    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, February 12, 2003 CONTACT: Vincent A. Eng Local and National Asian American Organizations Join Together to Address Barriers to Legal Services for Immigrants "Given the success of our hotline in helping to create access to legal services for mono-lingual Asian Americans, we wanted to offer immigrant communities in other parts of the country a practical guide for setting up a similar program in their cities," stated Jayne Park, Executive Director of APALRC. The handbook presents ten practical steps to guide any organization in developing its own legal referral hotline. The model and handbook were developed in response to specific findings made by NAPALC in its 2000 report entitled The Search for Equal Access to Justice: Asian American Access to Justice Project. Among the key findings were that in many parts of the country, Asian Americans lacked meaningful access to legal services because of language and cultural barriers. One of the report's recommendations was to develop a local "demonstration" project where there was a growing Asian American population, which could then serve as a model for serving the legal needs of Asian Americans in other parts of the country.

Radical Resistance in Conservative Times: New Asian American Organizations in the 1990s
By Diane C. Fujino and Kye Leung
    Part 1 of 16
Thirty years after the emergence of the Asian American Movement, new Asian American formations continue to expand the struggle. However, like other US-based social movements, the Asian American Movement today is qualitatively different than in the 1960s and 70s. The political-economic landscape of the 1990s is much more conservative. Economic restructuring, the rise in conservatism including Asian American neo-conservatives, and FBI and police repression past and present have left the radical movements in a weakened condition. Within the Asian American Movement, we witnessed the dissolution in the late 1980s and early 1990s of revolutionary formations with substantial Asian membership such as the League of Revolutionary Struggle. Yet radical Asian American organizing continues, primarily among the youth. And it is our contention that early 1998 marked the beginning of a qualitative upsurge in the Movement.
    Background on New Radical Organizations
This chapter examines five radical Asian American organizations: API FORCE , ASIAN!, ACTION, the Asian Left Forum, and the Asian Revolutionary Circle. The assessment of these groups is based on interviews with members, published documents, internal papers, informal conversations with activists. and our direct participation in some of these groups and in the Asian American Movement.

Within the collection are over 1,000 printed materials, including books, journals, newspapers, magazines, reports of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Reports, and U.S. Census Reports concerning Asian Americans and people of color. Newsletters from a multitude of grassroots and community Asian American organizations are available in the Center as well. Back to top Journal Articles and Magazine/Newspaper Clippings The Center provides individual articles on various Asian American topics such as Asian Americans and aging, Japanese American internment, and Bilingual Education. Dating Go to the early 1970s, relevant clippings from mainstream and progressive national newspapers and magazines, in addition to a compilation of Oberlin articles on the Asian American and Third World student communities, are contained in the Center.
