http://www.nmaetc.org/cultural/AsianAmerican.asp
The Asian American and Pacific Islander (API) community is the fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S. with a population of about 10 million (13% of the non-white U.S. population). It is also one of the most diverse, with 28 Asian and 19 Pacific Islander groups that speak over 100 languages and dialects. The API group includes immigrants and refugees (about 75% of the population), Asian Americans who have been in the U.S. for many generations and Native Hawaiians and American Samoans (indigenous peoples). The largest subgroups of APIs in the U.S. are Chinese, Filipino and Japanese, and the largest subgroups of Pacific Islanders are Hawaiian, Guamanian and Samoan. California, New York, and Hawaii contain 57% of the U.S. API population. Because the API communities are increasing in size so rapidly and are so diverse, their health status and behavioral risks are not well known. In many cases access to dependable health care is limited due to cultural and language differences. APIs have higher rates than the general U.S. population of tuberculosis and hepatitis. Tuberculosis is13 times more common and hepatitis is 25 to 75 times more common in certain API subgroups than in the general U.S. population. API women, in general, have the longest life expectancy (85.8 years) of any ethnic group in the U.S., but subgroups vary widely: Chinese women (86.1 years), Filipino (81.5 years), Native Hawaiian (77.2 years) and Samoan (74.9 years). APIs account for 5,922 cumulative reported cases of AIDS in the U.S. as of June 2001 and represent about 1% of AIDS cases in the U.S. The numbers differ by API subgroup. In California from 1980 to 1995, for example, Filipinos accounted for the highest number (34%), followed by U. S. born APIs (19%), Chinese (12%), Filipinos (11%), Asian Indians (9%), Japanese (6%) and Hawaiians (4%). AIDS cases in APIs also vary by region in the US, with 38% occurring in New York City and San Francisco. Worldwide, 20% of current HIV infections come from Asia.

March 29, 2001 Dear Colleagues in Ministry, Greetings to you in the name of Jesus Christ! I write this note to invite you to the Moderator's Convocation for Asian American Presbyterians which is to be held in Houston, Texas on May 24-27, 2001. This convocation came about in response to a special need for a gathering of Asian American Presbyterians that I became aware of in the course of fulfilling my responsibilities as the first Asian American to be elected the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) last June. Asian American Presbyterians have made significant contributions to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) through our faith practices and cultural heritage. Today, Asian Americans are in need of new leadership. I hope this convocation will serve as an opportunity to reaffirm our faith traditions, renew and expand our leadership, and imagine our new future together as Asian American Presbyterians standing at the crossroads of the 21st century! I ask each of you to consider this invitation seriously. I hope that as sessions you will do all you can to help with the participation of clergy as well as lay and young members of its congregation. I hope that as individuals you will answer this call to participate. Those gathered at the convocation will have many opportunities to network across generations, teach and learn from each other, and worship together! The convocation will also provide an occasion for the annual meeting of the National Asian Presbyterian Council (NAPC).

The health of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) is integral to the well-being of the Nation. The AAPI population is one of the fastest growing minority groups in the United States and was expected to number 12.1 million by the year 2000. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for this group. For example, Asian American males have higher mortality rates due to stroke than white males. Among Asian Indians in the United States, the prevalence of coronary artery disease is 4-fold higher than whites. In the state of Hawaii, Native Hawaiians have the highest death rates due to heart disease and the second highest rate of obesity in America. Without prevention and intervention strategies, the burden of disease will persist for AAPIs. To read the rest of this article and see the strategies for prevention and intervention that are proposed by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, please click here:
