Asian Art Although the Nelson-Atkins has prestigious collections of European and American art, it is known above all for its magnificent collection of Asian art. The collection is considered one of the finest in the Western world for its scope, depth and consistently high quality. It includes art from China, Japan, Iran, Indonesia, Korea, India and other countries.
The Chinese collection comprises masterpieces from every phase of Chinese art. The bronze age (1200 B.C. to 500 B.C.) is especially well represented in a series of ceremonial vessels and weapons.
Fisherman's Evening Song , the greatest Northern Song landscape handscroll to have survived.
Other Chinese holdings include the fine collection of Ming dynasty (A.D. 1368-1644) furniture, virtually unrivaled outside China; Buddhist sculpture and wall paintings; and an outstanding collection of ceramic ware spanning three thousand years.

Celestial Female Undressed by a Monkey is equally remarkable for the later period of sculpture.
The collection is especially strong in South Indian Hindu bronzes, among them such celebrated and unique pieces as the Karaikkalammaiyar and Sambandar , both Shaiva Saints, and the Tree of Life . The Museum also owns a large collection of lavishly colored Indian miniature paintings from both Rajput and Mughal schools, as well as Persian miniature paintings.
Southeast Asia is represented by several outstanding free-standing sculptures and reliefs, such as the Standing Buddha from Chieng Mai, Thailand, and the fragment from an elaborate lintel depicting the god Indra.

Copper alloy with pigment
15 1/2 x 6 3/4 x 4 in. (39.4 x 17.2 x 10.2 cm) Gift of the Michael J. Connell Foundation, M.70.17 This sculpture was probably made in northern India and was influenced by Mathura and Sarnath styles. The image, long preserved in a Tibetan monastery, received there the dark indigo paint on its locks. The striated, schematic folds of the robe were common to Mathura figures, while its transparency as well as the delicate proportions of face and body and the slight weight shift to the right leg are reminiscent of Sarnath sculpture. http://www.artsmia.org/collection/asian/index.cfm
The Institute’s collection of Asian art represents 17 Asian cultures spanning nearly 5,000 years. The Department of Asian Arts has benefited greatly from generous gifts from knowledgeable collectors. Augustus L. Searle, Alfred F. Pillsbury, Richard P. Gale, Louis W. Hill, Jr., and Ruth and Bruce Dayton have donated specialized collections of international reputation, including ancient Chinese bronzes, ancient and post-Sung jade, Chinese monochrome ceramics, Ukiyo-e paintings, Japanese prints, and classical Chinese furniture. In addition, highly regarded specialized collections of Ch’ing dynasty silk textiles, Miao textiles, and surimono prints have been built over the years. The Department’s goal is to provide the public with a broad overview of Asian art. In 1998 the museum presented the Indian, Islamic, Himalayan, Southeast Asian, and Korean permanent collections. An original reception hall from the late Ming dynasty and an 18th-century Suchou-area library are now in place. The renowned collections of 17th- and 18th-century Chinese furniture, literati objects, and paintings have been acquired through the extraordinary generosity of Ruth and Bruce Dayton. While building these focused collections, the Daytons have strategically added important gifts of sculpture, ceramics, bronzes, gold, calligraphy, and Nanga painting.

The great interest aroused in things "Oriental" by the displays at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876 led to some of the first purchases for the newly established Museum: lacquerware, furniture, ceramics and other decorative arts from the Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Moroccan, and Persian exhibitors. The Centennial also provided a second group of Japanese ceramics through a later bequest of General Hector Tyndale, one of the jurors at the exhibition and a manufacturer of porcelain in Philadelphia. These early holdings of Asian art were supplemented by important Chinese ceramics given by Mrs. Bloomfield Moore in the late nineteenth century.
