Orientals: Asian Americans in Popular Culture (Asian American History and Culture Series) > Customer Review #2: Identity and Association

This text is an interesting overview to the constant redefinition that society has in creating and labeling the term "Asian". I do not believe that the author chose to title the book "Orientals" as a derogatory term, rather as a word that has been misconstrued within western ideology. The title itself brings attention to the constant shift and misrepresentation of Asians within Westernized culture. Being Asian American alone is no longer enough it seems within society. Most individuals currently label themselves as Filipino-American, Vietnamese-American, Korean-American, Indian-American, etc. The whole notion of how a large group such as Asians identify themselves nowadays is too large, and complicated of a subject to discuss in a literary commentary such as this one. I do admit that word "Orient" is a term that has been used to label goods and products; it is a term that misrepresented whole nations of people. But one has to remember too that its origins derive from a period and society that considered people of color, and foreign locals as "goods" rather than people or individuals.

Hmong Means Free: Life Laos and America (Asian American History and Culture) > Customer Review #1: Hmong History

The stories in this book were true story for the Hmong. If you didnt know who are Hmong and where they came from. You better read this book. It is every a good book. After you read this book, you also get information from Hmong culture. The book talked about Hmong history from China, joined with CIA when the Vietnam War, how hard their lives and also how hard they had moved from country to country. The book also included story by each person. After I read the stories in this book, I felt very interesting and enjoying with. Hmong Means Free, because Hmong was a group that didnt like to live by law control. For me, I understand that Hmong had joined the law when general Vang Pao become a Hmong leader. He was the first one that forced the Hmong to join with the law and had education with other foreign people.

Asian American Activism Thwarts Racist "Kung Fool" Costume
On Thursday, October 10, 2002, Yellowworld.org launched Project Anti-Disguise , a grass-roots campaign to raise awareness about the racist, anti-Asian costume "Kung Fool." A petition was immediately circulated to offer a mechanism by which the frustration, anger and firm resolution of the Asian community could constructively be channeled. With the generous support of the Organization of Chinese Ameicans, San Diego, Project Anti-Disguise launched a blitzkrieg-style media assault, voicing its message in television, radio, print and online coverage. Eight days and over 8,300 signatures later, Disguise the largest costume manufacturer in the world has gotten the message. "Disguise, Inc. will take steps to ensure these costumes will not be sold and sent an additional letter to retailers today requesting that they remove all 'Kung Fool' costumes from their shelves by October 18, 2002," affirmed Disguise EVP Stephen C. Stanley

Special to AsianWeek so Flower Drum Song cheongsam Flower Drum Song could have used a little editing. But the movie also seems to sprawl inadvertently because of its very subject matter. The range of APA experience seems to surge out beyond the limits of the one-hour-long movie format. The World of Suzy Wong Flower Drum Song was her second film. Since Flower Drum Song, Kwan, who says she was born around 1939, has assumed a host of roles, in films such as Drop Dead Darling and Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story
