We have collected some favourite recipes after a couple of years in Singapore, and adjusted the recipes to Norwegian taste buds as well as ingrediences that are available outside the region. But we avoid MSG and other fake taste-elements. And we use plenty of garlic. Intro to Asian Cooking
This webpage is primarily for me. I'm a neophyte (complete beginner) when it comes to cooking. The purpose is to collect information about Asian cooking, although I generally mean Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, Korean, Burmese cooking. I love Indian food, and may also make a list related to that, but Indian recipes tend to be extremely long (upwards of 8-12 spices) with heavy preparation and long cooking times. In particular, I'm interested in ingredients, how long they keep, where to get them (can it be found in a run-of-the-mill grocery stores). The ingredients can be vegetables, sauces, and/or spices. I'd also like to collect recipes. They can be authentic or fusion (i.e., somewhat Westernized versions of Asian dishes) or even Asianized version of Western dishes. In general, you can get a wider variety of Asian produce (veggies) at Asian supermarkets. However, it's easier to find Asian supermarkets in or near large cities where there are larger Asian populations. Smaller towns tend to have smaller sized stores, and they may not carry the same variety of veggies. The prices are often cheaper than regular supermarkets. (This is especially true of Indian spices in Indian grocery stores). Asian supermarkets do not usually carry Indian spices, etc. You have to go to an Indian grocery store. Most of the ones I've been to are fairly small in size. They carry a wide amount of spices, lentils (dal), and chiles, etc.

Maybe I can find some online pictures of these. I can't claim to be an expert, so some of these descriptions may be inaccurate. Bamboo shoots
  • Alternate names None that I'm aware of. (Don't know the Chinese name for bamboo shoots)
  • Description Comes from bamboo. Usually dark yellow in color. Often sold in cans. There are three common shapes. They are cut in rectangular stripes, or julienne shaped (like matchsticks) or just as shoots (which are maybe the size of a head of garlic?).
  • Availability Regular supermarkets should sell this in Asian section, though I think the variety is better at a well-stocked Asian supermarket.
  • How long it keeps Since it comes in cans (usually), I assume it keeps indefinitely until opened.
  • Used in Chinese cuisine. (Others?)
  • Comments I've used the shoots, and tend to prefer them. Bamboo shoots should be fairly common.

South Asian Cooking Tandoori Chicken Recipe serving size 8 Ingredients: Chicken 16 pieces. 1/2 cup Oil 1 tsp Cumin Powder 1 tsp Coriander Powder 1 tsp Cardamom Powder 2 tsp Chili Powder 1 tsp Paprika Powder 1/4 Cup Lemon Juice Salt according to taste Preparation: In a bowl add all the spices. Using a dry frying pan, on a very low flame, cook the spices until it start giving out a strong aroma (It should approximately take One minute). Remove the pan from the flame and add the Oil and the lemon juice. Stir into a paste and cook for 30 seconds while constantly stirring.
