children and prepare them for the future. From the often-misused value of standardized achievement tests; to applying tests judiciously in order to clarify ones curriculum; to minimizing bias and taking it into account, and more, Test Better, Teach Better is enthusiastically recommended reading for classroom educators dedicated to utilizing every means at their disposal to improve the academic abilities of their students regardless of the subject matter being taught. This collection of NWREL resources focuses on Assessment . Clear educational targets and exacting standards often elude students in America's classrooms. Learning goals are fuzzy. State and district standards are buried in policy manuals. Assessment methods don't match teaching practices. Progressive schools teach students to solve problems, work in teams, think creatively, and be innovative. But many of those same schools then line students up in rows, hand them standardized test booklets, give them No. 2 pencils, and tell them to fill in the bubbles.
    American schoolchildren take 100 million standardized tests a year. If the average test has 100 multiple-choice questions, students fill in 10 billion bubbles annually. But those bubbles are beginning to burst as educators and policymakers acknowledge that too often, schools fail to test what they teach. Or, conversely, schools tailor curriculum to fit multiple-choice tests that measure memorization and fact-retention instead of critical thinking and other complex skills we want kids to acquire. How much does college teach – and should we care? Educators decry the lack of national comparisons and consistent testing Friday, December 29, 2000 By DAVID ABEL
    THE BOSTON GLOBE As high school seniors begin narrowing their choices for college, they're finding a dearth of data on perhaps the most crucial factor: at which school can they expect to learn the most. There's mountains of available information on the size of the institutions, makeup of the student body, costs, courses and social life. Although many national rankings appear to evaluate college academics, educators say there are no common benchmarks that allow for meaningful state-to-state comparisons. A recent national report on higher education decried the lack of educational performance statistics for college students and awarded an "incomplete" to all 50 states on the subject of learning. "As an educator, it's an embarrassment that we can tell people almost anything about education except how well students are learning," said Patrick Callan, president of the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, the California-based think tank that issued the report.

This information is essential for parents, schools, districts and states in their efforts to ensure that no childregardless of race, ethnic group, gender or family incomeis trapped in a consistently low-performing school.

    Changes in Assessment
    Critics of conventional testing and assessment methods argue that such assessment tools as standardized, objective tests often do more harm than good, especially for underachieving students. Alternative forms of assessment and reward structures are being proposed and developed. These alternative assessment strategies are designed to have students demonstrate what they have learned rather than how well they take a test, and to motivate rather than discourage students who start out well below average. Although such approaches are not widely used at this time, there is growing interest in them. Alternative assessment . "Alternative" or "authentic" assessments have become catchwords of the current reform movement. Standardized and other short-answer tests are criticized for being biased in favor of white, middle-class children, for encouraging the teacher to "teach to the test" rather than to the child, and for emphasizing low-level skills and piecemeal knowledge rather than student understanding and performance. Forms of evaluation that test how much students know at a single point in time are being challenged by those arguing for assessment procedures that demonstrate how well students think and how well they articulate their ideas in a variety of media. Alternative forms of assessment may offer new opportunities for success to students at risk for several reasons. Some students may not be able to demonstrate what they have actually learned on objective tests when the test assumes other skills in which they are weak, or the test situation does not encourage them to try hard. For example, a mathematics test with many word problems will be unfair to limited-English-proficient students and other young people who are poor readers but who have actually mastered the math problem-solving skills being tested. Also, many older students with a personal history of low scores on standardized tests may no longer strive to do well on current tests or may be deterred by high test anxiety.

    Critical Issue: Rethinking Assessment and Its Role in Supporting Educational Reform
    ISSUE : Assessment of student achievement is changing, largely because today's students face a world that will demand new knowledge and abilities. In the global economy of the 21st century, students will need to understand the basics, but also to think critically , to analyze, and to make inferences. Helping students develop these skills will require changes in assessment at the school and classroom level, as well as new approaches to large-scale, high-stakes assessment.
    Linda Bond, director of assessment at NCREL, explains how the new skills needed in the 21st-century global economy have spurred the accountability/assessment movement in education.
    Excerpted from NCREL's Policy Talks , audiotape #2, Reaching for New Goals and Standards: The Role of Testing in Educational Reform Policy (NCREL, 1994). [Audio Comment, 204k]. A text version is available.
    OVERVIEW
    As society shifts from an industrial age, in which a person could get by with basic reading and arithmetic skills, to an information age, which requires the ability to access, interpret, analyze, and use information for making decisions, the skills and competencies needed to succeed in today's workplace are changing as well (Bond, 1992; National Center on Education and the Economy, 1989; and U.S. Department of Labor, 1991). In response to these changes, content standards - the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed for students to achieve at high levels - are being developed at the national and state levels in areas such as mathematics, science, geography, and history. These standards have been synthesized in

    Teaching to the Test
    By Lloyd Bond A recurring criticism of tests used in high-stakes decision making is that they distort instruction and force teachers to "teach to the test." The criticism is not without merit. The public pressure on students, teachers, principals, and school superintendents to raise scores on high-stakes tests is tremendous, and the temptation to tailor and restrict instruction to only that which will be tested is almost irresistible. Although many view teaching to the test as an all or none issue, in practice it is actually a continuum. At one extreme, some teachers examine the achievement objectives as described in their state's curriculum and then design instructional activities around those objectives. This is done without regard to a particular test. At the other extreme is the unsavory and simply dishonest practice of drilling students on the actual items that will appear on the tests. But is teaching to the test all bad? Emphatically not. Consider the coach who drills young athletes on the very skills they will perform in competition, or the typing instructor who teaches students precisely the finger arrangements and keystrokes that will be used in typing. These practices are not seen as unethical or unsavory for the simple reason that in these two domains instruction and assessment merge into a single activity. Indeed, instructing students on anything other than the actual test itself seems illogical.
