Inaugurating the three-day conference of diaspora reunion on a cold, wintry morning at Delhi's Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Vajpayee said more surprises were in store for the world from a resurgent India in the economic, diplomatic, technological and other spheres. "I assure you that in the years to come, India will surprise the world even more by taking longer and bolder strides ahead," Vajpayee, fresh from a diplomatic triumph in Pakistan, said as the 3,000-strong audience, including 1,500 members of the Indian diaspora from 60 countries, repeatedly applauded him.

BERKELEY Like police predicted, South Asian community hot lines lit up Thursday after news broke that Lakireddy Bali Reddy was charged with importing minor girls from India for cheap labor and illegal sexual activity.
Reddy, 62, the owner of Pasand Madras Cuisine on Shattuck Avenue and several other commercial and residential properties in Berkeley, is scheduled for arraignment today in U.S. District Court in Oakland.
He faces charges of importing aliens for the purpose of prostitution or other immoral purposes, and of obtaining fraudulent skilled worker claims to help Indian citizens enter the United States.
On Wednesday, police asked other victims or anyone with information to step forward. And call they did.
Some said they knew someone who might be a victim, said Firoza Dabby, executive director of NARIKA, a South Asian women's organization in the East Bay that received close to a dozen calls. Others offered legal assistance. Still others, including Reddy tenants, called to relay something they had observed and to say their suspicions had been confirmed. People of all cultural backgrounds expressed shock and outrage over the news. Reddy's lawyer, Ted Cassman, and son, Vijay Lakireddy, said the charges would be proved false.

Last month, the Indian Foreign Office changed its lobbying firm, Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand, and named another public relations giant, Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer and Field as its new lobbyist in United States. The dumping of Verner had been expected for some time after the change of guard at the White House and the rise to power of the Republicans under George W Bush.
Both Verner and Akin are public relations giants, with connections going to the highest levels of the US political establishment, and that is saying something in Washington, which is one heck of an arena for contending influence peddlers and would-be power players. According to one series of statistics, some 70,000 people are employed influencing or monitoring government actions in the capital. Among themselves, this brigade of influence-peddlers mops up annually about US$8 billion, if not more. The term lobbyist includes individuals - the lone wolves - as well as those who work in lobbying for law and public relations firms.

Punjabi slugfest puts Southall in spotlight
Shyam Bhatia India Abroad Correspondent in London The roar of two Punjabi politicians slugging it out in a London constituency has overshadowed the other 54 South Asian candidates competing for seats in the forthcoming British general election. Never before has there been such Asian interest in a British parliamentary constituency as there is in the battle being fought between Labour Party standard-bearer Piara Khabra and radio station owner Avtar Lit, an independent, who claims to represent the true interests of Punjabis settled round London's Heathrow airport. The two have been at personal loggerheads ever since they announced their rival candidacies for this key constituency. "The Labour Party's view is that we don't consider the independents a serious threat at all," Khabra told

The additional 720 square metres gives a central space dedicated to temporary exhibitions as well as providing more space for the permanent collection. So wide and diverse is the culture of Asia, that the imperative was a flexible space to present a challenging range of temporary exhibitions of Asian art - contemporary and traditional. This has been achieved, and the galleries respond to all the possibilities of exhibiting - from stone sculptures seen in filtered sunlight, to fragile silks requiring soft light and shadows. Clear lines, flexible spaces and variable light ensure that all types of art can be shown to their best advantage. As well as the new Asian galleries, this major building project includes alterations to the original Asian gallery, a temporary exhibition space - the Rudy Komon gallery - above the Art Gallery entrance foyer, with views of the ornately carved Vernon arches, new conservation studios, a café, a restaurant and dedicated function area with spectacular harbour views, and refurbishment of the administration area. The New South Wales State Government provided grants of $16 million for the Art Gallery of New South Wales to undertake this major building project.
