Aruba is a member of the Dutch Windward Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao), popularly known as the ABC Islands, and, like its sister islands, is distinguished by a unique and dramatic landscape. The interior of Aruba has scant vegetation and is an arid desert landscape spotted with scruffy foliage, cacti, wind-bent divi-divi trees, and tiny red flowers called fioritas in the local creole of Papiamento (derived from Dutch, Spanish, and African languages). Huge boulders, caves, and a dusty terrain add to the dramatic nature of the interior. This sunny island is cooled by refreshing trade winds that sweep the coasts. It is Aruba's coast, after all, that draws visitors year after year. Of the three ABC Islands, Aruba boasts the best beaches by far, all of which are open to the public free of charge. Long, sandy beaches line all sides of the island, and play host to Aruba's most popular watersport: windsurfing. North of Aruba's capital of Oranjestad lies the main resort area on the island. Druif Beach begins near the Tamarijn Aruba Beach Resort, widening along the coast as it nears the Divi Aruba Resort. Here is found some of the best windsurfing on the western side of the island, and most of these resorts also offer windsurfing rentals and lessons. At the northernmost tip of Aruba is an area of very shallow waters with no hotels to break the wind, and this is the best spot for fast windsurfing. Windsurfers from all over the world come here for sport and competition, and professionals often come to northern Aruba for photo sessions. Although windsurfing speeds are high here and there is an extremely strong offshore wind, the sport can be undertaken quite safely, as there are several rescue boats on hand should the wind carry you off to Panama!
