384 pp 7x10 Yellow Light is an impressive undertaking that deserves recognition as an introduction to contemporary Asian American arts, and more importantly, as an exploration of the diversity of that community.... [It] is a testament to the Asian American creative spirit and another step toward a new understanding of contemporary art."
MultiCultural Review
Amy Ling brings together in one comprehensive volume poets, novelists, dramatists, musicians, songwriters, composers, filmmakers, choreographers, and performance artists who span three generations and represent the broad spectrum of ethnicities that make up Asian America. They share thoughts on their work, their audiences, and their relationship to the Asian American rubric and American life and culture. They provide a rare glimpse of the inspirations and aspirations out of which their energy and ideas grow and place their work, each differently, in the complex fabric of American life. An indispensible anthology of work and an inspiring and provocative cultural record, Yellow Light casts a revealing glow on the contradictions, influences, imagination, and humanity expressed through the vastly varied creative projects of Americans with Asian roots.

imply grateful to have had the chance to pursue her dream in the United States, Japan-born Keiko Ibi ended up in front of a room full of famous movie stars, holding a trophy denied to so many in the audience.
As she accepted her Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject, Ibi reminded us that Asian Americans are now becoming major players in the arts and entertainment industry.
While sometimes we appear on the American radar screen only when we reach a non-Asian American audience, Asian American artists have been writing, singing and dancing since first arriving on these shores.
As David Henry Hwang reminded us in his play Dance and the Railroad, railroad builders and gold miners from the mid-1800s were singing Peking Opera songs and performing remembered dance routines around camp fires in the high Sierras.
For some of us, Asian American arts began in the late 1960s and early 1970s, as we struggled to gain a sense of identity.
When I saw the 1961 movie version of West Side Story the other night, I was reminded that Miyamoto, as Joanne Miya, had appeared in this and several other stage and movie classics, and thus had honed music, dancing, and composing skills that she was able to combine with her commitment to social justice.

Grooving to a Different Beat
Asian Crisis explores Asian American music
By Hua Hsu
For Kim, though, explorations into fusion can succeed only insofar as the traditions of the Asian instruments are preserved. The taiko and changgu are never just drums; they are vital components of Japanese and Korean folk traditions, respectively. For the performance, Jensen-Lacsamana has retrofitted a traditional Filipino kulintang piece to incorporate the instrumentation of his Asian Crisis bandmates. Though members of the Filipino musical community were initially skeptical of his attempt to update centuries-old sounds, his tribute won praise from the most important name of them all. The show is at OACC, 388-9th Street, #290, Oakland, CA. Tickets are $10. Call 510-208-6080 for tickets or more information.
