DECLARATION OF THE APEC EDUCATION MINISTERIAL
"TOWARD EDUCATION STANDARDS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY" 6 August 1992
  • Education Ministers and other senior education officials (hereinafter referred to as "the Ministers") from Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, the Republic of the Philippines, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and the United States of America, met in Washington from 5 to 6 August 1992. The Ministers came together at the invitation of the President of the United States to discuss education standards and related issues of mutual interest.
  • Need for Cooperative Action in Education
  • The Ministers declared that there is a need for APEC participants to continue to work cooperatively to identify strategies for addressing the challenges presented to their education systems by the growing interdependence of economies and peoples in the Asia-Pacific region and the world. These challenges include the need for students to develop the skills required in a technologically sophisticated world and a better understanding of the cultures and economies of the Asia-Pacific region. The Ministers noted that the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum is an appropriate and attractive arena within which to discuss these issues, due to APEC's ability to relate education to the broader economic, social, and cultural environment of the Asia-Pacific region.

In Fall 99, Bridges will lead multidisciplinary teams of university students to Khumbu and Rolwaling, Nepal, where we will spend 13 weeks studying tourism development, conducting World-Bank protocol "Rapid Participatory Appraisals," formulating and implementing community development projects in civil engineering, environmental protection, agro-technology, commercial organization, tourism promotion, and other fields. This program involves quite a bit of trekking; you must be in good physical condition, or psychologically prepared to get into shape very quickly. If you feel that you could contribute to this program, please see our Website for details www.onourown.com

The Thugs, The Curtain Thief, and the Sugar Lord, Power, Politics, and Culture in Colonial Java
    by Onghokham
Nine discursive essays on subjects related to Colonial Java by the now-retired eminent Indonesian historian, Onghokham (b.1933). Spiced with humour and anecdotes, and illustrated with old maps and drawings, the papers shed light on notable personalities including the "Sugar King" Oei Tiong Ham (1866-1924), on incidents including the Brotodingrat Curtain Affair of 1899, on the stratified Dutch-imposed system of governance and on currency problems in the period after the Japanese Occupation. Index and bibliography.
Out in the Midday Sun: The British in Malaya 1880 - 1960
    by Shennan, Margaret
The gripping story of the colonial British presence in Malaya, from its days of promise to the end of the Empire. The author, who was born in Kuching and spent her early years in peninsular Malaya, is a historian. She draws on a wide range of sources, including personal contacts to paint the anomalies and conflicts in a benign but flawed regime. The collage of reminisences and anecdotes enables some understanding of the fortune-seeking, bureaucratic rigidity, semi-altruistic beliefs, and positive and negative personal qualities, which went to make up a non-durable fabric that was irrevocably worn out by 1960.
