Join Ginger Hashimoto, on a musical fantasy in a yellow submarine…to a Japantown you've never seen! “It was over 30 years ago today…” begins SUZ Takeda’s stage character, Ginger Hashimoto. Back from Las Vegas, Japantown’s favorite cabaret personality and intrepid time-traveler, will lead you on a musical adventure to San Francisco’s J-Town, circa 1960s and 70s. With redevelopment and the rise of community consciousness as a backdrop, Ginger accompanied by the eclectic Snaps rediscovers how Nihonmachi survived in spite of it all. How the Sansei and Nisei generations pulled together “With a little help from our friends…” to answer the Issei and Nisei asking, “Will you still need me? Will you still feed me? … When I’m 84?” And finally, affirm the universal truth, as only Ginger can, that “all we need is love…”

AE - Directed by Chay Yew Drawn from real life events, involving the strange tale of a French diplomat who carried on a 20-year relationship with a Chinese opera star without (he contended) being aware that his "perfect woman" was really a man. Bored with his routine posting in Beijing, and awkward with women, diplomat Rene Gallimard is easy prey for the subtle, delicate charms of Song Liling, a Chinese opera star who personifies Gallimard's fantasy vision of submissive, exotic oriental sexuality. He begins a 20-year affair with "her," during which time he passes along diplomatic secrets, an act which brings on his downfall and imprisonment. For more information visit www.eastwestplayers.org/butterfly.htm. Cast: Arye Gross, Matthew Henerson, Shannon Holt, Emily Kuroda, Alec Mapa, Jennifer Rau and Erik Sorensen. (Student, Senior and Group discounts available.)
