Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
Each year in May our country celebrates its diversity and focuses on the Asian and Pacific American community and experience. First celebrated in 1979 as Asian/Pacific Heritage Week, since 1990 the month of May has been designated as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The United States has gained a rich cultural heritage from Asian and Pacific Islander immigrants. Asian and Pacific Americans have contributed to all aspects of American popular culture and to advances in science that influence all other American's lives.
According to the U. S. Census Bureau , 7.2 million U. S. residents in 2000 were born in Asia. This number comprises 26% of the nation's total foreign-born population. Still, there are only about 10 million Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States, or 4 percent of the total population. The diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander American population includes members of more than 30 ethnic groups who speak more than 300 languages and dialects. Start your celebration with a selection of books, videos, and audio materials from the library.

AAS Course Descriptions This is a CURRENT course description list. Please check the online time schedule or the Stanford bulletin for more accurate information. Asian American Studies 80: Asian American Arts and the Media
A look into the conception of Asian American arts. How does the artist of Asian descent fit into American arts and media? An exploration of Asian Americans in television, music, film, literature, and other artistic media. Discussion and analysis of music, films, and scripts. Asian American Studies 181: Readings in Other Literatures of Asian America
This course will consider texts situated at the "margin" of Asian American literary studies, namely Vietnamese American, Cambodian American, South Asian and Korean American narratives. Using a historical approach, we will explore how post-colonial theories can inform the readings of these texts, focusing on the themes of agency versus co-optation. We will closely examine the identity formation of the narrators and how they inform the current debates over identity politics occurring among Asian American literary critics. We will also address the issues of canonization and the intersection of gender, race, and ethnicity.

Asian / Asian American Music
Introduction
Note: This site is constantly being updated, especially the calendar of events and log...Latest additions: pictures (sheet music stereotyping, Tarika band) and reviews (most of Joss release)]
Site coverage: contemporary music by Asian Americans (and Asian Canadians)... also contemporary music influenced by Asia.
The reviews on this page were mostly written for a DC-area 'zine called, AAMPLITUDE. It was put out by , a non-profit organization that existed from the early 80's to mid-90's. As a collector of Asian American recordings (lp's, cassettes, cd's) I had the opportunity to play some of this music on my Asian American radio show, "Gold Mountain." For many years, the magazine-like program aired on WPFW 89.3 FM, the DC community station owned by Pacifica. ( And I should add that this site has some coverage of radio about Asian Americans, things heard over the air, and other encounters with radio. Meanwhile, I, eventually, hope to explore the notions of Asian American music what it might be, whether there is a viable "Asian American aesthetic", and how it fits into the musical categories one runs into.

Mission Asian American Studies provides critical interdisciplinary perspectives on the various histories of contact, migration, and settlement of Asian groups in the United States. "Asian Americans" compose a diverse collection of diasporic communities, and are becoming increasingly fractured along socioeconomic and geographic lines. In an era of U.S. global hegemony fueled by an increasing military and economic presence in the Pacific Rim, Asian American Studies plays a crucial role in analyzing and shaping economic, political, cultural, and international relations between Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the United States.
