Aruba Links Country Map Accommodation Destination : ARUBA Aruba attracts some one million visitors and cruise passengers per year, most from North America and nearby Venezuela, and it ranks as one of the Caribbean's most popular vacation spots The oblong island is fronted by heavy surf and a jagged coast on the northern, windward side and by seven miles (11 km) of honey-colored sand beaches on the southern leeward coast. It's some 75 squares miles (193 km2) in area and measures about five miles (8 km) at it widest point and 19 miles (30 km) in lenght. Aruba is an easy island to get around, the road systems are in good shape and well-marked. Archaeologists have discovered that there were two waves of Amerindian migration to Aruba. The first came from present day Venezuela about 4,000 years ago. They were semi-nomadic, living in family groups of 10-15 people and lived on what they could gather from the sea: fish, conch, turtle eggs and turtle meat. A second group, the Caquetios, arrived much later, around 1000 AD, and were different physically, linguistically and culturally. Aruba is one of the very few Caribbean islands on which the Indian population was not exterminated although there are no full-blooded Indians now. The Aruban today is a descendant of the Caquetio Indians, with a mixture of Spanish and Dutch blood from the early colonizers.

Barbados by Jodi Rintelman - Personnel Director Photo and art courtesy of the Communication department B arbados is the easternmost of the Caribbean islands. It is a beautiful, majestic land, as well as the site of 1997's Summer Abroad in the Caribbean program. Headed by Tulane's Dr. John H. Patton, the program encourages all students, regardless of their current course of study, to immerse themselves in the beauty of a culture that bears but vague similarities to our own. The program has been in effect since 1988 and has since enlightened many students hoping to find out a little bit more about the world and what it means to be an American by removing the shield of a familiar American culture. This program is titled "Communication and Culture" and has been alternately held in Aruba and Barbados. It is conducted in conjunction with the University of the West Indies in Barbados, and Tulane students are housed on their campus. In 1995, Pamela Broom made her first trip abroad as one such student. She made her decision while studying humanities as a full-time University College senior with three little girls. She saw the flier and, after a brief vacillation, inquired into the logistics of studying a unique culture in the West Indies. The culture she found was one shaped in part by the political history of the area. Barbados was formerly a British colony and is now a member of the British Commonwealth. It has since adopted a few of the amenities of Western society, such as grocery facilities, but continues to draw cultural richness from the deep African traditions and heritage celebrated by the majority of the inhabitants.

Aruba’s culture is a collection of values, beliefs, and traditions from several nations over hundreds of years. The language, architecture, schooling, language, festivities, and folklore have made the Aruban natives the people they are today. The native population has ethnic roots in Arawak, African, and European peoples. This is evident in the local foods, architecture, celebrations, and languages. There is also a mix of expatriates from Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America working in various industries on the island. Culturally, Aruba has strong ties to Holland; it’s colonial occupier and present-day partner in the Netherlands kingdom. The official language of the island is Dutch, seen on street signs, government documents, and several local newspapers. Most people of Aruba, particularly those in the tourism business, speak English . The education system of Aruba has established the same standards to those employed in the Netherlands. Teachers communicate with their students primarily in Dutch. English is required of students by the fourth grade and many become fluent in their early adult years. Spanish, French, and German are three other languages offered to students while attending school. On the island, school facilities include a secondary education, a teacher’s college, a law school, and technical and training establishments. Aruba offers scholarships to students who excel in specific areas giving them an opportunity to further their studies in Holland.
