Music and Dance of Korea
Saturday, April 17, 8 pm
Stephens Hall Theater, Towson University In collaboration with Min Xiao-Fen on Chinese pipa, and Gerry Hemingway on drum set, the highly acclaimed musician and composer Jin Hi Kim unknots the conventional patterns of Korean music to achieve an innovative style of music imbued with meditative and vivid energy. Her music on komungo and electric komungo, interwoven with the lyric expression on pipa and sound painting on drum set, evoke a rhythmic adventure from ancient to space-age blips. Following the trio, the Washington Korean Dance Company will tie the many styles of traditional dance of Korea in a performance that conbines the beauty and grace of the hand movements of classic dance with the charged rhythms of folk dance. Co-sponsored by the Korea Society.

Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst - Museum of East Asian Art
The Museum of Far Eastern Art exhibits archaeological objects and works of fine and applied art of East Asia dating from the early Stone Age to the present. The collection will again be on show to the public in April of the year 2000 which is the projected completion date of major extensions and new designs to the exhibition rooms.
The collection
In future the arts of China, Japan and Korea will be exhibited in individual galleries surrounding a central room dedicated to items of Buddhist art common to all three cultures. Chinese archaeology will be represented with important ancient bronzes, early ceramics and objects made of jade. Characteristic examples of porcelain and lacquer-work will also be on show.
A small porcelain goblet, which dates from the early 17th century and once belonged to the art collection of the Electors of Brandenburg, is of particular cultural and historical significance. The examples of lacquer-work include a 17th century imperial throne with an accompanying screen. This masterpiece, made of palisander wood with an inlay of mother-of-pearl in a lacquer and gold base, will be on display in a special room of its own.

GLOBAL: Documenta X is on. Here is the official site, and here is the discussion group put together by Universes in Universe . As they say
" Following the intentions of the artistic director of the dX, to reach a maximum of "liveliness and involvement, analysis and criticism, openness and scepticism..." during the 100 days, a topic of discussion in this Forum will be the ways in which the art from Africa, Asia and Latin America has been presented in her manifestation culturelle. It will be interesting to see if the dX can meet the challenge of becoming an interdisciplinary look into a future where traditional categories will no longer apply.

West Asian art goes back to the earliest presence of people in West Asia , in the form of little stone or clay fertility figurines. By 7000 BC , in the first little settled towns, people were making masks and big statues of people. This one is made of gypsum plaster, with tar eyes, and although it isn't life-size, it is about three feet tall. At around the same time, people first started to make pottery out of clay. These pots are not among the first ones made in Western Asia (which is the earliest pottery made anywhere), but they were made in the Stone Age . You can see that it didn't take long before people were decorating the pots in beautiful and complicated ways. These helped to show what culture you belonged to.

The DAM’s department of was formed in 1990 and opened its first permanent galleries in 1993. Changing exhibitions drawn from our rich collection of fine and decorative arts are displayed on the seventh and second floors. On the seventh floor, you’ll find pre-1900 European and American decorative arts. The twentieth-century design galleries on the second floor present modern design from the collection, along with changing exhibitions of architecture, design, and graphics.
The Asian art
collection, the only such resource in the entire Rocky Mountain region, reflects the diverse creative concepts of a vast and complex area. Four main galleries on the fifth floor are devoted to the arts of India, China, Japan, and Southwest Asia. Other galleries offer works from Tibet, Nepal, and Southeast Asia, as well as fine collections of religious art and traditional folk crafts.
The Modern and Contemporary collection of 20th-century art contains over 4,500 works, with an emphasis on both internationally known and emerging artists. Changing selections from our preeminent collection of 19th-century landscape photographs are displayed on the seventh floor, while the Merage Gallery on the seventh floor features three to four exhibitions a year from the Museum's rapidly growing collection of 20th-century photography. The Vance Kirkland Close Range Gallery on the first floor showcases the work of artists who live or work on projects in the Rocky Mountain area, as well as work from around the world that is rarely seen in Colorado. The department also includes more than 2,500 works in the Herbert Bayer Collection and Archive, an important Bauhaus artistic and scholarly resource.

The Asian Cultural Council supports cultural exchange between Asia and the United States in the performing and visual arts, primarily by providing individual fellowship grants to artists, scholars, students, and specialists from Asia for study, research, travel and creative work in the United States. Some grants are also awarded to Americans engaged in similar activities in Asia and to arts organizations and educational institutions for specific projects of particular significance to Asian-American cultural exchange. In addition, the Council awards a small number of grants in support of regional exchange activities within Asia. Grants are made in the following fields: archaeology, architecture (design, theory, and history), art history, art and architectural conservation, crafts, dance, film, museology, music, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, theater, and video.
ACC Fellowships and Projects
Many of the Asian Cultural Council's fellowships are awarded with unrestricted grant funds, primarily to support artists and specialists from Asia pursuing research, training, and creative programs in the United States. In 2002, unrestricted funds provided support for thirty-five individual fellowships and twenty project grants.
