Asian Americans represent the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. Embracing the diverse national backgrounds and unique cultural heritage of Asian Americans presents exciting opportunities for American Protestantism. The positive contributions of Asian American Christians are being felt in local churches, seminaries, presbyteries, and other church bodies nationwide. There is a growing need to understand the complex dynamics of Asian American churches, to recruit gifted Asian American students to careers in ministry, and to provide continuing education opportunities to support Asian American pastors, educators, and laity in their work for Christ. The Asian American Ministry and Missions Center at Union-PSCE has been established to assist in the education of Asian American church leaders. Recruitment
Encouraging gifted Asian Americans to consider careers in pastoral ministry and Christian education, and nurturing them during their schooling, is an important goal of the Center. It is imperative that Asian American churches attract and train leaders who are equipped to minister to second- and third-generation Asian Americans. At Union-PSCE, these students may enroll in a variety of degree programs to train leaders for the church. These include:

Course Description Concurrently, this course also takes a critical look at what it means to be an "Asian American." Are there some essential, identifying factors that makes one "Asian?" How have we come to conceptualize the "Other," the "Oriental" in the development of western colonialism? What role does schooling have in perpetuating "otherness" within the model minority stereotype (especially since Asian American educational experiences have been idealized and popularized in the US as a successful progression toward the American dream of hard work, merit, reward for effort, and a culture predisposed to learning)? Does the history of Asian Americans in the U.S. have any relevance in the lives of students today? It is hoped that by the end of the semester, you come away with more critical, reflective questions than answers or solutions to the questions posed. The intensive, multi-stage, writing requirement is designed to assist in your critical reflection, analysis and synthesis of the readings and class discussions. The sequential writing process is meant for you to critically engage with the issues at hand, to begin to develop a level of mastery in understanding the complex subject area in Asian American education.

You are here: Home Teaching and Learning Strategies Multicultural Education
A Closer Look at Asian Americans and Education by C. N. Le As has traditionally been the case, receiving an education is of paramount importance for the Asian American community. Like African Americans, Latinos, and American Indians, Asian Americans have had to fight a long battle to have access to desegregated and equal educational opportunities. In this historical context, some of the most important victories were the 1968 and 1969 student strikes at San Francisco State University and U.C. Berkeley that ultimately led to the establishment of the first Ethnic Studies and Asian American Studies programs in the country. Since then, Asian Americans have faced many other issues when it comes to their educational experience. Perhaps the most far-reaching issue that Asian Americans still face is actually the most ironic. In the past, Asian Americans were fighting mechanisms of prejudice, exclusion, and institutional discrimination that prevented them from even attending certain schools and therefore receiving a fair education. But recently, Asian Americans have been and continue to be touted as the one ethnic minority group that has successfully overcome racism and achieved the American dream, primarily through education.

THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC This digest discusses the various negative and positive Asian American stereotypes. It also explores how school practices and individual educatorsconsciously or unconsciouslymay reinforce them. Doing so has important negative social, political, and economic ramifications for Asian Americans. Indeed, while Asian Americans are often characterized as the "model minority" (Lee, 1997, p. 442), many have serious psychological and emotional concerns which are not being addressed.
    GENERAL STEREOTYPES
    MODEL MINORITY STEREOTYPES
    SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CONCERNS
The model minority stereotype that Asian American students are "whiz kids" (Brand, 1987) and immune from behavioral or psychological distresses prevents them from acknowledging academic and emotional problems and seeking help. S. Lee (1996) reports on a Cambodian student named Ming who was failing his classes but refused to seek help for his academic difficulties, believing that admitting his academic failure would cause his family to lose face (be ashamed). He was trying to live within the boundaries of the model minority stereotype, and as a result was perpetuating his academic problems, leaving him feeling isolated and depressed.
