June 24, 2002 Would you like to meet and date more Asian women? Well, pity the poor, lonely Asian-seeking souls out there, because Ms. Tan’s class was canceled, with no future dates planned and no explanation offered.
So what happened? "The course got in there by mistake," said Learning Annex national director Steven Schragis, speaking from the company’s headquarters on East 53rd Street. "We have a number of programmers around the country and they book courses, and there are procedures to check them, but this one slipped by." Mr. Schragis continued: "Essentially what happened is, we have a class that we offer sometimes about meeting Jewish singles. And a person thought, ‘Well, that class is successful—let’s play off that.’ And that’s how it started, evidently." Did people at the Learning Annex think there was something untoward about men afflicted with what is sometimes (tastelessly) called "yellow fever" or "Asian fetish" seeking the cure (i.e., scamming techniques) in one of their classes? "I think you are extremely astute in your analysis of what’s going on here," Mr. Schragis said.

THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Asian-Americans constitute a significant minority in the U.S. and are one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in this country, yet little is known about their particular educational needs, especially at the early childhood and elementary levels. This digest provides information to help teachers gain a better understanding of Asian-American children, particularly those from East and Southeast Asian cultures, and identify culturally appropriate educational practices to use with those children.
ASIAN-AMERICAN CHILDREN: WHO ARE THEY?
The term Asian-American covers a variety of national, cultural, and religious heritages. Indeed, Asian-Americans represent more than 29 distinct subgroups who differ in language, religion, and customs. The four major groups of Asian-Americans are East Asian, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean; Pacific Islander; Southeast Asian, such as Thai and Vietnamese; and South Asian, such as Indian and Pakistani (Pang, 1990). Although there are similarities among the various subgroups, they have different origins, ecological adaptations, and histories.

    To see other reports that originated from this same citation, go to the bibliography It has long been assumed by the educational and scholarly communities that Asian students come from cultures that highly value education. This is the cultural explanation for why Asian-American students tend to perform so strongly in school: they are brought up in a value system that encourages or even demands academic dedication. This cultural explanation in turn depends upon another assumption, one involving the psychological disposition of Asian-American adolescents. According to this assumption, Asian-American adolescents easily internalize the ostensible cultural values that place such an emphasis on educational performance. These values then motivate the young people to excel academically.

    ABSTRACT: The issue of discrimination against Asian
    Americans in higher education is discussed. The focus is on:
    whether certain of the country's most prestigious
    universities discriminate against Asian-American applicants;
    why this occurs; and what university officials, executive branch administrators, and members of Congress can do about it. Suspicions arise because university admissions committees tend to be extremely vague about the impact of race on their acceptance/rejection decisions. Though minority status can add 40 to 50 percentage points to an applicant's chance of admission, such racial preferences generally do not operate in favor of Asian-Americans and are often quite the opposite. Statistical evidence shows these

    This article assesses the effects of culture in response to AIDS educational messages among high-risk heterosexuals in an Asian-American community. The research assesses the impact of AIDS educational messages on students' AIDS-related knowledge, concern, and interpersonal communication. Results indicate that respondents with an Asian cultural orientation are less concerned about AIDS and engage in less AIDS related interpersonal communication than respondents with a North American cultural orientation. Implications of these findings for developing effective AIDS educational programs for Asian-Americans are discussed as well. back to top close window

For some, a quality K-12 education and admission to a top University are taken granted. For others, it may be the only potential path to financial stability. And while politicians continue to emphasize its importance and make hallow campaign promises, the overall quality of education compared to other countries continues to erode, and the disparity between schools in wealthy versus poor neighborhoods continues to widen. Organizational Profile
    CAASE aims to support all efforts to provide multicultural and ethnic studies education in American schools. Since these efforts are frequently short-handed, CAASE deploys the talents and experiences of its members nationwide to augment local organizing and research. The creation of the CAASE website in 1998 is intended to ensure continuity in the collective experience of CAASE's advocacy. CAASE voted in 1993 to establish a high school examination in Asian American Studies. The first examination, in March 1995, invited students at 1,100 of the nation's best high schools to compete for scholarships and other prizes. Through its programs, publications, and advocacy, CAASE promotes the belief that awareness of the relevance and significance of ethnic minorities in American history and culture, formally and universally established by education, is the most secure defense against racism.

    Thirty years ago, AALDEF was founded to serve the legal needs of the Asian American community in the New York metropolitan area. On March 25th, over 800 former clients, volunteers, cooperating attorneys, staff members, board members, and law student interns joined city officials, prominent attorneys, members of the civil rights community, and Asian Americans from all over the nation for a 30th Anniversary Gala honoring AALDEF's three decades of service. PIER SIXTY at Chelsea Piers in New York City was the site of the festivities, which featured Justice in Action Awards for award-winning filmmaker Mira Nair, pathbreaking lawyer and activist Alice Young of Kaye Scholer LLP, and the Open Society Institute, whose pioneering work is helping to build a more open global society. AALDEF, founded in 1974, protects the civil rights of Asian Americans through litigation, advocacy, and community education. Since September 11, 2001, AALDEF has provided free legal consultations and representation to 9-11 detainees, hate crime victims, and others affected by the anti-immigrant backlash. In addition, AALDEF has organized legal clinics, trainings on individual rights, and community meetings across the New York metropolitan area. For information or to find out about other 30th anniversary activities , please email us at or call the AALDEF office at 212-966-5932.
