Program Description
The Con Edison Multicultural Arts Internship Program is designed to introduce undergraduate students from culturally diverse backgrounds to career and volunteer leadership opportunities with New York City nonprofit arts organizations. Participants are granted a full-time, ten-week internship and awarded a stipend. Interns gain insight into the field by assuming responsibility for a project under the guidance of experienced arts managers, and by involvement in a wide range of other activities. The Program is open to undergraduate students who have a demonstrated strong interest in arts management as a career option, particularly those underrepresented in this field such as individuals of African-American, Latino, Asian, or Native American descent. To be eligible, applicants must have completed their sophomore or junior year of undergraduate study as of June of the placement year. The Program has also established a mentoring component. Selected employees from the Con Edison management departments volunteer their time and experience to an Intern throughout the duration of the program. We hope to connect, professionally as well as personally, the Student Intern, with their Mentor and the Host Organization.

The year 2000 marked the 30th anniversary of Visual Communications, the 24th anniversary of Asian Cine Vision, and the 20th anniversary of NAATA, the National Asian American Telecommunications Association. Since the humble beginnings of the Asian American media arts movement in the 1970s, there has always been a spirit of adventure, a dedication to telling the untold stories, and a commitment to a larger social vision. The Asian American media arts field is certainly different today with a multitude of talented producers and new communities to serve. At the same time, the challenges we encountered yesteryear are still facing us today - a lack of funding to create work and limited resources for distribution on television and in theaters.

URL: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/1995/10/12/DD53591.DTL From the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 to Executive Order 9066, which ordained internment of Japanese Americans, to Proposition 187, Asian immigration to the United States has had a fraught history. The social record of Asian immigrants has come in for careful study in recent years, but their cultural history has been overlooked. To stir interest in the neglected background of Asian American artistry is one purpose of "With New Eyes: Toward an Asian American Art History in the West'' at San Francisco State University. Incredibly, this is the first exhibition to survey the material record of early Asian American arts. Although the show contains about 100 objects, its curators acknowledge that it is only a small beginning.

with Oliver de la Paz (August 4-8, 2003)! The Asian American Writers' Workshop offers youth-arts programming throughout the school year. We also facilitate special summer programs that encourage young people to explore the intersection of creative writing with other art forms. During the summer of 2002, we created the Through Our Eyes Youth Arts Initiative. Through Our Eyes was a free summer program facilitated by Asian American writers and photographers, encouraging young people to explore issues of community and identity through the arts. Teenagers participated in intensive writing and photography workshops in our office, as well as field trips to various New York City communities. During the summer of 2002, the initial session of Through Our Eyes, thirteen high school students wrote poems and took photographs based upon their visions of community. Special workshops were led by photographer Corky Lee, poet Bushra Rehman, and performance poet Regie Cabico. The program culminated in a community-wide performance event featuring a slide-show and reading of original work from all participants. Current Youth-Arts Programs Writing and Resistance

Community Internship Program Keiko Murabayshi, Amy Lam, Tanya Dasgupta, Millie Zhao, Wei-Ee Cheng, Michael Hung, and Melissa Wu gained valuable work experience through AAASP's internship program. MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Community Internship Program at Binghamton University is to help cultivate young leaders with a passion for creativity, success, and self-development. It is intended to supplement education by promoting enrichment of the Asian and Asian American community through a transition into a professional working environment where new skills, capabilities and knowledge can be acquired. The goals are to help students connect to the culture and contributions of the Asian American community, to build ties to the community and support community needs, to provide real-world experience in a particular area of interest in an atmosphere where students can apply learned skills, and to further develop professional as well as interpersonal skills that are difficult to gain in the classroom setting. Through these efforts, the program fosters inspiration and social consciousness. REQUIREMENTS
Students who are interested in being selected to interview for an internship must have a B+ or better in an Asian American History or Asian Americas course, complete an application and meet with the CIP committee. If selected, you will also be required to participate in pre-internship workshops, which are held during the spring semester.
