Book Review: Asian American Dreams
By Herb Boyd
National Editor, TBWT
Book Review: Asian American Dreams—The Emergence of An American People, by Helen Zia, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, 2000, $26.00, 356pp
A federal district judge recently released Wen Ho Lee, the Chinese scientist who had been held for eight months on charges that he improperly downloaded some of the country’s most sensitive nuclear secrets. The judge decided to release Lee on bail, citing the scientist was not a risk to flee. He also inferred that the material he downloaded was not so top secret, though he stopped short of suggesting Lee was targeted because of his ethnicity. The federal judge and the prosecutors may not have viewed Lee’s Chinese ancestry as part of the accusations brought against him, but author Helen Zia minces no words in her assertions that Lee was “scapegoated and accused of the high crime of espionage because of his ethnicity.” Although Lee’s predicament emerges too late to receive a full discussion from Zia in her thoroughly engaging book, the author provides ample historical and contemporary evidence of racism perpetrated against Chinese and other Asian minorities.

Funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the study is the first ever to detail the mental health problems and needs of this particularly vulnerable ethnic community. Based on its findings, the Federation is calling on federal, state, and local policymakers and private funders to expand the availability of mental health services to Asian Americans, ensure that those services are culturally appropriate, and begin planning responses to future disasters that may increase the need for mental health services.

    78. Discrimination Against Asian Americans
During the internment, most people lost their residences, businesses, and anythingelse the poverty line, the lowest poverty levels for any Asian American group
    http://faculty.ncwc.edu/toconnor/soc/355lect10.htm
UNDERSTANDING DISCRIMINATION AGAINST ASIAN-AMERICANS Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders number about 9 million in the U.S., constituting about 3% of the U.S. population, mostly residing in California, New York, or the racial paradise of Hawaii. They make up about 65% of the world population. They have been stereotyped as the "model minority" because the substantial majority are college-educated with middle- or upper-income occupations, but others, an estimated 12%, are employed in low-paying service jobs or sweatshops. An Asian American is one and a half times more likely to have a bachelor's degree than a white non-Latino, and Asian-Americans, in general, have average or above-average income levels (an estimated 30% higher than whites, according to some figures). Asian American immigrant history is essentially labor history. Chinese immigration began in 1850-1880 from the Fukien and Kwangtung provinces to provide cheap labor on the nation's railway system and feed the American gold rush frenzy. These were turbulent times, and the U.S. had a crisis called the "yellow peril", a 19th Century belief that Asians constituted a threat to Western civilization. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 brought a halt to almost all Chinese immigration until about 1943, when Chinese workers were brought in to contribute to the U.S. War effort in the nation's defense plants. Other Chinese Americans opened laundries, stores, and restaurants where they initially did business primarily with each other. Recent waves of Chinese immigrants have included scientists, students, asylees, and parolees. Like immigrants from

    By Claire Huang Kinsley
Excerpted from Miscegenation Blues: Voices of Mixed Race Women (Carol Camper, ed.)
To start with, I don’t know what I look like. I’m not complaining. There are plenty of worse fates. But still, how odd – to look at yourself in the mirror, to see the face you know best of any face in the world, and to ask yourself, “What do I look like?” and to not really know.
Question #1. What do I look like?
“You don’t look very Chinese.” “You don’t look Chinese at all.”
“Your mother’s Chinese? Really?” “Well, now that you mention it, I can sort of see it…” “Are you Vietnamese? Chinese?” “I thought maybe you were part Inuit.” “Are you the young lady with the Oriental features and the very nice haircut?” “You don’t look Chinese. You look Canadian.” “Interestante… tipo chino, pero con pecas.” “I can kind of tell, but only because of your eyes.” “You have Chinese hair.” “I want to speak to the staffperson I saw last time. I think maybe she was Filipino or something.” “You don’t look Asian at all.”

Date: Dec. 12, 1998 BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS:
Born: Oct. 27, 1940 in Stockton, CA.
Education: Bachelor’s of arts from University of California at Berkeley in 1962. SELECTED WORKS: The Woman Warrior, China Men, Tripmaster Monkey: His Fake Book. AFFILIATIONS: The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Asian-Pacific Women’s Network, California Council for Humanities, etc. ACCOLADES: National Book Critics Circle Award for The Woman Warrior and China Men, the National Education Association Award (1977), the Anisfield-Wolf Race Relations Award ( 1978), Stockton Arts Commission Award (1981), National Book Award, runner-up to the Pulitzer Prize (1988), Lila Wallace Readers Digest Award (1992), and various other awards and honorary doctoral degrees. ANALYSIS:
The term Asian American acknowledges the collective experiences and various perspectives of this group, according to David Mura in his article, “The State of Asian America.” Mura, a Japanese American writer, says that the difference between the traditional mainstream art model and the Asian American Renaissance prototype is that one attempts to “explain” art to a “uniformed” audience where as the latter recognizes that the audience creates the art. Therefore, Asian American artists do not “explain” their art because it is conceived by what Mura calls, “a constant dialogue with each other.” Through this dialogue, he says, Asian Americans are able to give a voice to its people.
