    Eritrea
    History
Eritrea formed part of the ancient Ethiopian kingdom of Aksum until the 7th cent. Thereafter Ethiopian emperors maintained an intermittent presence in the area until the mid-16th cent., when the Ottoman Empire gained control of much of the coastal region. Beginning in the mid-19th cent. Ethiopia struggled against Egypt and Italy for control of Eritrea. In the 1880s, Italy occupied the coastal areas around Aseb and Massawa, and by 1890 had extended its territory enough to proclaim the colony of Eritrea (named after the Roman term for the Red Sea, Mare erythraeum Ethiopia In World War II, Eritrea was captured (1941) by the British. Ethiopia had long demanded control of Eritrea on the ground of ethnic affinity, but Britain occupied Eritrea after the war and, beginning in 1949, administered it as a UN trust territory. In 1950 the United Nations decided that Eritrea was to be made independent as a federated part of Ethiopia, and in late 1952 this decision became effective. In late 1962 the Eritrean assembly voted to end the federal status and to unify Eritrea with Ethiopia. After 1962, Eritreans who opposed union carried on sporadic guerrilla warfare against Ethiopia and the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) was founded. In 1972 a rival insurgent group, the Eritrean Popular Liberation Forces (EPLF), was formed and battled the ELF for supremacy.

The Asian American Mosaic
APAs emerge as a leading force on many fronts By Alethea Yip One of the most visible additions to the American mosaic in recent years has been the startling growth of the Asian Pacific American piece. Since 1980, the APA population has nearly doubled, from 3.7 million to 7.3 million, making APAs more than 3 percent of the U.S. population. The group is projected to reach more than 40 million by the year 2050, which would make up about 8 percent of the population. The term Asian Pacific American itself has broadened to include more than 50 different ethnic groups from throughout Asia, the Pacific Rim, and the Pacific Islands. The inclusion of such diverse groups into one category was originally intended to facilitate census data gathering, but the label "Asian Pacific American" has largely evolved into a political identity. The first Asians to come to America in large numbers were the Chinese laborers who helped to build the transcontinental railroad and who came to mine the gold in the hills of the Western United States in the mid-1800s. Thousands of the Chinese sojourners ventured to make their fortune in what they called Gum Saan, or Gold Mountain. Dreams of riches and a better life began to fade as the laborers discovered that, as a community, they were scapegoated for the economic ills of the country during the depression in the 1800s. Fingers pointed to the Chinese, and anti-Chinese campaigns were launched. The oftentimes violent anti-Chinese sentiment prevailed throughout the country, despite the fact that Chinese Americans during that time made up less than half of one percent of the population.

29. AALDEF: Voting Rights
could not be verified through government databases. This proposed legislation was only targeted for five the states with the highest Asian American populations
http://www.aaldef.org/voting.html
The ability to have a say in the workings of government, either as an elected official or as a voter, is a powerful empowerment tool. Asian Americans are the fastest growing ethnic population in the United States, yet the community's political strength has yet to be fully realized. There have been some major victories, such as Gary Locke's election as governor of Washington and David Wu's election to Congress from Oregon, and Asian American representation at the state and local levels continues to grow in California. Asian American civic participation continues to lag far behind the community's population growth, however, and voter registration rates are woefully low. In New York, which boasts the nation's second largest Asian American population at more than 800,000, there never was an Asian American elected to city-wide, state-wide or national office until John Liu's election to the City Council in 2001. This is a startling and perilous fact. The stereotype of Asian Americans as a model minority has obscured the continuing barriers that prevent Asian Americans from participating effectively as candidates or as voters. Barriers to Political Participation Throughout United States history, Asian Americans have been disenfranchised by discriminatory laws that denied citizenship to Asian immigrants and rendered them ineligible to vote. It was not until 1943 that Chinese Americans were first permitted to become citizens. For Asian Indians, it was 1946. For Japanese Americans and other Asian Americans, that right did not come until 1952. The legacy of these discriminatory policies and the notion of Asian Americans as foreigners is still strongly felt today, impeding Asian American political participation.

I. INTRODUCTION
One story of Washington state is a story of immigration, but it is not the simple tale of assimilation or acculturation. Immigrants brought pieces of culture from their native lands to Washington state, where they melded them with pieces taken from American culture. Immigrants did not remain unchanged or melt into a common society, however. Instead, Washington is a mosaic made of different peoples coming together to create new lives in a new land. The Asian American experience is part of this mosaic. Thedocuments that accompany this essay demonstrate how Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos came to Washington, struggled against discrimination, labored to earn their living, and created distinctive cultures and identities. These documents chronicle, in a small way, how some Asian immigrants became Asian Americans.

Assignment #2 "Resources"
At a forum in February at UCLA, Steve Louie said that Asian American students today have much more resources than students of his generation and, therefore, the potential to achieve greater social change. What does he mean? Compared to 25 years ago, what are the resources that students have today and what can they accomplish with these reources? Be specific.
Response A
Many student activists today take for granted resources that were not available twenty five years ago. These resources are not material things such as having better technology or more fcunding but is the fact of profiting from the information laid down by past student activists and also the resource of having a history. Specifically, these are the more crucial means in achieving greater social change because knowledge is power so not only are we capable of achieving greater social change due to higher understanding, we are also more capable of achieving greater mobilization in the API community through our collective experience. Therefore, through these two theoretical resources, our understanding of our history gives us our much needed knowledge and the utilization of the information/resources that others' have laid down for us gives us the means in achieving this change.
