Map of Aruba and Caribbean Since 1986, when Aruba separated from the other five islands of the Netherlands Antilles and became a singular entity within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, it has managed its own affairs within the kingdom and does not answer to the central Netherlands Antilles government based in Willemstad, Curacao . Aruba's constitution provides for a governor, appointed by the queen for a sixyear term, to oversee the formation of local government, headed by a prime minister and legislated by a seven-member Council of Ministers. The legislative body is a parliament, comprising 21 members elected from various island districts. Aruba handles its own internal affairs such as customs and immigration, aviation, communication, and other day-to-day matters on the island, while Holland maintains jurisdiction over defense and foreign affairs. Aruba is a prosperous island, deriving much of its income through tourism and through remittances from Holland. Since the closing of the Lago refinery in 1985, which subsequently reopened as the much smaller Coastal Oil refinery in 1991, Aruba has had to rebuild its economy utilizing its most abundant resources-beachfront, clear waters, and sunshine. In other words, the island has banked on tourism as its number one foreign income earner. The process has been successful; over the past 15 years Aruba has seen its tourism numbers increase steadily, and the government now derives nearly 30% of its income from tourism. History: Alonzo de Ojeda discovered Aruba in 1499, claiming the island for Spain. However, the Spaniards did not consider the island worth colonising and left the original Arawak Indian inhabitants to live in virtual peace. The Spaniards’ lack of interest resulted in the island becoming a haven for pirates and buccaneers. Spanish hegemony continued unchallenged, however, until 1634, by which time the war with Holland was well into its seventh decade. Dutch war interests then switched to the Caribbean and the Dutch fleet took over the neglected territory with little opposition. In 1643, the Dutch appointed a governor to take charge of Aruba and the rest of the Netherlands Antilles. Except for a brief period in the early 19th century, when the British took possession, Aruba has remained under peaceful Dutch jurisdiction ever since. On 1 January 1986, Aruba achieved internal autonomy, separating it administratively from the rest of the Netherlands Antilles, although it remains an integral part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This was originally conceived as the first step towards independence, for which a ten-year transitional period was planned. In March 1994, however, after consultation with the Dutch government, this plan was shelved. Independence at some later date has not been completely ruled out but it will now require the consent of two-thirds of the population in a referendum. The reluctance to move towards independence seems to have come from the Arubans themselves, especially the leading political party, the

GEOGRAPHY: Aruba is the smallest island in the Leeward group of the Dutch Caribbean islands, which also include Bonaire and Curaçao. They are popularly known as the ABCs. As the westernmost island of the group, Aruba is the final link in the long Antillean chain, lying 20km (12.5 miles) off the Venezuelan coast. The island is 30km (19.6 miles) long and 9km (6 miles) across at its widest and has a flat landscape dominated by Jamanota Mountain (188m/617ft). The west and southwest coast, known as Palm Beach, boasts 11km (7 miles) of palm-fringed powder-white sands, while in complete contrast the east coast has a desolate, windswept shoreline of jagged rocks carved into weird shapes by the pounding surf.

Gracious smiles. Sheer-joy of living smiles. Aruba, as any traveler here will tell you, must surely be among the most welcoming places on earth. Maybe it's the Dutch tradition of hospitality, maybe it's the long and prosperous history of the island, maybe it's the year-round warmth of the sunshine and the fresh breezes of the trade winds. Whatever it is, it's absolutely true: Aruba is a genuinely happy place to be. And the people who live here, in the cities, in the towns, in the countryside, are genuinely happy to be sharing it with you. You see, not only is this an island where happiness lives in Aruba, there's so much happiness to spare, we want to be sure you take some of it back home with you. Culture The population of Aruba is of mixed descent and can trace its ancestry back to over 40 different ethnic backgrounds. Nearly everyone on the island is able to speak English, Spanish and Dutch, which is the official language. You'll also hear the local Papiamento, a lilting, melodic language which has evolved over the centuries from an eclectic mixture of Spanish, Dutch and Portugese with a sprinkling of Indian, English and French. Dutch Influence Until the end of 1985, Aruba was a member of the Antilles Netherlands, made up of the six Dutch Caribbean islands. On January 1, 1986, however, Aruba became a separate entity within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

ARIKOK NATIONAL PARK, ARUBA, GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION List of Stories Arikok National Park encompasses about 18% of the island of Aruba, and was designated by the government in the early eighties as an environmental sanctuary. The Park boasts a variety of flora and fauna, including five species that only can be found on this island and no other, and other natural resources that remain valuable to the people of Aruba. The Park is also home to the highest points in Aruba, while the land encompasses the three primary geological shapes that make up the formation of the island. These unique shapings have contributed to the survival and support of the indigenous plant and wildlife on the island of Aruba, and has influenced the pattern of human settlement. Aruba has seen many phases of Native American habitation, and Arikok National Park is home to many significant sites of Native American settlement and art. Seeing the Park as an important role in the island's sustainable development, the government of Aruba has devised an action plan in order to keep the resources of the Park at full capacity. Their master plan includes the following objectives; to maintain a unique part of Aruba's cultural and natural landscape, to keep, stabilize and restore vital populations of native flora and fauna, to preserve specific native and rare species, to develop environmental education opportunities, and to develop recreational and tourism amenities in the Park.
