The Real Asian American Journalists
by Emil Guillermo I Chronicle struggled to come up with "Model minority image is a hurdle; Asian Americans feel left out of the mainstream.” N The event drew hardly any local community members, and less than a third of the conventioneers bothered to come, a paltry showing for what was billed as the major substantive exchange on media and Asian Americans. W The New York Times' T It was so frustrating that even before prompting by the moderator, I was at the public microphone, ready to go after them. N o Asian voices? Are they kidding? What are we in the ethnic media? Chopped bitter melon? T he fact is the ethnic media has been there all along. While the mainstream has done its best to put Asian Americans in a media void, the ethnic media, both in-language and in English, has been there with a view from the community.

NATIONAL ASIAN AMERICAN TELECOMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATION The mission of the National Asian American Telecommunications Association (NAATA) is "to advance the ideals of cultural pluralism in America and to promote better understanding of the Asian Pacific American experience through film, video and radio." Since its founding in 1980, NAATA has been bringing award-winning programs by and about Asian Pacific Americans to the public through such venues as national and local television broadcasting, film and video screenings, and educational distribution services. NAATA works primarily in three programming areas: television broadcast, exhibition (namely, the annual San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival), and non-broadcast distribution, (more specifically, through their CrossCurrent Media catalogue). Through this effort, the organization seeks to support and nurture Asian Pacific American media artists in order to proffer a more accurate representation of Asian Pacific communities to the public. The representation of Asian Americans in American television and film, supporters of the group feel, has led to many false perceptions of them. In the 1995 Catalogue of the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, Stephen Gong (film history scholar and manager of the Pacific Film Archive) argues that the struggles in the career of silent film star, Sessue Hayakawa remain emblematic of the price Asian/American actors pay in order to get some screen time. Referring to the stereotypes of Asian Americans, he asks: "Do the commercial constraints that have apparently governed mass media from its earliest days still make it a given that public expectations must be fulfilled before artistic vision can be exercised?" NAATA attempts to respond to this question by presentingand more importantly, integratingalternative and self-proclaimed representation by "marginal" peoples into the mainstream media culture.

BECOMING A DIRECTOR
I stumbled into filmmaking after graduating from college. I was living in Korea for a couple of years and I got involved with a support center for Korean women who were working as prostitutes for American GI's near the Demilitarized Zone. I originally wanted to do some kind of oral history project about the women because my background in college was history and journalism and because I wanted to help let other people hear these stories. I had never used a video camera before. I met filmmaker Diana Lee and then PhD student, Kathy Moon, who were both interested in the topic, and we decided to pool our resources and make the documentary CAMP ARIRANG, which is about militarized prostitution in South Korea. When I came back to the States, I just started trying to get more experience, getting production work, working on various documentaries as a researcher or assistant. I worked for a television show as a post-production assistant and got involved in a production workshop at Third World Newsreel in New York. I was getting my feet wet, while simultaneously trying to co-produce a documentary. I was making a film, but I had so much to learn about the whole process. I had always been interested in writing my own stories and working with actors. I decided to go back to film school and focus on that aspect, and that's what I've done ever since. I'm currently working on a feature script that I plan to direct, but in the meantime, I continue to make documentaries because I just love the process. There are just so many stories and characters out there - the ones you could never recreate in a fiction form because the originals are so much more interesting.

Ethnic Media Grows Up
by Hua Hsu Will increasing mainstream attention alter the ethnic media landscape? It has become the habit of ethnic press to host the pesky, difficult, and ultimately unpopular questions that would likely invite censure were they voiced in the mainstream.
ethnic markets Serve the People After my first year of college, I spent the summer interning at a local Asian American weekly in San Francisco. Staying afloat on a shoestring budget and the earnest goodwill of its core staffers, the paper skimmed along with a consistent mix of neighborhood news and national politics. I remember one day the managing editor (who happened to be white) was arguing with one of the section editors about the grave discrepancy in their respective salaries, concluding that the lower-paid Chinese American should relish the chance to serve his community. I believe "psychic salary" is what he termed this intangible bonus. "This heightened interest in the ethnic media market has nothing to do with equal rights or civil rights. It has to do with the bottom line."

About Asian Media Access Asian Media Access is a non-profit organization dedicated to using media arts as tools for social betterment. Centrally located on the Minneapolis campus of Metropolitan State University, AMA is one of only five national media organizations devoted to serving Asian American media needs. Our continuing mission is to Connect the Disconnected: we want to challenge the traditional isolation of Asian American communities by helping Asian Americans realize that the media can be an effective and important tool for communication and education. The media can be important means of preventing social illness. We can use it to identify potential community problems, and to arrive at participatory solutions. Yet, because of cost and technology, the media often remains inaccessible to a large number of citizens, especially to minorities. "Media Access" refers to various educational workshops and practices which enable participation and understanding of media by under-served populations. Through democratization of media access, we can increase tolerance and understanding among all ethnic groups. In this spirit, Asian Media Access provide programs and services in three areas:

Asian American Production Studio Promoting Asian American Participation in the Media Having outgrown the facilities at local cable access stations, Asian Media Access is looking forward to expanding its production and training programs by establishing an Asian Production Studio in the Twin Cities. Various sites are already under consideration for this studio which will allow Asian Media Access to develop Asian language news programs, ESL classes, documentaries, talk shows and other educational programs specifically designed to meet the media needs of Asian Americans. Equipped with full production control and studio equipment, a portable digital camera package, and an editing system, the Studio will serve as a media training center for Asian American youths and will provide important production opportunities to Asian American film and video professionals. With high quality, non-commercial programming, the Studio will foster the growth and development of Asian American expression in the media and will contribute to an open, diverse environment in the Twin Cities.
