Japan leads key Asian markets higher
Airline shares slipped as Middle East violence sent jet fuel prices higher HONG KONG, China Japan led most Asian markets to a higher close Tuesday, as investors chased tech shares on the back of Nasdaq's rise in the U.S. South Korea's Kospi index was the regional star, jumping 3.37 percent. But Australia and Hong Kong were the odd ones out, both pushed lower by domestic factors. In Tokyo, the benchmark Nikkei 225 average rose 1.59 percent, or 175.79 points, to 11,204.49, while the broader capital-weighted Topix index added 15.23 points or 1.45 percent to 1068.69. Petrochemical shares were mainly higher as tension in the Middle East pushed crude prices to a six-month peak in New York. Airline shares slipped on worries about fuel prices. Like South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore moved higher on tech strength.

Asian anger grows over U.S. steel tariffs
US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick said the steel tariffs were a temporary safeguard to help the U.S. industry CNN's Geoff Hiscock and wires SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) Outrage over the U.S. decision to impose tariffs on steel imports is building among Asian producers with Japan, Korea and Australia saying they will likely seek action over the move from the World Trade Organization. The European Union has already said it will seek WTO intervention. But U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick told a Washington press briefing that the EU did not come to the steel issue "with clean hands". U.S. President George W. Bush announced the tariffs of up to 30 percent late Tuesday. They will take effect from March 20 and last for three years. The key steel producers affected include Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Russia, Ukraine, Germany and Brazil, plus smaller makers like Sweden and Australia.

Asian currencies rise against slow dollar
SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) Asian currencies strengthened against the US dollar Tuesday as the greenback continued its long term decline. The yen stood at 123.60 in late afternoon trade Tuesday. The Korean won was at 1,223.3 out of Seoul. The Australian dollar hit a 20-month high at 57.5 U.S. cents Tuesday. Driving the rising Asian currencies is a continuing, slow depreciation of the US dollar against most of the floating currencies. The dollar has tumbled amid worries about a decline in fund flows into dollar assests. This was linked to uncertainty in the U.S. about earnings, corporate accounting and overseas conflicts which has caused the stock market to sink to levels not seen in months. "The mighty dollar is softening," said Andy Xie, Morgan Stanley economist in a market commentary this week.

Asian stocks start August on bullish note
Indian stocks were almost alone in losing ground, as investors fret about a flood of stock from redemptions in the largest fund By staff and wire reports HONG KONG, China Asian stocks ended the first day of August trade in a boisterous mood. Japan closed with a strong showing on good earnings and a bank tieup. But markets in Australia and Hong Kong posted even more impressive runups. South Korea had the region's largest gains, rising almost 4 percent. In Japan, the benchmark Nikkei average ended up 0.8 percent at 11,959.33.
Matsushita slips after first loss
Daiwa Bank set the positive tone, shooting up 11.6 percent to 144 yen. Daiwa, widely viewed as Japan's most troubled large bank, said it planned to consolidate operations with Kinki Osaka Bank Ltd. and Nara Bank, two regional banks. The move had been expected since mid-July, when Daiwa said it was mulling forming a super-regional bank with its partners.

Asian markets stay weaker
Sony shares tumbled, helping drag the Nikkei index down on Wednesday TOKYO, Japan Asia's biggest markets stayed weaker by midday Wednesday as their early enthusiasm over the $25 billion Hewlett-Packard merger with Compaq faded. Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand all fell, while Taiwan moved in and out of the black before contracting. Hong Kong, which made good ground Tuesday amid a regional revival, opened lower and stayed down just before midday. U.S. technology stocks fell on Wall Street Tuesday, taking the Nasdaq down 34.65 points or 1.9 percent to 1770.78. The Dow industrials rose 47.74 points to 9997.49. In Tokyo, the tech-sensitive Nikkei 225 share average dropped 196.63 points or 1.8 percent to 10,575.96. The broader TOPIX index lost 13.25 points or 1.2 percent to 1,086.88. Asian markets lower on tech dive
HSBC is down slightly in Hong Kong after posting a 20 percent profit lift Story Tools TOKYO, Japan Asian markets are mainly weaker heading into Tuesday afternoon, taking their cue from Wall Street's fall on Monday. Japan is mixed, with the Nikkei 225 down about a third of a percent and the broader Topix showing a slight gain. Japanese banks are showing good gains but leading exporters Sony and Honda are down. South Korea is the biggest decliner, with the Kospi off about 2.4 percent to 575.91 on tech stock weakness. It had been the region's biggest gainer on Monday. Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore are all in the red, but their losses are limited to less than 1 percent. New Zealand is going against the trend, with a gain of about 0.8 percent. The generally weaker trend in Asia follows the decline in U.S. markets, where the tech-heavy Nasdaq index fell 1.29 percent and the Dow Jones industrial average lost 0.67 percent on Monday. That followed a lackluster reading on U.S. manufacturing for February. ( U.S. stock roundup

Asian stocks in tight range, Japan ends down
Japan and Australia ended more or less flat, with slight losses, but markets like Hong Kong and Taiwan rose By staff and wire reports HONG KONG, China Asian stocks traded in a tight range Thursday, with Japan and Australia closing narrowly down. But Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan rose. Tech stocks got a boost from Nasdaq's overnight 1.4 percent rise, to 1,690.20. Investors were cautious, though, with earlier optimism giving way to selling in Tokyo. U.S. markets had ended mixed, the Dow Jones industrial average giving up 0.5 percent to finish at 9,075.14. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index made it five days of declines in a row for Japan. But its loss was modest, a drop of 0.2 percent to end at 10,347.28.

Asian stock gains build into afternoon trade
By staff and wire reports HONG KONG, China Asia stocks continued to surge by midday Thursday, building on Wednesday's impressive run. But they were starting to flag going into afternoon trade. In Tokyo, the benchmark Nikkei index ended the morning session up 2.49 percent at 10,980.05. The broader Topix index was up 1.57 percent at 1,063.77. But both indexes had lost about half a percent of their gains as they headed into afternoon trade. Techs again drove the rise, as they had on Wednesday. Investors are betting on the likelihood that industries like chipmaking have bottomed out and are ready to rally.
Toshiba up 4.4 percent
That thinking boosted Toshiba Corp.'s stock on Thursday morning. Japan's largest chipmaker rose 4.4 percent to 545 yen at noon. Chip-equipment maker Tokyo Electron surged 10.68 percent to 7,670 yen.
