Asian markets end ugly week down
Japan's exporters were feeling a pinch Friday from the stronger yen In this story: Yen hurts car companies Hong Kong down, H shares up Australia breaks streak, Korea down By Staff and wire reports HONG KONG, China - Asian stocks ended an ugly week with another down day. Japan closed narrowly down, with Hong Kong following suit. Only Australia provided a bright spot, snapping a four-day losing streak. Even the freeing up of China's B shares fizzled. Stocks in Shanghai and Shenzhen slumped after a wild day's trade. In Tokyo, stocks lost ground as a firmer yen dealt a blow to exporters, particularly automakers. That cancelled out tech gains inspired by Nasdaq's 1.3 percent gain overnight. The benchmark Nikkei average was effectively flat, down a scant 0.30 point at 13,261.84. That doesn't register in percentage terms. The broader Topix index lost 0.1 percent to 1,310.09.

Asian women speed forward on Net highway
By CNN's Kristie Lu Stout HONG KONG, China (CNN) Women now represent more than half of North America's Internet surfers, with their Asian sisters not far behind. A survey by Nielsen/NetRatings reveals that in the U.S., women now make up 52 percent of the total at-home Web population. But the Asia-Pacific region is catching up, with the number of female surfers increasing by an average 36 per cent across the region since January.
Fussier breed of surfer
"Globally we have found that women are a fussier breed of surfer than their male counterparts," Hoe Chin Fee, South Asia managing director of ACNielsen eRatings.com, said in a statement. "Women are much more efficient in their Web usage they spend less time online as they generally know what they're looking for and leave once they achieve their goal." Australian women are winning the Web race for their gender in the region, according to the industry ratings agency.

Asian markets lower on earnings fear
Japan's market failed to hold gains made last week, trading weaker on Monday HONG KONG, China Asian markets edged lower Monday on worries over earnings announcements from U.S. tech firms this week. In Tokyo, stocks dipped by midday on Monday, as investors cashed in on recent gains in high-tech shares. The benchmark Nikkei average ended the morning down 1.15 percent at 13,231.73, while the TOPIX index fell 0.48 percent to 1,292.93. Within the region, markets in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Thailand were closed. In Japan, traditional manufacturers, such as steel makers and shipbuilders, avoided the weak trend following an announcement of a merger deal between Japan's two biggest steel companies. NKK Corp and Kawasaki Steel Corp said on Friday they had agreed to set up a joint holding company in October 2002 to create Japan's top steel making group, surpassing Nippon Steel Corp on a group basis.
Gaining confidence in old manufacturers
Traders noted the latest in a series of industry reshuffles would help raise investor confidence in Japan's traditional manufacturers.

A five month travel experience through Southeast Asia including, China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar.
http://traveltales.galeon.com/
The East is calling...
In 1999 we finally made a dream come true: We packed our backpacks and went off to explore Southeast Asia for almost five months.
We had done a lot of planning and sketched a route that included Beijing, Honkong, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and -if time permitted- Burma. Sylvia had quit her job and Oliver had talked his company into unpaid holidays. We left Germany on November 3rd and
flew to Beijing . We remained two weeks
in China's capital with the exception of a
two day side trip to Xi-An. Winter had already set in and it was freezing cold. We continued to Hongkong , stayed five days and tried to find something like the magic of the place between shopping centers and construction sites. It was there that we learnt that Vietnam , our next destination was suffering from heavy floods that made travelling risky if not impossible. Fortunately the situation improved before our flight from Hongkong to Hanoi was due. Vietnam's capital captured us from the start and so did Halong Bay. We continued South by bus, but when we reached central Vietnam heavy rain set in and new the floods forced us to fly directly to Saigon. A visit to the Mekong Delta was another highlight. Cambodia had not been on our list initially, but in Saigon we were tempted by a 6 USD offer for a bus trip from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh. The border crossing itself was adventurous. In Phnom Penh the striking poverty hit us in the face and after a visit to Tuol Sleng Holocaust Museum we left the city with mixed feelings. We went to Siam Reap by speed boat on the Tonle Sap and visited the magnificent ruins of Angkor. Then we returned to Phnom Penh and caught a flight to Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand.
