What are Asian American dreams? When I first see the title of the book by Helen, the question comes to me. I have to think about this really hard, but it seems I don't have an answer for it. This is probably something we don't pay much attention to in our daily lives. Helen has done a great job in exploring this topic in her book from many aspects, such as the history of Asian American cultures and her personal experience as a journalist. The book is invaluable not only for Asian Americans, but also for all people who want to know and understand Asian Americans. Guide: You have a lot of discussions about races and cultures in your book. And we know one of the biggest challenges for American is how to handle problems among different races and cultures. This may become the most important issue as the population of minorities grows. What is your view about this and what is the best way to prevent any problems that may happen in the future?

"WHY AND HOW ASIAN AMERICAN WOMEN SHOULD DEAL WITH BREAST CANCER"
    WHAT:
An educational luncheon for Asian American women sponsored by the Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research and Training (AANCART) and UC Davis Cancer Center. WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 10
    11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. WHERE: Camellia Cottage lawn
Across parking lot 3 from UC Davis Cancer Center, 4501 X Street, Sacramento
(Parking in lot 3 is free for vehicles displaying press credentials on left dashboard.) WHY: Cancer has been the number one killer of Asian American women since 1980, yet Asian American women continue to have the lowest breast cancer screening rates of any ethnic group. Adding to the problem, health-care professionals sometimes minimize the cancer risks of Asian American women. WHO: Helen Chew, director of the breast cancer program at UC Davis Cancer Center, will talk about cancer risks and recommendations for Asian American women. Susan Shinagawa, AANCART community director, will discuss her experience with breast cancer, startingwith the doctor who refused to biopsy her breast lump because "Asian women don't get breast cancer." Thus, the fact that in mainstream media, Asian American women are more frequently paired with white men than Asian American men are paired with any women
    http://democracyweb.com/asian/media/interrac.htm
Media portrayals of interracial couples reflect the historical experience of Asian Americans in this respect: mainstream American society accepted Asian feminine sexuality more than a century before it accepted Asian American social and political equality. Thus, the fact that in mainstream media, Asian American women are more frequently paired with white men than Asian American men are paired with any women, ethnic Asian or otherwise, primarily reflects the dominant media power of white men, which is not necessarily sympathetic to social progress for Asian Americans. A longer essay elaborating the asymmetric media representation of Asian American women and men is cached here from the Pomona College website.
The Joy Luck Club , perhaps the most successful film to feature a predominantly Asian-American cast, has been widely criticized for its negative portrayals of Asian men. As in Amy Tan's book, interracial relationships with white men are invoked as a metaphor for assimilation into American culture. The disparate treatment of the otherwise coordinate experience of Asian-American women and men serves to emasculate Asian American men by misrepresenting their attitudes towards women as un-American and uniformly chauvinistic and misogynistic. In sharp contrast to the mainstream media's full acceptance of white male-Asian female couples, the popular movie

While most agree that interacting with the news media on campus and in the community can be a highly effective strategy to communicate the benefits of diversity, few resources provide ways to integrate media assignments into diversity courses. Hence, students fail to learn ways to articulate issues of diversity to the media. Here is an example of how to generate media stories through course assignments. Creating the Story Line The initial task is for a team of students to agree on an important issue, idea, or question related to Asian American communities in the DC Metro Area, and then (re)present it for the class to see/hear/ understand/appreciate. To begin generating stories, Teraguchi asks students to write down five emotions. He then poses a series questions for students to contemplate. Questions include: Which emotions do you want to portray in your story? What emotions do you want to draw on to engage your audience?
