The bottom line of each table shows the percentage of each minority racial/ethnic group that received master’s, doctoral and first professional degrees, respectively. For example, African Americans were awarded 7.7 percent of all master’s degrees, 5.1 percent of all doctoral degrees and 6.8 percent of all first professional degrees. The rows of each table show the percentages conferred to each minority group for the specific fields of study. Cells are highlighted in green if the racial/ethnic group earns a disproportionately high proportion relative to the grand total (i.e., 25 percent more than grand total percentage). Similarly, cells highlighted in red indicate where the racial/ethnic group receives proportionately fewer degrees (25 percent less than the grand total percentage).
For master’s degrees, African Americans, Hispanics and American Indians earn relatively high proportions of degrees in public administration and service disciplines (including public administration; protective services; and parks, recreation and leisure studies). The same three groups earn a relatively low percentage of master’s degrees in engineering and technology. Asian Americans, on the other hand, earn a disproportionately higher percentage of degrees in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), but earn proportionately few degrees in education and the public administration and service disciplines.

page: Manalansan reported that gay Filipino-American men in New York do not identify as Asian or even Pacific Islander. He sees little likelihood of pan-ethnicity becoming salient. Filipinos who are socialized into gay culture in the United States tend to reject idioms of effeminacy (traditional, gender-stratified homosexuality) as archaic and/or lower class, while those whose early homosexual experience was in the Philippines tend to retain it He also found class and language differences to be less salient to gay Filipinos in the United States than in the Philippines. Carrier, Nguyen, and Su located Vietnamese gay networks in Southern California and learned something about Vietnamese men who have sex with men but are not integrated into those social and sexual networks. University Evaluates Proposal For Asian-American Studies EVANSTON, Ill. - The proposal for an Asian American Studies Program at Northwestern University made by the Asian American Advisory Board (AAAB) and submitted to University President Henry S. Bienen and Dean Lawrence B. Dumas is under consideration and will be evaluated through normal channels for curricular development in the College of Arts and Sciences. Bienen, who responded to the proposal in a Feb. 14 letter to Robert A. Yap, president of the Asian American Advisory Board, said that [we] "start with the assumption that any new program we initiate at Northwestern ought to be done well and be excellent in content." He said that as the AAAB proposal says, "an Asian American Studies Program ought to build on, and add to, strengths that we have in history, political science, sociology, anthropology" and, he said, he would add "law, economics, journalism, education, the performing arts and other subjects and schools." Bienen said that "the evaluation of the intellectual content, coherence and staffing of a new program remains in the school where a program would be lodged." He said that responsibility for the proper evaluation of an Asian American Studies Program would rest with the College of Arts and Sciences, "although other schools could be involved" in the process.

    Asian American Studies
Published: Monday, January 5, 2004 An Open Letter to OSU President Karen A. Holbrook and Interim Provost Barbara R. Snyder
Asian American Studies is in a state of crisis at The Ohio State University. Within the past two years, OSU has lost eight faculty members who have scholarly expertise and have taught courses in Asian American Studies. We lost four of them to other institutions that recruited and provided more lucrative positions; two did not receive support from their departments and failed to receive tenure, and two retired after numerous years at OSU.
As OSU undergraduate and graduate students who actively engage in Asian American scholarship, research and advocacy, we are deeply concerned about the invisibility of Asian American Studies faculty, not to mention the lack of courses that address the narratives and experiences of diasporic peoples of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in the United States and in the Americas.
In comparison to other Big Ten institutions, OSU lags behind in the number of professors, courses and research productivity in Asian American Studies. While OSU only has two tenure-track faculty members (in History and Comparative Studies) who have extensive training in Asian American Studies, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has 17 professors and two postdoctoral fellows. The University of Wisconsin at Madison has 10 faculty members, and the University of Michigan has eight professors and two postdoctoral fellows in Asian American Studies.
