To hitch your career to the hottest growth fields of the next decade, look into these majors.
by Lance Fujieki
"No other majors will put you on the inside track for as many perennially lucrative careers in virtually every growth fields." eems like everyone starts college as a pre-med, pre-law or pre-MBA. Booooring! Also not very smart, judging by all the med-school dropouts backpacking in the Honduras, lawyers selling shoes and MBAs doing phone sales. Part of the problem is that parents and college-bound kids are clueless when it comes to what will pull in the big bucks in the years to come while letting you have a life in your prime. The following list will get you started exploring the smartest alternatives to the doctor-lawyer-indian chief scenario.
1. Mathematics/Statistics
No other majors will put you on the inside track for as many perennially lucrative careers in virtually every growth fields. Investment analyst, cryptologist, market research analyst, computer programmer, budget analyst and information scientist are just a few of the dozens of math careers perpetually begging for qualified applicants, especially those with a native proficiency in English. The demand is expected to grow well past the coming decade.

A History of Asian American Studies at Duke University (Spring 2002 - present) In April 2002, undergraduate students at Duke collaborated with graduate students, faculty members, and administrators to engage the larger Duke community in the discussion for Asian American Studies (AAS). The effort started from the students in the Asian American Studies Undergraduate Working Group and ultimately stemmed out to a range of people in the Durham community as well as the national community:
April 8, 2002: Asian American Studies Teach-In Students in Visiting Professor Seung Hye Suh's "Asian American Literature and Culture" class organize a teach-in. Around 100 people attend.
April 10, 2002: Students and supporting faculty meet with the Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Dean of Trinity College, and Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences to submit a proposal for an AAS department.
A national call for letters of support is made, and over 1,000 petition signatures in support of Asian American Studies at Duke are collected.

Introduction
Extension family consumer scientists and other family specialists are at a crossroads in serving rural populations. The rural cultural tapestry continues to be redefined as the country begins a new millennium. As populations continue to shift from rural and urban to suburban areas, Extension family consumer scientists and other family specialists are faced with developing appropriate practices in serving the new faces of rural America (Fluharty, 2001). In particular, the Asian American (Wheelan, 2001) and Latino (Kohoe, 2001) populations have burgeoned over the last 10 years as the first and second fastest growing populations in the country. This article discusses a working paradigm that illustrates how Extension family consumer scientists and other family specialists can work collectively with rural Asian American and Latino families to promote family and community life. When providing services to rural Asian American and Latino populations, it is important for Extension professionals and other family specialists to take an ecological and historical perspective. Asian American and Latino historical experiences and challenges can serve as a map to establishing culturally sensitive approaches, while providing effective outreach. Key lessons include the following.

74. What Is Asian American Studies?
Asian American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that is primarily drawnfrom and contributes to the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts.
http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~rle/
What is Asian American Studies? Asian American Studies as a formal course of study in American colleges and universities was initiated some three decades ago to recover, document, analyze, and reconstruct the history, lived experiences, cultures, identities, and contributions of peoples of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in the United States from the perspectives of Asian and Pacific Americans. Asian and Pacific Americans are persons who call the United States their home and trace their ancestry to countries from the Asian continent and subcontinent and islands within the Pacific Rim. In referring to persons and groups, Asian Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, Asian and Pacific Islanders, and Asian and Pacific Americans are used interchangeably in research literature. Asian American Studies is the common usage for courses of study in higher education institutions covering these groups. Asian American Studies also draws upon and advances theoretical perspectives and methodologies in ethnic, feminist, and cultural studies. As part of the "new" scholarship, Asian American Studies extends standpoint theory and theories of the social construction of knowledge, including critical race theory, critical race feminism, and cultural and literary critiques. From a historical perspective, for example, it views Asian Americans as subjects of history, not objects, and as active agents in the creation of community and nation. In its application of oral histories, community studies, ethnographic studies, and other methodological approaches, Asian American Studies broadens conceptions of race and racial/ethnic relations in the development of the United States. From a literary and cultural studies perspective, it analyzes the Asian American voice and standpoint in imposed and self-representations in American cultural productions.
